41. Review Of Henry Hudson: Arctic Explorer And North American Adventurer

Books Stories Henry Hudson: Arctic Explorer and North American Adventurer Book 482 Uncategorized Our Angry Earth Why Are Whales Vanishing? This is the third and final book in the third and final series authored by Asimov of Gareth-Stevens—and there’s good reason to believe that his work on it was minimal and that Elizabeth Kaplan, his ostensible co-author, actually wrote the whole thing. (If that turns out to be the case, this book will end up getting removed from my list.) It’s not bad, really—about as good and as interesting as the earlier books, Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan . However, not being myself from the East Coast, Hudson is an inherently less interesting explorer than he might be to someone who lives on the river named after him. And unfortunately the book makes him out as being incredibly brave and incredibly stupid, which tends to detract from it. Still, it’s a solid piece of work and I'd gladly hand it to a grade school child who needed to know something about Hudson. John H. Jenkins

Henry Hudson (Watts Library) What I Learned Section 1 Answer the Following Questions:
1. What year was the main overland trade route from Europe to Asia closed?

1453. Trade with Asia was very important to the Europeans. They traded for valuable silk, metals, and spices. Metals were used by the Europeans for money. Spices such as cloves, cinnamon, and cardamom were used to make food more edible. Many of the spices came from the Moluccas Islands, located halfway between the Philippines and Australia. The Europeans called the Moluccas Island the Spice Islands because so many spices could be found there. The main overland trade route from Europe to Asia went through Constantinople. In 1453, the Ottoman captured Constantinople and closed the trade route. The Europeans had to find a new route if they were to continue trading with Asia. In 1499, Vasco da Gama discovered a new trade route around the tip of Africa. This and other trade routes around Africa were opened. However, they were controlled by Spain and Portugal. England and other European countries looked to the northern seas to find a trade route to Asia. John Davis made three voyages between Greenland and Canada. Although Davis never found a passage, he made important discoveries to help sailors who followed him. Some historians believe Henry Hudson was a member of Davis' crew on one of his voyages.

HENRY HUDSON Explorer Henry Hudson was the English navigator who crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1609 and became the first European to sail up what is now the Hudson River in New York. Little is known about Hudson's early life. In 1607 he was hired by the English Muscovy Company to lead the ship Hopewell on an expedition north of the European continent, in an effort to discover a northeastern sea passage to the spice islands of the South Pacific. He reached Greenland and Spitzbergen before his path was blocked by ice. On his second voyage, a year later, he made it as far as the archipelago of Novaya Zemlya in the Arctic Ocean. Still convinced that there might be a separate passage to the northeast, the merchants of the Dutch East India Company hired Hudson in 1609 to lead an expedition on the ship Halve Maen Half Moon in English). Hudson had other ideas, however, and sailed in the other direction, across the Atlantic to North America. He explored along the coast of Nova Scotia and down to what is now New York Harbor, sailing up the Hudson River as far north as Albany. Hudson's fourth voyage, aboard Discovery (1610-11), was financed by English merchants seeking the Northwest Passage across America to the Far East. He made it as far as Hudson's Bay before mutineers put him and eight others (including his son) adrift on a small boat in the bay in June of 1611. Although no record exists of their fate, the men were already sick and without provisions, and it is assumed Hudson and the others did not survive.

HENRY HUDSON
HUDSON, HENRY Next year Hudson was again sent by the Muscovy Company to open a passage to China, this time by the north-east route between Spitzbergen and Novaya Zemlya, which had been attempted by his predecessors and especially by the Dutch navigator William Barents. This voyage lasted from the 22nd of April to the 26th of August ,6o8. He raked the Barents Sea in vain between 75 30 NW. and 71 15 S.E. for an opening through the ice, and on the 6th of July, voide of hope of-a north-east passage (except by the Waygats, for which I was nOt fitted to trie or prove), he resolved to sail to the north-west, and if time and means permitted to run a hundred leagues up Lumleys Inlet (Frobisher Strait) or Daviss overf all (Hudson Strait). But his voyage being delayed by contrary winds he was finally compelled to return without accomplishing his wish. The failure of this second attempt satisfied the Muscovy Company, which thenceforward directed all its energies to the profitable Spitzbergen trade. Although it is certain that the four great geographical landmarks which to-day serve to keep Hudsons memory alive, namely the Hudson Bay, Strait, Territory and River, had repeatedly been visited and even drawn on maps and charts before he set out on his voyages, yet he deserves to take a very high rank among northern navigators for the mere extent of his discoveries and the success with which he pushed them beyond the limits of his predecessors. The rich fisheries of Spitzbergen and the fur industry of the Hudson Bay Territory were the immediate fruit of his labors.

Henry Hudson: Lost Leadership
Don C. Barnett Introduction Use the story of Arctic explorer Henry Hudson to illustrate the importance of leadership. First , locate the river, strait, and bay explored by Hudson's expeditions. Second , brainstorm ideas about the qualities of effective leadership. These should include qualities of fairness, communication, and listening to the wishes of others. Now let's look at the story of Henry Hudson. Hudson is the river that is the life-line of the densely populated industrial American north-east and delta of the largest city in the U.S.A. Hudson is the strait between Frobisher Bay and northern Quebec, as well as the name of the biggest bay in Canada. All are named after Henry Hudson, the Arctic explorer who died in the icy waters of the North. Hudson's dogmatic leadership style combined with the rough and unscrupulous men working on sailing ships in the 1600's was a mix of dynamite and gasoline, waiting only for a spark to ignite an explosion. The seeds of trouble were laid before Henry Hudson left England in 1610 on the ship The Discovery . Hudson's first mate, Robert Juet, had travelled and quarrelled with Hudson on previous voyages. Hudson made a fatal error in having Juet in his crew.

(?-1611), English explorer. Hudson explored North America in an unsuccessful search for the Northwest Passage. During the third of his four voyages, he sailed up the Hudson River to the present-day site of Albany and as far south as North Carolina. Set adrift by his mutinous crew, he was left to die and never seen again.

Henry Hudson
Henry Hudson, the English navigator, failed in his great quest to find an all-water route to the East, but was rewarded for his efforts by having a number of prominent North American geographic features named in his honor. Little is known of Hudson’s early life, but he apparently gained enough seafaring experience to be hired by large maritime concerns. One of these, the Muscovy Company of England, engaged Hudson in 1607 to lead an expedition in search of a northeast passage. The venture was blocked by ice and strong winds; a second attempt the following year encountered the same conditions. In 1609, Hudson was chosen by the Dutch East India Company to lead their effort to discover a water passage to the east. Hudson sailed from Amsterdam with a largely Dutch crew aboard the Half Moon . Like the earlier efforts, the venture encountered severe weather, which prompted stirrings of mutiny among the crew. At this critical juncture, Hudson decided to violate the orders from his sponsors. Hudson, like many navigators of his era, had heard rumors about all-water passages to the west — the opposite direction from that mandated in his instructions. One popular story stemmed from a voyage taken by George Weymouth in 1602, in which the explorer speculated about the existence of a passage through northern North America to the Pacific Ocean. A somewhat different account came from the explorations of
