The war grinds on. After a century the tally stands at 30 million dead worldwide, with no end in sight to the slaughter. There's a disabling injury every 14 seconds; 100 lives a day are lost. Industry cranks out the machines of death, manned by citizen-soldiers on the field of battle. No, I'm not reciting a history lesson about Europe in 1453. This is here and now, in the US and abroad. The battlefields are the highways; the instruments of war the automobiles manned by sometimes crazy, sometimes distracted, or sometimes just confused ordinary people. They range in age from 16 to far-too-old, their driving skills might be comparable to a NASCAR professional or perhaps are just being learned. Overconfidence abounds, yet at 100 feet per second, with cars nanometers from each others' bumpers, even a glance in the mirror may spell death. We accept the carnage because well, I really don't know why. In real wars ordinary citizens are often unwillingly drafted or co-opted into the battle by the power of the state. But on the roads it's different. We " each of us individually - make decisions to drive too aggressively, change lanes suddenly, run that red light or zip along the right shoulder at 30 MPH when the highway is gridlocked. Various technology solutions have been presented, such as

This war is of considerable interest both because of its duration and the number of theatres in which it was fought. In this book, Hundred Years’ War expert Dr Anne Curry reveals how the war can reveal much about the changing nature of warfare: the rise of infantry and the demise of the knight; the impact of increased use of gunpowder and the effect of the wars on generations of people around it. (Joan of Arc's Letter to the Duke of Bedford from 1429. Selections.)
King of England, and you, Duke of Bedford, who call yourself Regent of the realm of France; you William de la Pole, earl of Suffolk, John, Lord Talbot, and you Thomas, Lord Scales, who call yourselves lieutenants of the said Duke of Bedford: Do right to the King of heaven; deliver to the Maid [Joan], who is sent here by God, the King of heaven, the keys of all the good towns which you have taken and destroyed in France. She is come hither from God to restore the royal blood. She is ready to make peace if you are willing to do right to her, and on condition that you will quit France and pay back that which you have taken there. And you, archers, comrades of war, gentlemen and others who are before the city of Orleans, go away to your own country, in God's name; and if you do not thus, await tidings of the Maid, who will, ere long, come to see you to your very great hurt.
King of England, if you do not thus, I am the chief of the war, and in whatever place I shall find your men in France, I shall drive them out, whether they will or no; and if they will not obey, I will have them all slain.

...and they [Yankees] are marked ... with such a perversity of character, as to constitute, from that circumstance, the natural division of our parties Thomas Jefferson Some say simplistically that the Civil War was fought over slavery. Unfortunately, there is no "simple" reason. The causes of the war were a complex series of events, including slavery, that began long before the first shot was fired. Competing nationalisms, political turmoil, the definition of freedom, the preservation of the Union, the fate of slavery and the structure of our society and economy could all be listed as significant contributing factors in America's bloodiest conflict. Complaints of Georgians Many of the problems Georgians saw more than one hundred fifty years ago are being reiterated today. The "oppressive" federal government. High taxes(tariffs before the war). A growing government unwilling to listen to law abiding citizens. Sound familiar? They were complaints levied from 1816 on in Georgia. Constitutional Questions People argued about the meaning of the Constitution since its infancy. From a legal standpoint, the document defines the relationship between the people of the United States and the federal government, detailing the powers and responsibilities of each. On Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude [The following is the full text of a lecture delivered, in part, in Liberal Studies 402, on Tuesday, March 28, 1995, by Ian Johnston. This text is in the public domain, released May, 1999; the text was edited slightly on April 11, 2000] For comments or questions, please contact Ian Johnston Introduction In this lecture I would like to start with an initial question and then suggest some possible directions one might like to explore in answering it. We can all agree, I think, that this novel is amazingly rich, so I don't propose anything like a last word. However, by examining some patterns in the novel, we can perhaps help to shape some potentially illuminating observations. So I propose to deal with the novel in the following stages: First, I want to consider One Hundred Years of Solitude as an epic, in the traditional sense of the word, and from that consideration to frame an interpretative question. Second, I propose to look at the complex effects this novel creates: a wonderfully comic sense combined with an overall tragic irony underlying the remarkably energetic and entertaining inventiveness in the plot and the characters. Thirdly, by way of accounting, at least in part, for these complex effects, I wish to look at two particular aspects: the double sense of time in the novel and the style of magical realism.

A war which stretched for over a hundred years seems almost inconceivable to us today. Indeed, in that sense, the term A Hundred Years War is a serious misnomer, since the conflict between England and France over the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries took place in fits and starts and was seldom sustained for anything more than a few years at a time. It was far from the A total war - that is, all-out conflicts involving the large-scale mobilization of the resources of nations - that we normally think of today. But, although the intensity of conflict may seem low by our standards, it was nonetheless a confrontation of huge significance not only for the emerging nations of

This ends the two and a half year struggle amongst the Cardinals to find a pope. 5 September John XXII leaves Lyon for Avignon, where he makes his residence. February An assemblage of nobles gathers in Paris to ratify the coronation of Philippe V, stating that "A woman cannot succeed to the throne and kingdom of France" 13 March Given the rival emperors (Louis of Bavaria and Frederick of Austria) in the Holy Roman Empire, pope John XXII states that all imperial jurisdiction resides with the papacy. July Pope John XXII, pursuing the policy that the papacy holds all imperial jurisdiction in the absence of a clear emperor, appoints king Robert of Sicily as imperial vicar for Italy. 23 January After a lengthy investigation pope John XXII declares many of the doctrines of the 'Spiritual' Franciscans to be in error. Those who refused to accept this judgment were treated as heretics, and many were burned, though some escaped to Sicily. John XXII, in an attempt to increase the finances of the papacy, declares that all the minor benefices falling vacant for the next three years were reserved for the pope to dispose of, thus ensuring himself the

In 1348 the black plague claimed the lives of one third of the population and in 1350 the mere mention of the name of the Black Prince, which now sounds like a make of chocolate, made knees shake. The elder son of Edouard III, the prince of Walles was called the Black Prince because of the colour of his armour. He then traversed the south west of France. During this miserable time, due to the treaty of Bretigny in 1360, Rouergue became British. For three years the King of France was an English prisoner and was asked for an enormous ransom and ceded one quarter of his kingdom of France.
The situation was the same in Larzac and around Camares with the Aragonais mercenaries of Henri de Trastamare. These soldiers, who received no pay, initially attacked remote farmers who lived away from the security of cities. Meeting little or no resistance these large companies of soldiers established themselves in the area for half a century. top of page
