Controversial Issues
Concerning the Hundred Years' War
This page identifies various issues related to the history of the Hundred Years' War [HYW] that need to be examined with caution. Many of these topics concern observations and perceptions that receive unquestioned acceptance in history works largely due to repetition and very selective referencing to sources in numerous secondary accounts of the war.
Some issue topics addressed in this series may not specifically relate to the HYW, but indirectly apply as they pertain to understanding the era and/or fundamental practice of presenting history.
An index of topics is provided immediately below in the Directory. The Directory contains a brief summary of each topic addressed in this webpage. Following each summary description are, or will be, links to separate webpages that contain expanded arguments that attempt to present a balanced review of the evidence. In most cases, there cannot be solid proof to support one thesis, or position, over another. However, several unfounded assertions can be exposed, or cautionary flags raised. This page is under continious development and expansion
At this stage, many topic headings only identify specific issues that will be addressed with expanded narrative at a later date.

Fighting Talk!
In the 12th century a lady called Eleanor of Aquitaine married Henry Plantagenet, future Henry II, King of England. Her dowry was … the whole of South West France. Not everybody was happy about suddenly becoming English, and for the next 200 years the French and English went at it periodically across the border of the Dordogne river. One of the more famous protagonists was Henry's son, Richard I, Coeur de Lion, or ' The Lion-Hearted The end of The Hundred Years War The French Revolution must have seemed like a well-earned break. This continual conflict has left an amazing architectural heritage, with dozens of castles, walled towns, fortified churches and farmhouses. But, it also impoverished the area for centuries, and this general depopulation is still evident today. It is only in the last 30 years that tourism has brought some regeneration to The Dordogne If you visit in December, the the whole region is deserted, and I find it amazing to see how long-term the effects of so much conflict can be.

War of the Hundred Years
"A series of overlapping wars among constantly shifting alliances, precipitated by the death of Artur Hawkwing and the resulting struggle for his empire. It lasted from FY 994 to FY 1117. The war depopulated large parts of the lands between the Aryth Ocean and the Aiel Waste , from the Sea of Storms to the Great Blight . So great was the destruction that only fragmentary records of the time remain. The empire of Artur Hawkwing was pulled apart, and the nations of the present day were formed." ( TEotW ,Glossary)

Summary
This page collects on-line information about the Hundred Years War. It is inspired by the HYW on-line game and might be useful for players of that game or people with a general interest in the medieval ages.
Tools and Toys
I have produced a few programs that help me organising my households in the HYW games I'm in. Maybe some of the are useful for other players, too. So, here they are. The automatic map generator produces maps (in PostScript and JPEG format) of the game area. You can upload data files and automatically produce such maps. Example maps , using the initialisation data for HYW are available, too. Check maps of closed games to see the map generator in action. I've set up a message board to discuss HYW related issues. I still have to sort out it's structure but you can start posting in the main forum already if you wish. ( OFF LINE I am hosting several genealogy databases ( GEDCOM 5.5 format The HYW Wiki (still very experimental!)

Norsk Hydro was founded on 2 December 1905. But the story really started a few years earlier, right at the turn of the century. Travelling back in time brings us to the essential task Hydro has taken upon itself, the source of the values Hydro has embraced and the origins of the culture that makes Hydro what it is today. It has been said that our company culture is rooted in its history. So here we present the story of Hydro.
Norsk Hydro is founded and provides the solution to one of the most pressing problems of the day - industrial manufacture of plant nutrients to increase food production throughout the world. Norwegian hydroelectric power, scientific and technological breakthroughs, Swedish, French and German capital, and an entrepreneurial spirit join forces to lead the way for the growth and modernization that developed in Norway after 1905. An international industrial company is born.

The first world war, revolution in Russia and recession. Hydro experiences difficult years with tough markets and sharp competition. The company investigates ways to develop its fertilizer technology and faces a difficult decision. The board votes for closer cooperation with IG Farben on the use of the more effective German Haber-Bosch technology for the production of ammonia.

A period of stock market crashes, persistently weak markets and preparations for war, followed by the horrors and destruction of the second world war. Hydro is troubled by serious labour conflicts and then has to reconcile itself to the German occupation of Norway from 1940. Plants are subject to bombing by the allied forces and sabotage actions.

Mostly they follow the Hundred Years War with France, from Henry V to Joan of Arc , and the Wars of the Roses , between York and Lancaster . Resounding with powerful characters and conflict, these plays are a significant influence on modern fantasy, most notably George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire . I wrote these summaries to benefit and encourage anyone interested in Shakespeare's History Plays . Any questions or comments?
