    II. History
The Protestant Reformation, begun by Martin Luther in the early 16th century in Germany, soon found its way to France. Fueled by the protests of Luther against the abuses of the Catholic Church, Protestantism grew rapidly in a country stringently ruled by a Catholic king and government. The reign of Francis I (1515-47) began the persecution of Protestants in France.

    “To Huguenot or Not”
What is a Huguenot? They were exiles who fled France during the Reign of Louis XIV when he revoked the “Edict of Nantes” and began the wholesale persecution of his Protestant subjects in 1685. The “Edict of Nantes,” made in 1598 by Henry IV, gave Huguenots limited religious freedom. When it was revoked, Huguenots were no longer safe in France and they fled North, South, East and West to every foreign port possible. A future anywhere was preferable to a life in France where Huguenots no longer had civil or religious liberties. They were forbidden to proselytize, forbidden to criticize the Catholic Church, forbidden to conduct their daily lives as freely as their neighbors, and finally even forbidden to exist. The term Huguenot was applied to non-Catholics and is supposed to derive from the word Hugeon that is defined as individuals who walk at night. For over a hundred years, the only safe place of worship for Protestants had been dark caves, thus the term nightwalkers. For Louis XIV, the matter of religious beliefs was merely a pretext as he used the Catholic Church as a club for wholesale confiscation of property owned by Protestants. He used the proceeds to line the pockets of the dissolute nobles of his Court.

has existed in various forms since the late Seventeenth Century as the emblem of French Protestant refugees. It comprises a Maltese Cross made of a four-petalled Lily of France, symbolizing the Four Gospels. The eight rounded points of the cross represent the Eight Beatitudes. Between the petals are four fleurs-de-lis each with three leaves representing the Twelve Apostles. Hanging from the bottom is a pendant dove, which symbolizes the Holy Spirit. Who were the Huguenots?

Member of The Huguenot Society of Texas
    St. Bartholomew Chapter
Houston, Texas Part 1 (May 1997): Huguenot Origins Some knowledge of the background of the Huguenot movement is essential to doing successful research on Huguenot ancestors. In this first part of a 2-part article, we provide a much condensed version of the Huguenot story. In the second part of this article, which will appear in the August newsletter, additional information will be provided on Huguenot research at Clayton Library and a bibliography of the more important Huguenot sources will be published. The term ‘Huguenot’ is used to describe a particular branch of the Protestant religion—aligned with the theology of John Calvin—that arose during the Reformation and flourished in France after 1520. Although certainly religious in nature, the Huguenot movement also had very distinct political components, which put many of its followers in opposition to the French Monarchy. This, coupled with the fact that the Huguenot’s Protestant theological convictions were in direct conflict with the Roman Catholic Church, set the stage for serious confrontations between the Huguenots and the French Church-State. During the reigns of Henry II of France (1547-1559) and Francis II (1559-1560), the Huguenots grew in both number and political influence and came to include many prominent members of the French nobility, including such influential figures as Anthony, King of Navarre. This increase in strength, however, was looked upon as a threat to both the Monarchy and to the Catholic Church and would eventually lead to civil and religious strife that would see many Huguenot families persecuted and driven out of France.

    HUGUENOT FREERS
Copy of FREER Coat of Arms courtesy of Edie Elting and the Huguenot Society This web page has been made possible through the generousity of Teresa Wilson (nee: Freer) of Texas whom has traced her ancestors to Hugo Freer (the Patentee) who was born in France and made his way to what is now New Paltz, New York. This information given here is from Terri's research and is placed here in the hopes that it might aid others in tracing their roots.
    The HUGO FREER HOUSE 1694 - 1735
Built on "The Street of the Huguenots, New Paltz, N.Y. it is constructed in two sections. The North End by Hugo Freer, The Patentee, in 1694 and the South Portion Addition by Johannes M. Low in 1735. The Wooden Section was added in the late Eighteenth Century (drawing by John Gould). HISTORY OF THE FREER HOMESTEAD It is believed that the north end of the house was built by Hugo Freer, the Patentee, as early as 1694. A bill of sale definitely established it in his possession before 1706. The two windows on the north and one on the west are original. The door was located at the second west window - note the difference in the heights of the windows. An outside door is blocked over in the center of the south wall of the living room. The projecting beams would indicate that originally this room had a hood fireplace like that at the Jean Hasbrouck Memorial House. A small mantel-piece held candles, so soot marks are still visible on the beams. The south section was probably added during the 1720's, and contained a hall and a single large room. The fire-place is now blocked over. The so-called "dark bedroom" was the result of dividing the large room into hall, bath, and bedroom. One of the attic windows on the south wall is original. The one to the west was converted from a door used to bring up the hay into the loft. The wooden lean-to was added about the time of the Revolution A cobbler's shop was located therein at the southeast corner, now the study.
