http://standards.ieee.org/guides/style/
About this online version
Not all common elements of typography and formatting are supported by the current generation of web browsers and the hypertext markup language (HTML). Therefore, in this online version of the IEEE Standards Style Manual , design elements, such as superscripts and footnotes, are rendered in a manner inconsistent with IEEE Standards style. Be aware that in the HTML version all dashed lists are presented as bulleted lists and all paragraphs are formatted "ragged" rather than justified. Paradoxical as that may be, however, we hope that the online version will be a useful, informal resource for many Standards style issues. A PDF version of the 2005 IEEE Standards Style Manual can be downloaded at no cost by clicking the following link: 2005 IEEE Standards Style Manual (PDF version)

It is based on the 6th edition of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers published by the Modern Language Association in 2003. Copies are available at the Vanier Library Reference Desk, in the Webster Library Reference Collection and on 3-hour Reserve (Webster). The call number for the handbook is LB 2369 G53 2003. The MLA Handbook is generally used for academic writing in the humanities. The handbook itself covers many aspects of research writing including selecting a topic, evaluating sources, taking notes, plagiarism, the mechanics of writing, the format of the research paper as well as the way to cite sources. This guide provides basic explanations and examples for the most common types of citations used by students. For additional information and examples, refer to the

MLA STYLE GUIDE Note: All citations should be double-spaced. They are single spaced on this handout to save space. This guide uses italics instead of underlining, which is different than the examples given in the MLA Handbook, 6th ed. However, MLA, 6th ed, does note (p. 94) that you may use italics rather than underlining when typing titles but suggests that you check with your instructor to determine their preference. Introduction
Style manuals have evolved from early printers' manuals into tools for authors, editors, and students. They range from general style manuals to those intended for use within a specific discipline, or even within the pages of a single journal. Most style manuals contain much more than examples of footnotes and bibliographies. Advice on grammar and punctuation, tips on conducting research, and recommendations on the appearance of the finished paper are commonly found. Thus, the distinction between the style manual and the writing guide can be subtle. Included in the following list are all-purpose style manuals, specialized manuals, bibliographies which may be consulted in order to locate additional manuals, and several guides to term paper writing and manuscript preparation.

Citing Your Sources Chicago Manual of Style , 15th edition (Chicago: Chicago Univ. Press), p. 594 Why cite sources?
Whenever you quote or base your ideas on another person's work, you must document the source you used. Even when you do not quote directly from another work, if reading that source contributed to the ideas presented in your paper, you must give the authors proper credit. Citations allow readers to locate and further explore the sources you consulted, show the depth and scope of your research, and give credit to authors for their ideas. Citations provide evidence for your arguments and add credibility to your work by demonstrating that you have sought out and considered a variety of resources. In written academic work, citing sources is standard practice and shows that you are responding to this person, agreeing with that person, and adding something of your own. Think of documenting your sources as providing a trail for your reader to follow to see the research you performed and discover what led you to your original contribution. By following these guidelines, you avoid
