Introduction:
Who was Henry Hudson Anyway? And What Happened to Him?
Imagine stumbling onto the beauty of the Hudson Valley by accident! Englishman Henry Hudson was looking for a quick passage to China as he sailed along America's north Atlantic coast in 1609. Hudson thought he found what he was looking for when he entered New York Bay and what is now the river named for him. He and his crew of 18-20 men, sailing on a ship called the Half Moon, traveled about 150 miles up the river near what is now Albany before realizing it would not lead them to their destination of choice. What he did first find was the Hudson River of modern day New York.
The Task: You and your team of learners have been appointed by the Queen and King to accompany Mr. Hudson on his journey. Your task will be to gather information about your adventure. You will need to report back to a committee to determine if this voyage was a success. Be prepared to tell about Henry Hudson, his ship, navigation, what places you visited with Mr. Hudson, what you accomplished, and any hardships. In addition, you will travel, in time, to the present day. You will need to tell how Henry Hudson is remembered. In addition, we all know that a river was named after him. What is that river like today?

The Discoverer
Henry Hudson made four journeys that are recorded in the history books, and is credited as the European discoverer of Hudson Bay. He is also remembered for the sad end of his last voyage. Hudson's first three journeys in 1605, 1608 and 1609 were to find a short route to Asia by going over the North Pole. He travelled farther north than any European explorer had gone before, but he was stopped by the ice and had to go back. In 1610, he decided to try to find the Northwest Passage . By June, Hudson discovered a strait and that led to a large body of water. He thought he was close to China and went south. In reality, he had passed through what is now called Hudson Strait and gone into Hudson Bay.

Engaged (1609) for the same purpose by the Dutch East India Company, he sailed in the Half Moon to Spitsbergen, where extreme ice and cold brought his crew near mutiny. Hudson, determined not to lose his reputation as an explorer, disregarded his instructions and sailed westward hoping to find the Northwest Passage . He entered Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, and later New York Bay. He was the first European to ascend (1609) the Hudson River (named for him), nearly to present-day Albany. His voyage gave the Dutch their claim to the region. His fourth expedition (1610), financed by English adventurers, started from England. Again he sailed westward, hoping to find the Northwest Passage. Between Greenland and Labrador he entered Hudson Strait and by it reached Hudson Bay. After weeks of exploration, he was forced by ice to winter there. By the next summer (1611) his starved and diseased crew mutinied and set Hudson, with his son and seven men, adrift in a small boat, without food or water. He was never seen again. His discoveries, however, gave England its claim to the Hudson Bay region.

How did the Hudson River in New York and New Jersey get its name? On the misty morning of September 3, 1609, explorer Henry Hudson and his crew aboard the Half Moon sailed into the majestic river off the Atlantic coast by chance. Strong head winds and storms forced them to abandon the northeast voyage they had been assigned. Rather than return to Holland with nothing to report, the crew voted to look for the Northwest Passage, a legendary waterway that would carry a ship all the way from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. They passed by the island we know today as Manhattan and sailed up the river.

Hudson was not the first European explorer to discover this river. The Florentine navigator Giovanni da Verrazano discovered the Hudson in 1524. But Henry Hudson traveled the river much farther than its previous explorer. After 150 miles, the Half Moon did not reach the Pacific, but it did reach what would later become Albany, New York. There, they turned around. But as a result of Hudson's exploration, the river bears his name today. Hudson was a headstrong but courageous commander. Though he often mismanaged his crews by playing favorites or letting morale suffer, he was a competent navigator. He undertook four dangerous voyages, and made huge contributions to geographical knowledge. His exploration of the Hudson River led to Dutch colonization of the area.

He was an explorer for four years. In the spring of 1611, Henry Hudson died on one of his ships, the Half Moon. Henry Hudson had two main influences. His grandfather, who started the Moscovy Trading Company, was probably a great influence and inspiration to him. But the most inspiring of all was his son who joined him in all his wonderful journeys. Henry had a dream to try and find a sea route to China and Japan going through the North Pole. Before they left, they gathered food, fresh water, sleeping gear, clothes, navigation supplies, and an extra side boat. Henry Hudson voyaged around New York harbor. His crew thought he was insane for not turning back in deadly, icy waters. He navigated by compass mostly. He traveled by land, and has used several different ships. Henry Hudson was a smart and daring explorer, Coming across the Atlantic Ocean and up into the Arctic Ocean, Henry Hudson faced many perils. As the first person to explore so far north he had no maps to follow On his first voyage, he sailed northeast and followed the coast of Greenland and reach Spitsbergan. Unfortunately, huge ice floes sent him back to England. After the Moscovy Company lost interest, Henry Hudson joined up with the Dutch East Indian Company. On his last voyage, his crew put him, his son and seven crew members in a boat to starve.

    - Thomas A. Janvier, biographer of Henry Hudson. The illustration featured here comes from the (presumably uncritical) Cyclopaedia of Universal History, 1885 Henry Hudson (place and date of birth are unknown, but September 12 seems likely; presumed to have died in ) was an English sea explorer and navigator. In , Hudson set sail on the Hopewell to find a northeast passage to Asia through the Arctic Ocean via the North Pole . The voyage was paid for by the Moscovy Company , one of a small number of corporations given Royal Charters . In June he reached the eastern shore of Greenland and started northward, mapping as they went. On the 20th they started out for Svalbard , eventually reaching an island on the northern end of the group on the 17th of July. At this point the ship was only 577 nautical miles from the pole, but it was clear there is no way to go further due to the ice and he decided to return to England on the 31st. On the return voyage Hudson discovered what is now known as Jan Mayen Island before reaching home in September.

By Angelica L. Why do some people go on long, risky journeys just to discover something new? Some great explorers were inspired by the talk of riches. By contrast, others just loved adventure and seeing unfamiliar places. One such explorer is known for his great passion for sailing. This explorer is well known by people everywhere as Henry Hudson. Hudson's early life is a little mysterious, but it is agreed that he was born in the 1570s, possibly in Hodderson, Hertfordshire, England. As a young man, he may have worked in London at the Muscovy Company, a trading firm in which his family had shares. He married a woman named Katherine and had three sons, John, Richard, and Oliver. It is possible that Hudson fought with the English against the Spanish Armada in 1588. Some historians believe that he had sailed to the Mediterranean, the North Sea, and Africa in order to get gold, ivory, and spices in exchange for steel axes. Whatever the case, he was an experienced sailor by the time he went on the first of his four important voyages of discovery. The first of these trips was organized by the Muscovy Company in 1607. Hudson's job was to find a northwest passage that would allow Europeans to travel to China and India by way of the North Pole. At the time it was not known that this area is blocked by ice. Many explorers were interested in finding such a route by sailing northwest, northeast, or just north. Hudson was chosen as captain of the ship Hopewell, and with a crew of ten and his son John, he set out from England. The ship got as far as Greenland and then the Spitzbergen Islands, which lie about 700 miles from the North Pole. This was the farthest north that any European had ever traveled. Hudson wanted to keep going, but there was too much ice. He had to turn around and go back to England.

Poughkeepsie Journal Henry Hudson English explorer and sea captain Henry Hudson is credited with the first European exploration and navigation of the Hudson River. Which European explorer actually discovered it is a matter of conjecture. It could have been John Cabot or Giovanni da Verrazzano. But Hudson the man and Hudson the river are indelibly linked. His first voyage, under the tutelage of an English trading firm called the Muscovy Co., took him along the coast of Greenland, near Spitsbergen, about 700 miles south of the North Pole. Ice floes forced his ship, Hopewell, which carried a crew of 10 men and his young son, John, to return home. His report of numerous whale sightings led to English and Dutch whaling near Spitsbergen. A second voyage in 1608 also was foiled by the ice. In 1609, Hudson was hired by the Dutch East India Co. Aboard the Half Moon, with a crew of about 20, Hudson again set out, sailing northeast to find the northern passage. But an unhappy crew led Hudson to change course, and he sailed for North America. He traveled as far south as North Carolina, then headed north again, exploring Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay.
