The Life of Corliss Lamont
Corliss Lamont (1902-1995) is a 20th century American hero whose independent thinking challenged prevailing ideas in philosophy, economics, religion, patriotism, world peace and the exercise of our cherished civil liberties. Corliss Lamont was born to Wall Street wealth, yet he championed the cause of the working class, and was derided as a "Socialist" and a "traitor to his class". Corliss Lamont's Humanist belief that earthlings have evolved without supernatural intervention and are responsible for their own survival on this planet caused traditionalists to label him a "godless atheist". Corliss Lamont's patriotic insistence that the United States maintain a productive relationship with the Soviet Union in the face of prevailing rabid anti-communist hysteria earned him the accusation by Senator Joseph McCarthy of being "un-American". The Humanist Philosophy In Perspective (1984)
Frederick Edwords
Reprinted from The Humanist, January/February 1984 Never before has interest and talk about humanism been so widespread and rarely has the humanist philosophy been so poorly understood by both supporters and opponents. What kind of philosophy is humanism? To listen to its many detractors, one would imagine it was a doctrinaire collection of social goals justified by an arbitrary and dogmatic materialist-atheist world view. We often hear leaders of the New Right say that "Humanism starts with the belief that there is no god," that "evolution is the cornerstone of the humanist philosophy," that "all humanists believe in situation ethics, euthanasia, and the right to suicide,' and that "the primary goal of humanism is the establishment of a one-world government." Where did they get such notions? The source they most frequently cite is Humanist Manifesto II What we need to do is explain our philosophy in a more hierarchical manner, setting forth first our basic principles*those ideas that unite all humanists and form the foundation of the philosophy. Once this is done, we can follow with our beliefs about the world*belief which, by the nature of scientific inquiry, must be tentative. Then, once that ground work is established, we can recommend appropriate social policies, recognizing the differences of opinion within our ranks. With this approach, people will see humanism in a way I find to be more accurate* and in a way that reveals humanism's non-dogmatic and self- correcting nature.

LIFE AFTER DEATH, NIHILISM, AND MODERN PHILOSOPHY
(Third Millennium Final Edition - corrections and revisions are continuing)
What Nihilism, Rationalism, Humanism, Agnosticism, Existentialism, etc., Really Say About Your Future
Do you believe that life does end, or may end, at death? Everyone who believes that death may be the end should read the following essay from cover to cover. It represents a serious attempt to identify what may be a critical flaw in the foundation of many modern philosophies. It will help those who study Nihilism, Rationalism, Humanism, Agnosticism, and Existentialism, recognize questions that are probably already on their minds. It will address essential questions that you need to seek answers for. We will suggest that, whether they realize and admit it or not, anyone who does not believe in an "afterlife" is necessarily a "nihilist". In response to what appears to be a strong, intuitive, predisposition of readers to dismiss the conclusions of this essay as simply wrong, it has grown from a few pages to a lengthy, sometimes difficult to read, somewhat rambling, occasionally boring, text. For those who want a shorter introduction to our thoughts on nihilism, please read the summary of this essay by clicking here . Most readers will want to read the summary before proceeding with the detailed analysis. Those who choose to continue with this version may also find the summary interesting, as it includes some additional materials (the summary is from a chapter in a book we publish, which we provide links to at the end of this essay).

Manifesto III

The Institute for Humanist Studies offers a free course about humanism on its Continuum of Humanist Education website. Introduction to Humanism: A Primer on the History, Philosophy, and Goals of Humanism is authored by IHS executive director Matt Cherry. Students have access to a humanist glossary, auto-graded quizzes, and a community message board. What is humanism? Humanism is a philosophy of life inspired by humanity and guided by reason. Humanists think that science and reason provide the best basis for understanding the world around us. Humanists believe that moral values are properly founded on human empathy and scientific understanding. Humanists see no convincing evidence for gods, the supernatural, or life after death. Humanists believe we must live this life on the basis that it is the only life we'll have that, therefore, we must make the most of it for ourselves, each other, and our world. Humanist philosophies have arisen separately in many different cultures over many thousands of years. Today, even though most have never assigned a label to their most cherished ideas about life, knowledge, ethics, purpose, and the universe, a significant portion of society shares this non-religious approach to life. Whether or not they use the term humanism , tens of millions of Americans and hundreds of millions of people around the world agree with the humanist philosophy of living a happy and productive life based on reason and compassion.

In this century, humanism has come to refer to a philosophy that rejects traditional religious dogmas and usually theism itself. Although it is possible to be both a theist and a humanist, most who consciously use that term are atheists - especially if they are secular humanists . This modern humanism is a direct outgrowth of the Renaissance Humanism.

Recent What is Humanism? What is Humanist Philosophy? At its most basic, humanism involves any concern with humans (including human needs, human desires, and human experiences) first and foremost. Often, this also translates into giving human beings a special place in the universe on account of their abilities and faculties. Being a Humanist: What Does It Mean to Be a Humanist?

Welcome to my website! Thank you for visiting this website and I do hope that you find the articles here interesting and useful for either your personal and/or professional studies. I have been developing this website since 1999; initially as a means for sharing some of my own theological ideas, but also as an excuse to consider many more. It began to take its present form as a result of my teaching over five years where I used it as a major resource with my students. It is my personal philosophy that the educational resources here should as far as reasonably possible, be provided free of charge . The reason I produce these pages is so that people might be inspired to learn. I have throughout my teaching career, produced a number of resources which I also want to make available on this site . I hope that by doing this I might alleviate some of the pressure s of preparation faced by teachers who are already burdened in so many others ways.

This course will examine Foucault's radical critique of humanism and its consequences for thinking about the subject and power. We begin by considering Heidegger's rejection of humanism, specifically his critique of the subject as the ground of intelligibility of everything. We will consider what this overturning of the metaphysics of the subject implies for rethinking the human and the nature and danger of totalizing technological practices. We will then turn to Foucault's parallel critique of the subject, the study of "man", and disciplinary bio-power, and ask whether a new view of the subject and power can be developed in the aftermath of the humanism that Foucault and Heidegger so strongly criticize. humanism as both a program and a philosophy. Textbooks will tell you that the humanists of the Renaissance rediscovered the Latin and Greek classics (hence the "rebirth" or "renaissance" of the classical world), that humanist philosophy stressed the dignity of humanity, and that humanists shifted intellectual emphasis off of theology and logic to specifically human studies. In pursuing this program, the argument goes, the humanists literally created the European Renaissance and paved the way for the modern, secular world.
studia humanitatis . The studia humanitatis originated in the mddle ages and were all those educational disciplines outside of theology and natural science. Humanism was not opposed to logic, as is commonly held, but opposed to the particular brand of logic known as Scholasticism. In point of fact, the humanists actively revised the science of logic. Humanism, then, really begins during the middle ages in Europe; while the humanist scholars of the Renaissance made great strides and discoveries in this field, humanistic studies were really a product of middle ages. Not only that, the "rediscovery" of the classical world which was the hallmark of Renaissance humanism in reality began much earlier in the middle ages; as Europeans began to see themselves as a single ethnic group with a common origin in the middle ages, the recovery of classical literature, both Latin and Greek, became a concern for all the medieval centers of learning.
studia humanitatis consisted of more or less five disciplines drawn from the classical educational curriculum, called the
