How Many Hummingbirds?
HUMMINGBIRD CELEBRATION 2004 HC Activities Hummingbird Banding Results KRV Hummer Finding Guide ... VISITORS The question is often asked, "How many hummingbirds do I have coming to my feeders?" The following information, including reader comments, is intended to give you a "feel" for the numbers of hummingbirds coming to your feeders. You may find there are often many more hummingbirds present at your feeders than might be thought. Some caveats to keep in mind are: *Not all hummingbirds are Black-chinned Hummingbirds.* *Not all hummingbird individuals or species are the same size which may impact sugar solution intake.* *Not all hummingbird species or individuals are known to drink the same amount of sugar solution*. *The length of the feeding day differs depending upon latitude and longitude.* *Feeding rates and consumption may vary depending upon temperature and other weather related factors.* *Migrating hummingbirds may require more food than non-migrating hummingbirds.* Ruth Russell, Tucson Audubon Society, passes this information on from her husband Steve who has conducted hummingbird research in Southeast Arizona for years.

Attracting Hummingbirds to your Backyard Wildlife Habitat
From the National Wildlife Federation Tiny, iridescent hummingbirds can be an exciting addition to your backyard wildlife habitat. If hummingbirds live in your area, you can attract them by planting red, tubular flowers. There are many red-flowered plants to choose from. Over 160 native, North American plants depend exclusively on hummingbirds for pollination. Many of the red-flowered annuals, perennials, vines, and shrubs available from mail order sources or local garden centers have been developed from the native red-flowered plants of the western hemisphere. Here is a list of some of the plants that most successfully attract hummingbirds:
  • Trumpet honeysuckle Trumpet-creeper Cardinal-flower Scarlet penstemon Scarlet morning-glory Cypress vine Scarlet paintbrush Scarlet salvia Bee-balm Fire pink Scarlet petunia Red buckeye Geiger tree Scarletbush Coral bells
As a supplementary source of food, hummingbird feeders can be hung in your Backyard Wildlife Habitat. Many types of feeders are available and all should be filled with a boiled solution of four parts water to one part white refined sugar or a commercial "nectar" mix. Do not use honey solutions in feeders as they may produce a fungal disease fatal to hummingbirds. Sugar water feeders should be cleaned every three to five days using a brush and a mild detergent solution. Rinse well. HUMMINGBIRD FACTS:
  • The smallest bird in the world, the Cuban bee hummingbird, is 2 1/4 inches long - about the size of a bumble bee.

Costa's Hummingbird Nests In Ridgecrest, Calif.
The Lady of the Lamp
For TWELVE consecutive years, a Costa's Hummingbird ( Calypte costae ) had nested in the bottom of a lamp in my patio. However, in 2005 I moved to a new residence but I did take the lamps with me. I hope to start a new nest streak once I get settled.
The picture on the left is of the first nest for 1997. The picture on the right is one the lamps which is 10 feet from the ground. Ridgecrest is a community in the Mojave Desert and my home is located at N35 35' 41" W117 39' 24" (NAD 27) at an elevation of 2320 feet. Temperatures vary from below freezing in the winter to well over 100 degrees in the summer. Costa's Hummingbirds are year around residents.
Below is the nesting data from years 1994-2004. Data from 1993 is not available as it was the first nest and I did not want to disturb the nesting activity. In 1995, this hummingbird successfully produced FOUR broods with the first egg laid on February 7th and the last hatchling fledging on July 23th. Post nest feeding continued into August. Over six months of continuous maternal activity. She was observed to be post nest feeding one brood while sitting on the eggs of the next brood. Whew !!!
Pictured on the left are the 1997-2 eggs. On May 3, one chick fledged the nest leaving its sibling behind (pictured right). The second chick fledged the nest in the morning of May 4.

Full size image available through contact The world's oldest known modern hummingbird fossils have been discovered in Germany. The tiny skeletons are also the first modern-type hummingbird fossils ever found in the Old World. These creatures, with strikingly similar resemblances to today's hummingbirds, lived in present-day Germany more than 30 million year ago. Although hummingbirds are currently restricted to the Americas, their long-extinct Old World "look-alikes" may have helped determine the shape of some Asian and African flowers alive today. These findings appear in the 07 May, 2004 issue of the journal Science , published by AAAS, the non-profit science society.

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in Missouri
Overview
The ruby-throated hummingbird is one of the most fascinating birds in Missouri. The widespread appeal of these tiny birds lies in their shimmering, iridescent plumage, their darting, hovering flight and their bold, pugnacious behavior. To early European settlers in the New World, hummingbirds were especially noteworthy because they occur only in the Western Hemisphere. The majority of the 320 species of hummingbirds live in the Central and South American tropics. About two dozen species range into the western United States. Primarily only one, the ruby-throated hummingbird, lives east of the Rockies. It is the only hummingbird to nest in Missouri.
Description
The ruby-throated hummingbird ( Archilochus colubris ) is by far Missouri's smallest bird. By comparison, the kinglet, the state's next smallest bird, weighs twice as much. The name "ruby-throated" is derived from the adult male's crimson throat feathers, or gorget, which he uses to attract females and for territorial defense. Females and immature males have white throats with gray flecks. All ruby-throated hummingbirds have emerald-green backs, wings and tails and are white below. The iridescence of the plumage causes the birds to appear different shades of color depending on the angle of light. There are certain large moths that may, at first glance, be confused with hummingbirds.
