Hudson's date of birth and the details of his early life are undocumented. Records indicate that he was married and had three sons. He led four important expeditions, three for the English and one for the Dutch. In 1607 he was engaged by the English Muscovy Company to find a new route to Asia. He was directed to search for a northeast passage in the open waters between Greenland and Spitzbergen. Unable to find an opening in the ice, he returned to England in September. The Muscovy Company financed a second voyage by Hudson in 1608. Taking a more easterly route than he had the previous year, Hudson sailed along the coast of Norway and around the North Cape, hoping to find a passage between Spitzbergen and Novaya Zemlya. Again finding the sea blocked by ice, he returned to England. By this time, Hudson had become widely known in Europe as an explorer of the Arctic waters. In 1609 the Lords Seventeen of the Dutch United East India Company took him into their service and asked him to search once again for the northeast passage. It was on this voyage on his ship, the

Champlain was sent by the King of France on several expeditions starting in 1603. His first sailed on an expedition led by Francois DuPont. He then sailed up the St. Lawrence River explored the land around it, explored Nova Scotia and the Great Lakes. Lake Champlain, is named after him. Champlain claimed almost all of Canada for France. He set up trading posts in Canada. He became friendly with the Algonquin and Huron Indians. This caused a problem with the Iroquois Indians and a fight with them.

THE HUDSON FAMILY
The name was racially Norman in origin and came to England with William the Conqueror. It had various forms and spellings such as Oddason, Hoddenson. It has always been a tradition in the family that Henry Hudson III, son of Henry Hudson the explorer emigrated to Delaware in 1656. It is from this beginning that we trace back. The first authentic genealogy is found in the Church of the Grey Friar in London. Here is the tomb of Rudolph Hudson "citizen and alderman of London" who died June 27, 1530. He had eight sons and three daughters Thomas, John, Edward, Henry and Christopher are the only ones identifiable. Thomas, a captain in the Russian Fur Co. died in 1564 and John died without issue. Henry, the son of Rudolph, was also an alderman of London and a director of the Russian Fur Co. Later he became associated with the Dutch East India Company. He died December 22, 1555 and is buried at St. Dunstans in the East. He had estates in Lincolnshire and Sussex. His wife's name was Barbara. They had a family of 11 children of which Abigail, Thomas, John and Henry are identifiable.

The Enigma of Hudson's Ancestry H udson's Bay today is an interesting part of the dynamic Canadian north. It takes its name from Henry Hudson, the English explorer. Hudson, after voyaging to the river, named in his honour, in New York for the Dutch, set sailing on an English venture to explore the Northwest Passage, this was thought, by the late medieval and early modern explorers of the Americas, to be the fast route to the far Orient. By following this fabled passage, it was hoped the monopoly of the Portuguese and later the Spaniards in the lucrative spice and silk trades could be broken. The quest for this Nothwest passage was to dominate a number of explorations of our continent.
We do know that our navigator did have connections with the Muscovy Company (otherwise known as the Worshipful Company and Fellowship of the Merchant Adventurers trading to Muscovia, or the Russian Merchants). Rodney Dennys, the present Somerset herald of Arms at the College of Arms, informs us that, "these merchants traded cloth of all sorts to Russia and also ‘much defective Wines and fruits, not fit to be spent in this Kingdom (of England)', together with all sorts of English commodities. In return they imported skins, fish, caviar, potash, isinglass and much else besides" (Dennys, 1975: 149). It was one of the Muscovy Company's vessels that Hudson used on his voyage to Canada. This might also indicate that Hudson was familiar with the perils of sailing in the far north and with the dangers of ice floes and icebergs, perhaps even with wintering over in a given location, before having entered Canadian waters.

VOICE ONE: [Image Removed] (Picture - Al Poelzl) This is Steve Ember. VOICE TWO: And this is Shirley Griffith with the VOA Special English program, EXPLORATIONS. Today we tell about a famous river on the east coast of the United States, the Hudson. ((THEME)) [Image Removed] (Picture - Joe Deutsch) VOICE ONE: The first European explorer of the New World to see the mouth of the Hudson River was Englishman John Cabot in Fourteen Ninety-Eight. Yet it was not until Sixteen-Oh-Nine that a European explorer entered the river. He sailed north from the Atlantic Ocean as far as his ship could go, about two-hundred-fifty kilometers. That explorer was Henry Hudson. Captain Hudson and his sailors - English and Dutch - were working for the Dutch East India Company. Like the other explorers, they were looking for the northwest passage, a way to China and India that did not exist. [Image Removed] (Picture - Ted Spiegel) VOICE TWO: At first, Captain Hudson did not know that the water he entered was a river. After all, the water flowed from the ocean in the south toward the north. The water was very salty, like the ocean. On both sides of the river, Captain Hudson saw great hills and mountains. After sailing for two-hundred-fifty-kilometers, the ship reached the point on the river where the city of Albany, New York stands today. From that point to the north, the river was not deep enough for his ship to sail. Hudson saw that the river did not provide a way to India and China. He had failed. He turned his ship around and sailed back to the Atlantic Ocean and then home to Holland.

They were bred to withstand cold northern winters, with most from rugosa or Kordesii parents (latter bred in Germany in the late 1940s), and featuring many reds. They were named after famous, and not so famous, Canadian explorers. How well do you know the following selections from this series of 22 or so, and these Canadians? document.write(''); Life and Times of Henry Hudson About the Half Moon Mercatur's World: The Ghost of Henry Hudson Looking for Henry Hudson Set adrift by mutineers during his expedition to find a Northwest Passage, the famous explorer was never heard from again. What was his fate? In 1611, Henry Hudson was on his second trip to the New World, seeking a shortcut through North America to the riches of the Orient. After having wintered over in what is now known as James Bay, the southern pocket of the huge bay that would be named for Hudson, some of his crew had had enough. Low on food and tired of the quixotic rule of the autocratic master of the ship, they rebelled. Hudson and several scurvy-sick crew members were set adrift in a shallop and never seen again. Apart from a fragment of Hudson's journal, only one eyewitness account of the fateful trip survives. It was written by Abacuk Prickett, a London haberdasher, servant of one of the expedition's sponsors and a surviving mutineer, and it may have been influenced by a need to defend his actions in court. Mutiny was a hangable offense. And what of Hudson and his men? Stories have come down over the centuries to the inhabitants of the James Bay area telling of fair-skinned strangers on their shores. Could they have been the abandoned master and his crew?

    Henry Kelsey
In 1670, the Hudson's Bay Company was chartered , mostly through the work of the French traders Groseilliers and Radisson . Its first inland explorer was Henry Kelsey. Henry Kelsey entered the service of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1684, at the age of seventeen, and worked together with Groseilliers and Radisson. He liked and respected the Indian life, and was, as the Company's committee described " ...delighting much in Indians company, never better pleased than when he is travelling among them. " He spoke Cree , and possibly Assiniboin as well. From 1688 to 1690, with an Indian companion, he travelled north to the lands north of the Churchill River, but did not contact the Indians he had hoped to find. The Hudson's Bay Company wanted to contact the Indians that lived more inland, hoping to convince them to start trading with the Company. This way the Company's own trade would be extended, and it was prevented that this whole trading area would fall in hands of the French. He reached the north coast of Lake Winnipeg, and spent two years in the country around the Saskatchewan River. He succeeded in his order to convince the Indians to come to the Hudson's Bay to trade, despite the objections of the well-armed Cree Indians , tried to make peace between the Cree and the Gros Ventres, and lived among the various native peoples of the region for two years.

    Henry hudson - explorer
Not much is known of Henry Hudson's life before he began his quest to find the northern trade route, but he accomplished more in four years than most do in a lifetime.
Much of English explorer Henry Hudson’s life is a mystery, but the years 1607 – 1611 are certainly notable. During those four years, Hudson left his mark on North America and the world, with such importance that three waterways are now named for him. His tireless quest to forge new trade routes culminated in him losing his life, but gaining posterity for all time. In 1607, Henry Hudson (whose age at that time is unknown) was hired by English traders who called themselves the Muscovy Company. The Muscovy Company did extensive trading with Asia, and were hampered by the amount of time it took to travel between these distant countries. Convinced that there was indeed a route that could save them both time and money, they hired the explorer, Henry Hudson. Hudson’s job then was to find a northern waterway route from England to Asia. It was widely assumed at that time that Asia could actually be reached by sailing north, although geographers were not sure of the exact route, and whether Hudson should veer northeast, northwest, or due north. It was believed that once he found and reported back the correct route, trade would be greatly eased between England and the Orient. (Unbeknownst to the explorer was the fact that the North Pole would forever hamper all of their best thought out plans.)
