If you are asked to use APA format for a paper, the book to consult is the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition) , which the American Psychological Association has recently updated. Citing electronic sources was a major part of this update, as these types of sources are increasingly common in research within the social sciences. Below, you will find some examples of these updated citation styles. Using Modern Language Association (MLA) Format
Brought to you by the Purdue University Online Writing Lab MLA style also specifies guidelines for formatting manuscripts and using the English language in writing and also provides a writers with a system for cross-referencing their sourcesfrom their parenthetical references to their works cited page. This cross-referencing system allows readers to locate the publication information of source material. This is of great value for researchers who may want to locate your sources for their own research projects. The proper use of MLA style also shows the credibility of writers; such writers show accountability to their source material. Most importantly, the use of MLA style can protect writers from accusations of plagiarismthe purposeful or accidental use of source material by other writers without giving appropriate credit. All guidelines for MLA style are in the MLA Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (2nd edition). If you are asked to use MLA format for a research paper, the book to consult is

Documenting your research When you write a research paper, it is important to keep accurate records of the resources you've consulted and of the ideas you've quoted or used from others. The Modern Language Association (MLA) has established guidelines and formats on how to credit the authors of the sources you use and clarify which ideas belong to you and which belong to other sources. Documenting your sources includes creating a list of works cited that provides acknowledgement of and detailed information about your sources. Generally, you document what you've used from each source by giving a short parenthetical reference within the text of your research paper. References in

About the Style Guide As a service to our University of Colorado clients and the entire university community, Publications and Creative Services has developed this University of Colorado at Boulder Style Guide. Adhering to these guidelines is not mandatory; we realize that there are valid reasons for diverging from them in specific cases. Our goal was to produce a reference document that would help campus communicators adopt a style that is consistent and appropriate for university use, especially when they write for an external audience. In the final analysis, good writing "style" is determined not by consistently following rules but by making appropriate rhetorical choices for a given purpose and audience. We assume some mastery of that writing skill and offer this style guide as a way to fine tune your writing for CU. What This Style Guide Is Not This guide is not intended to replace other writing style guides used for specific purposes or publications. Nor is it intended for use by students or faculty writing academic papers. Neither is this guide intended to be comprehensive, although we have tried to include some of the most frequently troublesome issues. For that reason, we have not included field-specific style issues, such as how to present mathematical equations in print. Specialists within departments are better authorities on such matters. We also have omitted lengthy and detailed explanations of most grammatical rules; instead, we have included a list of additional

It may also be more convenient for people on slow Internet connections to load this page, and do all their waiting at once, rather than parceling it out. This page is very large, more than 150K. It also pulls in about 200K of images. With a 14.4 modem, it will take at least 5 minutes to load. Intro

This is a cookbook for helping people create better web pages. The guidelines presented here represent the opinions and preferences of a small group of people within Sun who have created some web pages, and have looked at many more. We've drawn from our own observations, opinions and judgements about what makes web pages better or worse, as well as extrapolating from the existing body of usability and user interface design literature. Take everything here with a proverbial "grain of salt." You may strongly agree with some of the suggestions, and others may provoke vehement dissent. I welcome your comments , positive or otherwise. If you discover particularly illustrative examples for any of the guidelines here, drop me a note. I'll try to use them in future revisions.

Introduction
The Modern Language Association (MLA) publishes a style manual used primarily by scholars in literature and the humanities. The most recent edition is MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 4 th Edition, by Joseph Gibaldi, Modern Language Association of America, 1995. For more complete information on MLA documentation, please consult this manual. Copies are available at the Writing Center, in the Rensselaer Library, and for purchase in the Rensselaer Bookstore. Sources are acknowledged in two locations in your document: a "Works Cited" page and In-Text Citations. The "Works Cited" Page
All sources you use must be listed alphabetically at the end of your document on a page titled "Work Cited," which is centered on the page at the top of the document. The listing begins two lines down from this title; each citation is single spaced, but a double space is used to separated citations, thus: Works Cited
Book Title (underlined or italicized). City of publication: Publishers

by Melvin E. Page, (pagem@etsuarts.east-tenn-st.edu) for H-AFRICA (h-africa@msu.edu), Humanities-on-Line and History Department, East Tennessee State University
The following suggestions for citations of Internet sources in history and the historically based humanities are derived from the essential principles of academic citation in Kate L. Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, 5th ed. (Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1987). I have also draw upon suggestions from some of the works listed below. The guide has been improved by the the students of my Historical Methods classes at East Tennessee State University and my fellow H-AFRICA editors whom I thank for their assistance. Since the Internet is an evolving institution, this guide is not intended to be definitive. Corrections, additions, comments, suggestions, and criticisms are therefore welcome. Please address them to the author at: pagem@etsuarts.east-tenn-st.edu When the need for revisions and updates become apparent, new versions of the guide will be issued.

The mystery of the comma, revealed. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS GUIDE TO PUNCTUATION By Rene J. Cappon “Punctuation in skilled hands is a remarkably subtle system of signals, signs, symbols and winks that keeps readers on the smoothest road,” writes Rene J. Cappon in “The Associated Press Guide to Punctuation.” A stickler for consistency, clarity and correct usage, Cappon has separate chapters dedicated to the various punctuation symbols — from the dash and the semicolon, to the hyphen and the ever-elusive comma. This easy-to-use guide, from the author of AP's "Guide to News Writing," is an invaluable source for information on one of the most important aspects of clear and precise writing.

Citing Sources
All sources should be cited in a bibliography or reference list and in the body of the text of a research paper. Citations give credit to the the author as well as enable other researchers (or your instructor) to locate the cited item. See the examples in this article on Plagiarism by Earle Babbie if you are unclear on what needs to be cited or consult your instructor. A general rule of thumb is to cite all works that you consult. The links below are meant as a guide in creating your reference list or bibliography. For definitive guidance on how to cite your sources you should consult the print manual or the organization's on-line guide. From Binghamton University Libraries: From Purdue University Online Writing Lab: For the most complete information on how to cite sources, consult the print manuals:

http://www.webstyleguide.com/site/
SITE DESIGN
In architecture as in all other operative arts, the end must direct the operation. The end is to build well. Well building hath three conditions. Commodity, firmness, and delight.
The Elements of Architecture THE DESIGN OF THE SITE will determine its organizational framework. At this stage you will make the tactical design decisions about what your audience wants from you, what you wish to say, and how to arrange the content to best meet your audience's needs. Although people will notice the graphic design of your Web pages right away, the overall organization of the site will have the greatest impact on their experience. The fundamental organizing principle in Web site design is meeting users' needs. Ask yourself what your audience wants, and center your site design on their needs. Many organizations and businesses make the mistake of using their Web sites primarily to describe their administrative organization, and only secondarily do they offer the services, products, and information the average user is seeking. Most readers won't care how your company or department is organized and will be put off if such inside information is all your site appears to offer. Talk to the people who make up your target audience, put yourself in their shoes, and make the items and services they want the most prominent items on the home page.
