Emigration Information of the Nineteenth Century
And Ships They Came On:
The information on these pages has been extracted from various government records, as well as the odd shipping record (mostly from the Allan Line). It contains, voyage accounts, emigration information, lists of ships sailing to Canada, information on the ports, and on the people. Many of these lists give the name of the ship, Master, Port of Departure, Port of Arrival and other such information. Some list the organization which sponsored the emigrants. Since passenger lists are rarely available for the early ships which came to Canada there are few of those, but other sources are being sought. The Immigration reports of the government sometimes contain names, but only rarely. Passenger lists for arrivals after 1865 can be obtained on microfilm, and a database of arrivals for is online, from the National Archives of Canada. Post 1935 records are available. Also, check out the

Hello Listers,
A good time for some light reading at my house. And so
I thought that I might see if others are interested in
a little project. It is about the 'Genealogy', if you
like, of the Huguenot / Walloon "Family".
I offer these thoughts on how I see this unique
"Family". Maybe we could add people or perhaps some should not be included? It has been said that the Reformation always looked backward. Indeed, Calvin himself once wrote “Young people have lost that deference to their elders on which the social order depends”. And so in debating the “Genealogy” of our Huguenot / Walloon ancestors and who influenced their religious thoughts, perhaps there is a need to go back much further than the period commonly discussed? Most on this list possibly only think of the 1600’s; of “most”, some will expand, going back to say the early 1500’s.

Huguenots in the Netherlands
At the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century the Netherlands was enriched with a big stream of refugees from France. They were the so-called Huguenots and many settled permanently. They also fled to England, Germany, Switzerland and the English colonies in North America, including Massachusetts, New York and South Carolina. The estimation is that between 400,000 and 1 million fled from France. The chance then becomes very likely that, as we research our family genealogy, we will discover Huguenots in our branches. This seems to be the case in the search of my forefathers and gave me a reason to investigate the Huguenots on a larger scale. In the 16th century, in France, a following evolved of Calvinism, a reformed Protestant stream. The followers of this new religious stream became known as Huguenots. It is not known where the name evolved from. It may a bastardisation of Eidgenossen (eiguenots in French). Protestantism and it's principles, as it was known, was accepted by many members of the nobility, the intellectual classes and the middle classes. It included Queen Margaret of Navarre and her brother, King Francis I of France. It also became more political as from the year 1560. At the end of his reign, Francis began to turn against the Protestants and Henry II, who was the successor followed his example. However the French Protestants grew in numbers and at their first synod (1559) 15 churches were represented. Two years later at the second synod more than 2,000 churches were represented.

It is known that John PETTYPIECE of Ireland was Protestant. It is also known that there was someone by the name of Henri Richard PETITPIERRE Another theory is that the original name is PETIPAS, this comes from the Acadian Deportation during the French and Indian War. At some point during the persecution of French protestants, probably around 1686, Jacques decided to head to England. Tradition has it that his group was caught worshipping in secret in a forest near Lyons, but were discovered by government patrols. Capture meant hanging for violating the Edict of Fontainebleau issued in 1685 (The Revocation).
