Click here to find out more Hugenots Edicts Two kings of France issued separate edicts that effected the then powerful country's society, politics, and influenced the fledgling colonies. The Edict of Nantes, dated April 13, 1598, was issued to protect the new sect to a certain degree. As long as they complied by the other parts of the Edict, subjects of the King of France could freely practice their religion without fear of reprisals. They could not be forced to belong to the Catholic Church. Really, it was quite broad-minded when you consider that Western Europe had just emerged from the Middle Ages and the Vatican had as much influence on the laws and social structure as the kings themselves. Almost ninety years later, the more liberal treatment of the protestants was revoked with the Edict of Fontainebleau on October 22, 1685. Persecution, which had been gaining momentum, was officially sanctioned by the government of France. It would continue for another two hundred years. This Edict specifically told anyone who would not convert to Catholicism to leave France and its colonies... within two weeks! The consequences were severe if they did not leave - a trip to the galleys was imminent, if caught practicing another religion. The mass exodus of the French protestants had begun.

Huguenot Genealogy When Martin Luther stoke up is " 95 th thesis " on the door of Wittemberg Castle church’s on october 31 st 1517, he launches the active phasis of the Reformation. Then with him, and Calvin, and Zwingli, Europes enters the Spiriritual Renaissance after the Artistical one. It will also be one of her history bloodiest century, and one of the darkest of the Roman Church. The persecutions against the Huguenots in the Kingdom of France obliged most of them to migrate in two times. The first one was the logical result of the Religions Wars, the second one was the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIVth in 1685. For Genealogy, we will notice that since 1541, Huguenots have written Baptems Registers with names of the child, of its father and mother. Marriage and Burials Registers will be made in the same way but differently depending on cities or pastors. Even during the difficults " Desert " years, Registers were held by pastors sometimes on families Bibles. Most of Huguenots who have left France found protection in England, Scotland, Holland, in some german states, and even in Russia. Others left Europe for Florida, Louisiana, or Quebec. Some join the English and Dutch families to the American Colonies or South Africa.
