147. Gustav Lindenthal
Essay by Steven Cangemi about Lindenthal's dream to construct a bridge across the hudson river.
http://www.ulster.net/~cangemi/lindenthal.html
A Run for Gustav Lindenthal
Popughkeepsie, New York
April 7, 1999
Gustav Lindenthal had a dream. He wanted to build a bridge across the lower Hudson River, connecting Manhattan with New Jersey. I've got a far more modest dream. I want to run across the Hudson River on one of the bridges that has subsequently been built. On Wednesday, I set out from work in Poughkeepsie, New York, to run to and across the Mid-Hudson Bridge. I ran along a perimeter road to the northern edge of the plant site. I then cut through some condo complexes, to avoid having to run on US-9. Here in suburbia, roads don't seem to go through. They are just spider veins coming off the main artery. I come out onto the arterial at a Courtyard by Mariott. I'm pleased by how much strip running I have avoided. It is a warm day, with temperature already in the seventies. Running along a six lane commercial strip makes the heat more unpleasant. I reach Locust Grove, the home of Samuel F.B. Morse, inventor of the telegraph. Just north of Locust Grove is the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, where Matthew Vassar and thousands of other Hudson Valley residents make their permanent home. I lose the sidewalk at this point, but the grassy strip isn't bad for running. Lindenthal was already a successful bridge builder when he came to New York City in 1885. He made his reputation in Pittsburgh, where he designed and supervised construction of bridges, including the Smithfield Street Bridge. Pittsburgh is a living primer of bridge construction. I don't know of a city with a denser collection of varied bridge designs. The Smithfield Street Bridge crosses the Monongahela River, connecting downtown Pittsburgh with "Sahside". This beautiful bridge is immediately recognizable with its lenticular trusses.

150. Hudson River Valley Lighthouses
Information from the hudson river Lighthouse Coalition includes descriptions of the Little Red Lighthouse at Fort Washington Park in Manhattan, among others.
http://www.hudsonlights.com/
Home Page Lighthouses and the Mighty Hudson From the moment of Hendrik Hudson's trip up the mighty river until today, the Hudson River is one of the most important commercial and recreational rivers in America. Hundreds of cargo ships ply its waters and thousands of pleasure craft skip along its waves. The majestic Hudson transports the goods of America from the inland ports out to the greatest deep water port in the country, New York Harbor. In the early history of the continent, great sailing ships drove the economy of the Colonies as they transported goods from the frontiers of North America down the Hudson to England and beyond. As America became a nation, the mighty Hudson became the central battleground of the Revolution, with the pivotal battle of the Revolution being fought on its banks in Saratoga. With America growing and its economy booming, the connection between the Hudson River and the western inland territories was made with the Erie Canal and commercial shipping traffic exploded. Even today in this age of instant air travel the Hudson serves as the primary commercial artery between the Port of New York and the regions upstate. Great barges and tankers filled with goods travel up and down the river keeping the Empire State moving and thriving. The traditions of industry first established in America on the banks of the Hudson continue to thrive feeding the Hudson with a continual flow of goods going to market.

Excellence In Community Rowing
Past, Present and Future!
Est. 1998 WHO WE ARE
Hudson River Rowing Association (HRRA) is a not-for-profit, member and volunteer supported organization that serves the public in and surrounding Dutchess County, New York. Each year through our rowing programs, community outreach and support of scholastic rowing teams that serve 8 local high schools we are able to help over 600 residents of the Hudson Valley experience the majesty of the Hudson River through rowing.
HRRA PROGRAMS
HRRA is a "Community" rowing organization - our members come from all walks of life and from all over the region. By sharing the limited and expensive resources required to provide rowing opportunities we are able to reduce the cost of individual participation and make rowing a viable, affordable and accessible sport for anyone who wants to learn. Each year we offer over 15 different organized program opportunities for people to row on the Hudson River.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
In addition to our traditional rowing teams we also teach the community by providing adaptive rowing opportunities for the disabled, scouting programs, Learn-to-Row day and by participating in the Kids Expo each year. In addition HRRA sponsors safety and educational clinics for regional coaches and rowers to ensure the entire rowing community operates safely and successfully.
EVENTS
Each year HRRA sponsors numerous events that provide racing and spectator opportunities for local athletes and their families. In the winter we host an indoor rowing race that brings 200 athletes from throughout the region to compete on ergometers and each summer we host two regattas that provide racing opportunities on the Hudson for teams from throughout the entire length of the Hudson.

157. NRDC: Healing The Hudson River
An overview of the threedecade-long battle to remove toxic PCB's from the hudson river, from the Natural Resources Defense Council.
http://www.nrdc.org/water/pollution/hhudson.asp

Water Pollution
In Brief : History
Healing the Hudson River
The U.S. EPA has finally ordered General Electric to clean up the toxic mess it left in this grand old river.
One of the signature struggles of the modern environmental movement the three-decade fight to remove toxic PCBs from New York's Hudson River may finally be nearing resolution. In August 2002, environmentalists scored a decisive victory when Christie Whitman, head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, announced that the EPA would indeed issue a plan to dredge PCBs from the river. General Electric, the company that caused the pollution, has vigorously opposed any such plan. But urged on by thousands of concerned citizens and supported by mounting scientific evidence, the EPA stood firm. On December 4th, 2001, Whitman, despite GE's efforts to get her to change course, remained resolute about cleaning up the mess the company made of this grand, historic American waterway. The stakes were huge and not just for the Hudson. Thanks to the toxic burden GE discharged into the Hudson, it is home to the country's largest Superfund site. If the company had evaded accountability for this harm, it would have undermined efforts to hold other corporate polluters responsible for their actions.
Three Decades of Dumping
PCBs are still leaching into the Hudson from GE's Hudson Falls plant.
