Facts about Hummingbirds

  • Hummingbirds are native to South America. When early Spanish explorers encountered hummingbirds they called them Joyas voladoras, flying jewels.
  • In the eighteenth century, when Swedish naturalist Carolus Linnaeus devised the scientific classification system still in use today (kingdom, phylum, class, order and family) hummingbirds were assigned their own family: Trochilidae, from the Greek trochilos, meaning small bird.
  • Only ten species of hummers have significant ranges north of Mexico. Only the ruby-throated hummingbird ranges east of the Mississippi.
  • Hummingbird nests average about 1-1/2 inches in outside diameter. A penny will almost fill the inside diameter.
  • Hummingbird eggs are so small that a penny would completely cover three of them. The usual brood, however, is two eggs.
  • It takes hummingbird eggs two to 2 1/2 weeks to hatch.
  • Hatchlings remain in the nest for about three weeks.
  • Most hummers produce one brood per season.
  • Hummers typically live five years.
  • Hummers usually feed every ten minutes throughout the day.

Linking Birders Worldwide Join Winter Hummingbirds! If you said that phrase a few years ago, most folks would think you're crazy, and those living east of the Mississippi River would only think "sick Ruby-throated." But hummingbirds aren't the feeble waifs people once thought, and at least small numbers of several western hummingbird species show up in the eastern US in winter. The most common are Rufous Hummingbirds, with over a thousand now reported annually. Most are seen at feeders after Ruby-throateds have departed. They can, and have, occurred in EVERY eastern state, often annually.
If you want to increase the odds of seeing a winter hummingbird, keep fresh nectar (3 or 4:1, water:white table sugar) in at least one feeder all winter. It also helps if your garden is chock full of hummingbird flowers (at least until frost!) and your yard has lots of "cover," such as evergreens, brambles, and thickets.
Don't worry. Leaving feeders out will NOT prevent hummingbirds from migrating. Conversely, removing feeders will NOT convince birds

You can attract hummingbirds to your garden. On migration,Rubythroated hummingbirds fly 500 miles non-stop across the Gulf of Mexico, and when they get to
http://www.birdwatching.com/stories/humfeeder.html
Attracting Hummingbirds
Hummingbirds are drawn to red, pink, and orange flowers. Some good hummingbird flowers are impatiens, salvia, lilies, trumpet vine, and monarda (bee balm). Although trumpet-shaped flowers are famous for attracting hummingbirds, I have found the diminutive blossoms of coral bells receive more hummer attention than any flower in the garden except columbines. It's best to plant several kinds of flowers, so that something will be in bloom for hummingbirds all the time, whether they are migrating north in spring, spending the summer (if you're lucky), or heading south in the fall. Hummingbirds prefer flowers planted in big same-species clumps, rather than scattered around. And of course you will want to avoid chemicals and sprays. Hummingbird feeders impose a responsibility on the provider. To be safe, they must be clean, and that is a challenge in hot weather. The solution should be changed at least every other day, even if no hummingbirds are using it, so that it doesn't ferment or get moldy. Once a week the feeder must be washed with vinegar and water or a 10% chlorine solution and scrubbed with a baby-bottle brush. (Most experts advise against using soap or detergent.) If all this is too much trouble, just plant the flowers and skip the artificial feeders. You'll still attract hummingbirds, and you won't be harming them with unsanitary feeders.

51. Jewel Birds - Ruby-throated Hummingbirds
Rubythroated hummingbirds are jewel birds. Be ready when they visit your garden.
http://www.birdwatching.com/stories/rthustory.html
Jewel Birds
This morning a friend phoned to tell me she'd just seen her first hummingbird of the year. A male Ruby-throat stopped by the feeder she'd just put up by a hanging basket of fuchsias and had a good sweet drink. It's a marvelous day, when the hummingbirds arrive in the Midwest. Ever since they arrived on the Gulf coast, in early March, they've been probing their way north flower by flower, as spring opened ahead of them. Here in Iowa, as in much of the Midwest, many hummingbirds pass right on through. But if you're ready, you can attract hummingbirds to your garden and hold their loyalty for a while. Hummingbirds are not afraid of people. It's easy to get one to land on your hand Bright blossoms and sweet water are magnets for hummingbirds. The tiny birds' need for nourishment is intense, for they have the highest metabolic rate of any bird, and they consume nearly their weight in nectar every day. On their long journey north, they are always looking for food. It's said that every square foot of land in North America is investigated by hummingbirds in the course of a year. If you provide the right flowers, hummingbirds will be the inevitable result. Special feeders that hold sugar water will also do the trick, though they require more care.

Why Do Our Hummingbirds Hum?
So many of our readers have hummingbirds visiting their gardeneven feeders to attract themthat California's hummingbirds hardly need a lengthy introduction. These are among the smallest of living birds, and were inhabitants here long before the original prehistoric humans immigrated here from Asia via the Bering Land Bridge. Indeed, hummingbirds have been an integral part of California plant communities for millions of years. Today there are approximately eighty species of native California plants that are pollinated primarily by the state's seven breeding hummingbird species The hummingbird family (Trochilidae, including 328 species) occurs exclusively in the New World, ranging from southern Canada and Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. A few regions, as in parts of the Great Plains, have no hummingbirds, and plant species relying on hummingbird pollination can occur only in habitats where there are breeding or dependable migrating hummingbird species. But at the other extreme, in the equatorial latitudes a locality may have 30 coexisting hummingbird species, and greater than half of all species occur in the northern Andes. Sixteen species have been observed breeding in the United States [ see box ], but only one, the ruby-throated hummingbird (
