Hudson River School Landscape Paintings,
For the painters in the Hudson River school (approx. 1825 to 1875), landscape paintings represented a reaction against the industrialization of cities like London and a joyful embrace of the unspoiled and untamed American wilderness. In the skillful hands of painters like Thomas Cole Asher B. Durand Albert Bierstadt and Frederic Edwin Church , the art of landscape painting became imbued with a romantic, allegorical beauty. A group of painters who created glorious paintings of the wild American landscape Thomas Cole , the leading artist in the group, painting many works of New York's Hudson River Valley . Others, including Albert Bierstadt and Frederic Edwin Church , traveled to the wildernesses of North and South America and painted vast canvasses which enraptured the American public. Some artists in this group explored ways to use light effects to capture dramatic skies, mists and sunsets, forming a subgroup of artists called Luminists

(91.9 x 127.6 cm); Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Gift of John Junius Morgan in memory of his mother, Juliet Pierpont Morgan, 1923.253 From the late 18th century through the Civil War years, the land and its cultivation dominated American artistic and literary expression. America’s nature poets, such as William Cullen Bryant and Henry David Thoreau, used the nation’s greatest resource, its terrain, as an emblem for American freedom and democracy. Similarly, painters found the bounty of nature a subject capable of expressing the nation’s hopes and aspirations for progress. Nature and the Nation: Hudson River School Landscape Painting from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art showcases the work of America’s first school of landscape painters. These powerful visions of the American landscape and other scenes from around the globe are a visual celebration of the nation and its potential for greatness. The exhibition was organized by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut, which houses one of the world’s finest collections of Hudson River School paintings. It includes more than 50 works by 25 individual artists such as Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, and Asher B. Durand. By the 1850s, landscape painting dominated the annual exhibitions held in New York and other metropolitan centers, receiving the lion’s share of critical attention, and the seasonal travels of artists were faithfully reported in the daily newspapers. Over the course of a decade, the work of landscape painters developed into a national school centered in the Hudson River Valley. Thomas Cole, considered the founder of the Hudson River School, inspired a generation of painters with his bucolic scenes of sweeping valleys seen from mountaintops, imagined historical subjects in dramatic mountain settings, and grand visions of the pastoral countryside.

This summer celebrate one of the greatest moments in American art and imagination with the opening of American Eden: Landscape Paintings of the Hudson River School . Featuring 55 works by 25 artists, the exhibition presents a breathtaking panorama of 19th-century American landscape painting, the first major survey presented in North Carolina in almost 20 years. About the Exhibition In the middle decades of the 19 th century, landscape painting dominated American art. Beginning with Thomas Cole, an English-born artist with a love of the wilderness, two generations of landscape painters consciously set out to create the first truly American art movement. Based in New York City, they became known collectively as the Hudson River school. These artists embraced landscape painting as a means of addressing profound philosophical questions of life and human aspiration. Artists such as Cole and his great student Frederic Church imagined the natural world as grand opera. With or without actors, the Mount Etna from Taormina (back to top) Captions

Historic and Artistic Events (1825 - 1885) and Vocabulary FEDERAL (1790 - 1830) After the Revolution, America had to adjust to a new identity as an independent nation. Portraiture focused on reverence to such heroes as George Wshington and Thomas Jefferson. Occasionally, the style became larger than life, conveying heroism through oversize figures in ornamental military dress. The events of the Revolution also provided American painters with new subject matter that offered viewers a rich sense of patriotism. However, portraiture, rendered in a realistic or romantic style, remained the principal art form. HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL
As crowded industrial cities arose in the east, reverence for the undisturbed land resulted in an appreciation for landscape painting. Led by Thomas Cole, the group of artists known as the Hudson River School created works that were intended not only to memorialize the grandeur of the American landscape but also to serve as instruments for spiritual contemplation. A romantic view of nature was evident in literature as well, in the work of James Fenimore Cooper, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Washington Irving. Landscape painting dominated the art scene during this art period.

Exercise on the Hudson River School of Painters
Background: The Hudson River School was a prominent school of American landscape artists, during the mid-19th century. Many of the artists whose works belong to this school began life as engravers or technical craftspeople. Prior to the Civil War, their works sold very well and one might assume that this reflected an interest, at least with respect to the wealthy, towards the natural, untouched environment. Towards the latter part of the century, with the ascendency of impressionism, artists came to value technique more and the general public and critics found fault with the realism of landscape painting and the school went into decline. Recently, art critics, such as Barbara Novak, have begun to re-interpret and analyze in a different manner the Hudson River school and the paintings have gained a new following.

Time To Allow: 2 to 4 days, depending upon number of attractions selected for tours
    Description/Highlights/Points of Interest
In the mid-1800s the Hudson River Valley became a popular place for artistic expression as well as relaxation because of its lovely and dynamic topography. The river is flanked by terraces and mountains that are intersected by dramatic palisades and escarpments. Over the course of the 50 years (1825-1875) that the Hudson River school of painting thrived, landscape painters often documented Hudson River scenery, and generally painted in studios and homes in New York City, located at the mouth of the river, and in the valleys along the Hudson. At the same time, wealthy New York families, drawn by the enchantment of the Hudson River Valley, were establishing second homes there. For this tour, start in New York City, where many Hudson River School masterpieces are exhibited, then move north through the Hudson River Valley to view the inspiring landscapes, tour several artists' homes and studios, and visit the historic homes of some of our nation's leaders. Just a short drive or subway ride away, The Brooklyn Museum of Art (200 Eastern Pkwy, Brooklyn, 11238; 718/638-5000), the second largest art museum in the U.S., houses a permanent collection containing more that one million objects, ranging from ancient Egyptian artifacts to contemporary masterpieces. A bold reinstallation of works from the permanent collection, called American Identities: A New Look, fills seven large galleries with works that expand the definition of American art, including an extensive Hudson River School collection.
