In this course students will learn to recognize universal attributes of life and the evolutionary processes responsible for the great diversity in life forms. The relationship between structure and function will be examined at different levels. Cellular mechanisms of control and reproduction will be studied, as well as basic genetic principles. The flow of energy and chemicals through the environment and other ecological principles will be investigated. This course will require students to complete an independent scientific research project, to acquire and analyze data using computerized systems, and to communicate effectively using electronic media. This research project is a compulsory component of the Comprehensive Activity (see Science Program description for complete details). Thirty hours of laboratory complement the lecture material. 3 hrs. theory, 2 hrs. lab per wk. 101-BZE-05

The Prentice Hall Science Integrated Learning System series is a program for middle school or junior high school students. Designed to cover all relevant areas of science, this program consists of 19 books, each in a particular topic area, such as sound and light, the planet earth, and human biology and health. Seven science themes are incorporated into the program; the themes are energy, evolution, patterns of change, scale and structure, systems and interactions, unity and diversity, and stability. For each unit, teaching materials, ancillary student materials, and some optional components are available. Student Edition
Recommended grade level:
Reading level: early 8. Human Biology and Health introduces students to human body systems, their interactions with one another, and how disorders and other factors affect the health of body systems. Over 9 chapters, students learn about the multicellular organization of the human body. They study the various systems of the human body, including the skeletal and muscular systems, the digestive system, the circulatory system, the respiratory and excretory systems, and the nervous and endocrine systems. In addition, students learn about the male and female reproductive systems and about human reproduction and development. They also read about the immune system and diseases and learn about effects of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco on the body.

Grade levels are approximate and usually quite flexible. Preschool and Kindergarten: My First Body Book by Melanie and Chris Rice
1995, Dorling Kindersley, 32 pages, hardcover
This is a fun and very kid-friendly introduction to the body and its various functions and capabilities. It begins with a set of transparent overlays which portray the skeleton (skeletal system), the heart, lungs and blood (cardiovascular system), and the brain and nerves and digestive system. When I first got this book (back in the days when I was a DK representative for a short time) I worried that this book wouldn't hold up very well. After more than three years of use by little hands, I have to admit it's done quite well.
The rest of the book provides simple text, funny illustrations and the trademark DK photos covering the following topics: faces, skin and hair, muscles and bones, blood and heart, lungs and breathing, digestion, brain and nerves, eyes and seeing, ears and hearing, taste and smell, touch, growing up and "all about you."
The digestion is handled quite politely (no graphic pictures) and I was pleasantly surprised at how well the "growing up" section was handled. It begins with a very sweet and simple explanation of conception "A baby starts when a tiny sperm from the father joins with an egg inside the mother. The egg attaches itself to a part of the mother called the womb..." (pg. 29) and goes on to descriptions of the various stages of development of an unborn baby. Although the term fetus is mentioned, the baby is called a baby throughout the text!!! Again - no yucky pictures but not twaddly or dumbed-down either.

Welcome to The Human Body. Biology 105 is a one-semester survey course covering many functions of the human body, in wellness and disease. So, at the end of this semester you should know everything there is to know about human physiology, right? NO! Because there's no way you can learn everything in one semester, we have several possible approaches with which to attack this course. More often than not, the instructor decides what's important for you to know, and then proceeds with fast paced lectures which require either a knowledge of shorthand or a tape recorder. Studying for exams, which are often multiple guess or true/false, usually involves mass memorization. Retention of the details a few short months after the course is over is often nearly nil. My two objectives for this course are to:
    • 1) Provide you with an introductory and general understanding of human physiology and 2) Help develop your skills at knowing how to learn, not just what to learn. My teaching preference is to de-emphasize the memorization of facts (you can always look up answers to specific questions in your text), to make the course more interesting by seeking more active student participation, and to help make any knowledge gained more permanent. To do this, I:
