Hudson River School Paintings The Hewitts collected paintings from the Hudson River School of Art. Eight of the eleven members of this group are represented in the Manor: James Peale, Jasper F. Cropsey, John F. Kensett, William C.A. Frerichs, Thomas Cole, Martin J. Heade, Casilear and Thomas Doughty. This page was written by Britt Terjesen. Click on each image for a larger view. Painting by Martin J. Heade (1819-1904) named "Ringwood Meadow" or "Landscape with Cattle", dating to 1859. A Pastoral Scene done possibly at Ringwood Estate depicting Wanaque Stream with cows. This painting is representative of the Luminist Style done by The Hudson River Artists. Painting by Thomas Cole (1801-1848) named "Ramapo Lake Scene", oil on pulp board. Cole was known for his Romantic/Mysticism Style. He was called the founder of the American School of landscape painting. In 1825 he joined the Hudson River School. Painting by James Peale (1749-1831) named "Delaware Water Gap". Oil on wood. Inscribed: "Painted by James Peale in the 69th year of his age 1819". J.Peale started out his painting career doing miniatures on ivory and later turned to still life painting. The miniature painting caused him to lose his eyesight which made him turn to landscape painting. This is believed to be one of his last paintings.

Thomas Cole at Mount Holyoke The Hudson River School painter inspires a play and an exhibit. By Chris Rohmann The centerpiece of the current art exhibit at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, is the most famous and influential of all American landscape paintings. "View from Mount Holyoke, Northampton, Massachusetts, after a Thunderstorm" (more commonly known as "The Oxbow") was painted by Thomas Cole in 1836. On loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, it anchors the exhibit "Changing Prospects," an array of artworks and artifacts celebrating the mountain as an inspiration for both art and tourism. In connection with the exhibition, the Mount Holyoke College Theatre Department is producing the biographical play "Thomas Cole: A Waking Dream." In "The Oxbow," Thomas Cole juxtaposes wilderness with civilization, sunshine with storm clouds, a rugged mountainside overlooking a tranquil valley. In his play about Thomas Cole, Donald Sanders juxtaposes fact and fancy, realism and surrealism, humans and angels. "Thomas Cole" is a whimsical biography of the founder and leading figure in the Hudson River School of landscape painting. English-born, Ohio-bred, with little formal training but a prodigious talent and an expansive imagination, Cole revitalized the landscape genre by combining the eye of a realist with the heart of a romantic. At the age of 24, Cole was famous and sought-after, the first American celebrity artist.

Sanford R. Gifford (1823-1880) was a leading member of the second generation of the Hudson River School of landscape painting and, along with John F. Kensett, became one of the country's leading Luminist painters.
His most important and famous painting, "A Gorge in the Mountains (Kauterskill Clove)," a 48-by-39 7/8-inch oil on canvas in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a sensational landscape that inspired Eugene Benson, writing in The New-York Commercial Advertiser under the name Proteus, to comment that:

Rarely exhibited drawings from the Hudson River School collection of Dia Art Foundation will be on exhibition at Vassar's Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center Prints and Drawings Galleries from Saturday, April 12, through Sunday, June 15. Collected in the late 1970s and early 1980s by noted American artist Dan Flavin for Dia Art Foundation, these drawings present a wide range of Hudson River School subjects, from Lake George in the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York and the valleys of the Catskill Mountains in southern New York to mountainous, picturesque sites abroad. The Hudson River School painters John Frederick Kensett and Aaron Draper Shattuck are especially well represented. "These drawings engage us not only with their elegant images, but also, ironically, with their direct link to one of the most prominent American artists of recent decades, Dan Flavin. Flavin's sculptures of fluorescent lights in white and various colors turn gallery spaces into glowing abstract art environments. He assembled these earlier works, and it is this attraction to the qualities and nuances of light that makes his interests in the Hudson River School so intriguing. The effects of light upon a landscape were a central preoccupation for these nineteenth-century artists," said Patricia Phagan, the Philip and Lynn Straus Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, who organized the exhibition and prepared an accompanying illustrated checklist.

Hudson River School Exhibition Opens at Worcester Art Museum
WORCESTER, MASS., JANUARY 29, 1999 - Bask in the tranquility of works from America's first national school of landscape painting with "All that is Glorious Around Us": Paintings from the Hudson River School, on view at the Worcester Art Museum from March 13 - June 27, 1999. The exhibition showcases approximately 75 paintings by leading Hudson River School painters such as Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, and John Frederick Kensett, as well as accomplished examples by lesser-known artists like Regis Francois Gignoux and John Hermann Carmiencke. The majority of the works are from a single private collector, eight works are from the Worcester Art Museum's permanent collection, and a small group of tourist prints are from the American Antiquarian Society. "My goal is to encourage people to recognize that the Hudson River School consisted of many more than the handful of famous painters usually featured in an exhibition of their work, including professional women and African-American artists," says David R. Brigham, curator of American art at the Worcester Art Museum. "I would also like visitors to understand the important cultural themes that are addressed in the works of art, such as notions of change in the land, poetic and religious reflections on nature, and attitudes towards new uses of the land that included tourism and industry." Hudson River School painters were more than talented artists. As if on a mission, they helped create romantic reflections on America's virgin landscape before and during the country's transformation in the 19th century. Land was part of the national consciousness at the time and was considered an inherent part of democracy, wealth, and God's provisions. Hudson River School painters captured this sentiment by painting dramatic landscape scenes that revealed both the tranquility and turmoil settlers could experience as they braved territory in the new world.
