are welcome.
A or An
Use an in place of a when it precedes a vowel sound , not just a vowel. That means it's " an honor" (the h is silent), but " a UFO" (because it's pronounced yoo eff oh ). This confuses people most often with acronyms and other abbreviations: some people think it's wrong to use "an" in front of an abbreviation (like "MRI") because "an" can only go before vowels. Poppycock: the sound is what matters. It's " an MRI," assuming you pronounce it "em ar eye."
The Above, The Following.
Lists are common in some sorts of writing, introduced by the following and referred to by the above . But you can often make a sentence clearer and punchier with simple pronouns : instead of the above topics , try these topics
Absent.
There's nothing wrong with absent as an adjective ("He was absent three days last week"; "Everyone recognized her comment as an insult directed at her absent coworker"). And though it's not very common these days, absent can also be a verb meaning "to keep someone away," as in

    Introduction
Internet and electronic information, with no print equivalents, presents new challenges to scholars. Increasingly information is being published only in electronic formats, and questions about how to cite these sources in academic papers have become frequent at library reference desks. This guide is written for students at the University of Alberta and is not meant to be definitive. Comments are very welcome.

It has not been updated to discuss recent developments in HTML ., and is out of date in many places, except for the addition of a few new pages, with given dates.

It has been prepared in the light of comments by readers, and many demands by providers of online documentation. Some of the points made may be influenced by personal preference, and some may be common sense, but a collection of points has been demanded, and so here it is. The guide is designed to be read sequentially, but feel free to depart from this. The sections are as follows:

    Adding a touch of style
Dave Raggett , 8th April 2002. This is a short guide to styling your Web pages. It will show you how to use W3C's Cascading Style Sheets language (CSS) as well as alternatives using HTML itself. The route will steer you clear of most of the problems caused by differences between different brands and versions of browsers. For style sheets to work, it is important that your markup be free of errors. A convenient way to automatically fix markup errors is to use the HTML Tidy utility. This also tidies the markup making it easier to read and easier to edit. I recommend you regularly run Tidy over any markup you are editing. Tidy is very effective at cleaning up markup created by authoring tools with sloppy habits. The following will teach you how to:
    • use the style element link to separate style sheets set page margins set left and right and first-line indents set the amount of whitespace above and below set the font type, style and size add borders and backgrounds set colors with named or numeric values add style for browsers that don't understand CSS
    Getting started
Let's start with setting the color of the text and the background. You can do this by using the STYLE element to set style properties for the document's tags:

Composing Good HTML (section 1 of 4)
This document attempts to address stylistic points of HTML composition, both at the document and the web level. It is available on the Web at http://www.ology.org/tilt/cgh/ (if you are reading this via a mirror, you may want to check the original to make sure you're seeing an up-to-date version). This document is neither finished, nor is it even all that current. It reflects my thinking during the summer of 1995, which is that last time that I had the luxury of spending three months thinking about these kinds of things. The web changes rapidly; in some ways this document is now hopelessly out of date. In other ways, though, it still retains some valuable insights (at least, in my humble opinion). You'll have to be the judge, as the reader, because I have neither the time nor the inclination these days to try to keep this document updated. This text is still largely the same text I wrote that summer, with occasional grammatical and spelling fixes. Caveat emptor! New: This is version 2.0.20 (the old version 1 is no longer available, as of Nov 17 1997). Now that

    http://www.bedfordstmartins.com/online/cite5.html
This chapter's guidelines for citing Internet sources are based on two sources: the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (2003) by Joseph Gibaldi. The MLA Handbook advises that you acknowledge sources "by keying brief parenthetical citations in your text to an alphabetical list of works that appears at the end of the paper" (142). Widely used by writers in literature, language studies, and other fields in the humanities, the MLA style of documentation allows writers to keep texts "as readable and as free of disruptions as possible" (143). The MLA Handbook provides information about the purposes of research; suggestions for choosing topics; recommendations for using libraries; guidance for composing outlines, drafts, notes, and bibliographies; and advice on spelling, punctuation, abbreviations, and other stylistic matters. It also presents a style for documenting sources and gives directions for citing print sources in the text and preparing a list of Works Cited. Thorough acquaintance with the MLA Handbook will, as its author promises, "help you become a writer whose work deserves serious consideration" (xv). This chapter follows the conventions of MLA citation style.
