Human Body Symmetry General biology textbooks list symmetry as a key concept used by scientists to differentiate various groups of animals. Authors of these texts usually state that all animals except sponges have their body parts arranged along an axis. This arrangement may be one of radial symmetry, wherein parts are arranged around a central axis, or bilateral symmetry, wherein an animal's right half is a mirror image of its left half. Humans are placed in the group of bilaterally symmetrical animals (Phylum Chordata). But, how bilaterally symmetrical are we? Is our left half a true mirror image of our right half? A quick tour of one's internal anatomy reveals a lack of complete bilateral symmetry because we only have one heart and it is located in the left half of our thoracic cavity. Even the heart itself, with its four chambers, has a left ventricle that is substantially larger than the right ventricle. What do you think about our external anatomy? Is our left side a mirror image of our right side? Can you design an experiment to answer this question? Can you think of other symmetry questions that could be addressed from an examination of external human anatomy? Check some of the links below to learn how we have been investigating this problem and review some of the data we have collected. In fact, why don't you start measuring your body and let me [Buzz Hoagland

The Visible Human Project
A 39-year-old convicted murderer willed his body to science. After his execution, his body was frozen, cut into one-millimeter-thick slices, and photographed. The data were made available in 1994 on the Internet by the National Library of Medicine, data that has been used in a multitude of medical applications. To view two- and three-dimensional representations of the human body based on these data, visit any of these sites:
  • Center for Human Simulation : The University of Colorado developed three-dimensional reconstructions and surgical simulations from the Visible Human dataset. They have cross-sections from the visible female, as well as the visible male.
  • A Guided Tour of the Visible Human : The MAD Scientist Network at Washington University in St. Louis describes the Project: how the sections were made, how two-dimensional slices can create three-dimensional views, and what the three planes of the human body are. It also has a section where it identifies a body part that you click on, and lets you search for an image of a specific body part.
  • Visible Human Cross-Sections : The muscles, bones, and features of each slice are labeled and accompanied by corresponding MRI and CT images from Loyola University in Chicago.

The human body is inhabited by billions of bacteria. In fact, we normally carry ten times more prokaryotic than eukaryotic cells. Our mouths alone are host to four hundred identified - and probably hundreds more unidentified - species of bacteria. Most bacteria are benign to their host, some even provide valuable services. For example, bacteria in the gut aid digestion and generate vitamins used by their human hosts.
The bacteria we possess are an ecological community; thus, the principles of community ecology and evolution are vital in understanding how these bacteria (both the benign and the potentially harmful) live within us. Each bacterial species is adapted to the habitat and ecological niche it fills, existing in somewhat of an ecological balance. This balance helps thwart the invasion of pathogens, which must compete with resident bacteria for nutrients and space. Resident bacteria also produce antimicrobial proteins called bacteriocins , which inhibit the growth of related species.

Food and Digestion
Food is what is required by humans to grow and survive, and provide a 'fuel' for the energy needed in our biological reactions As opposed to plants that can acquire their food from the soil and sunlight, animals are required to eat foodstuffs in order to create the energy they need to survive. These foods contain many compounds and elements that are useful to our body and our daily functions. This food is entered into the body via the mouth, where enzymes such as lysozyme begin to breakdown the food while it is chewed. When this food is broken down into smaller pieces it can then be swallowed, where it travels down the oesophagus towards the stomach. The stomach then continues to break down the foodstuff. The stomach at this point is filled with a type of acid that further breaks down the food, until it is in a semi-liquid state. Note that the stomach only acts as a storage point at this stage, until the food slowly passes into the duodenum, which is part of the small intestine. It is here where the food is completely broken down, in the following manner:
  • Proteins are broken down into amino acids Fats into fatty acids Complex sugars into simple sugars
From here, you can see that a complex product (the food you eat) is stripped bare, until the substances that they are broken down to can be used by the body in some way. By breaking down these foodstuffs to their most basic nature, the body can then rebuild these substances as and when required, for example, to create enzymes.

BellaOnline's Biology Editor Biological Set Point for Body Weight What is the body weight set point? Is this something mysterious and evel, which is to blame for the obesity epidemics we all are facing right now?
Of course you do know what the set point means, just think of your refrigerator: it's the point you set to maintain the inside temperature you want.
To maintain the temperature you want, your refrigerator needs a few simple hardware gadgets.
1. a thermometer to measure the actual temperature in the refrigerator; 2. some wire to send the reading to the thermostat; 3. a motor to produce more cool air (if needed); 4. a controlling device that reads temperature information and compares it with the temperature you wanted.

Human biology
Human biology is an academic field of biology which focuses on humans ; it is closely related to medicine primate biology, and a number of other fields. A human being is a multicellular eukaryote made up of an estimated 100,000 billion cells . As a species, humans are primates and can be distinguished from other primates by their more highly evolved brains. Even though humans are multicellular animals, many of the basic life processes of human cells are basically the same as in simple unicellular eukaryotes such as yeast and even prokaryotes One of the major biological differences betweens humans and yeast is that yeast are unicellular zygote , but when that cell divides, it forms an embryo . The early embryo is made up of totipotent stem cells , which go on to differentiate . Differentiation is the process by which an unspecialized cell becomes specialized into one of the many cells that make up the body, such as a heart, liver, or muscle cells. During differentiation, certain genes are turned on, or become activated, while other genes are switched off, or inactivated. This process is intricately
