You've learned the basics. But web design is constantly evolving. So if you haven't mastered tables, forms, Cascading Style Sheets and a little bit of Javascript, you just won't be able to convince people that you know how to create a professional looking web page. Besides, most web pages these days do something. They don't just provide static information. They get information from the user, provide choices, sell things. Can you do all that without being a programmer? You sure can. And this course will show you how.

Intermediate HTML Design
Lists, Quotes and Sundry Tricks
So far, we've covered the basics of HTML. With this knowledge, you should be able to design some simple, but very effective, web documents. In the following sections, we'll cover other markups which will help you jazz up your efforts.
  • Eenie
  • Meanie
  • Miney
  • Mo
You would use the unordered list tag , or . Additionally, each item in the list would be preceded by a list item tag , or . So to make our list, we'd type the following:
And make sure you include the closing tag, , or you might really confuse the computer. Otherwise, these tags should give you a nice looking bulleted list.
Ordered Lists
Sometimes instead of an unordered list, you'll want to list some items that are numbered. The ordered list tag will create an ordered list that automatically includes the numbers. It's very similar to a tag, the only difference being in the opening and closing tags. Let's try this:
When you look at this on the Web, the list appears as
  • Eenie
  • Meanie
  • Miney
  • Mo Ordered list tags are really handy when you want to number your list and plan to add items to the list every now and then. This way, your list will remain numbered and you won't have to retype the numbers each time you make a change.

OH JEHOVA, quam ampla sunt opera Tua. - Carolus Linnaeus
at the beginning of Systema Naturae According to the theory of common descent, modern living organisms, with all their incredible differences, are the progeny of one single species in the distant past. In spite of the extensive variation of form and function among organisms, several fundamental criteria characterize all life. Some of the macroscopic properties that characterize all of life are (1) replication, (2) heritability (characteristics of descendents are correlated with those of ancestors), (3) catalysis, and (4) energy utilization (metabolism). At a very minimum, these four functions are required to generate a physical historical process that can be described by a phylogenetic tree.

    Java as an Intermediate Language
Jonathan C. Hardwick and Jay Sipelstein August 12, 1996 CMU-CS-96-161
    Abstract:
We present our experiences in using Java as an intermediate language for the high-level programming language N ESL . First, we describe the design and implementation of a system for translating V CODE the current intermediate language used by N ESL into Java. Second, we evaluate this translation by comparing the performance of the original V CODE implementation with several variants of the Java implementation. The translator was easy to build, and the generated Java code achieves reasonable performance when using a just-in-time compiler. We conclude that Java is attractive both as a compilation target for rapid prototyping of new programming languages and as a means of improving the portability of existing programming languages. This paper is also available as a compressed postscript file (98 k).

Prevention and Treatment of Acute Mountain Sickness

    References
By 37 BC, the ancient Chinese recognized a peculiar illness when they hiked the passes of what they later named the Little Headache and Great Headache mountains. The first westerner to describe mountain sickness was the Jesuit priest, Jose de Acosta, who accompanied the Spanish Conquistadors in Peru. Since then researchers have described the consequences of travel to high altitudes and named the syndrome acute mountain sickness (AMS). Acute mountain sickness is characterized by a constellation of symptoms. Headache is the main symptom. Nausea, vomiting, dyspnea (shortness of breath), and insomnia are other common symptoms. The traveler at altitude can also experience impaired cognition and balance. Onset of symptoms typically occurs within hours to three days after arrival at altitude. These symptoms tend to resolve after several days but can persist for up to two weeks. They can be the harbinger of the fatal conditions, high-altitude cerebral edema and high-altitude pulmonary edema. At intermediate altitudes, 1,500-3,000 meters, up to 25% of unacclimatized travelers may experience AMS. People with serious lung, heart and blood diseases are more likely to develop AMS. Healthy young adults who participate in vigorous activity upon arrival at altitude are also at great risk for AMS. Individuals with a prior history of AMS and who live at low elevations are especially susceptible. Those who travel rapidly to altitude, as is common with air travel, are also at greater risk for AMS.

    Schematic of
a Black Hole There is strong evidence for two types of black holes: stellar black holes with masses of a dozen or so Suns, and supermassive black holes with masses of many millions of Suns. Stellar black holes are formed as a natural consequence of the evolution of massive stars. The origin of supermassive black holes is a mystery. They are found only in the centers of galaxies. It is not known whether they formed in the initial collapse of the gas cloud that formed the galaxy, or from the gradual growth of a stellar mass black hole, or from the merger of a centrally located cluster of black holes, or by some other mechanism.

Peculiar outbursts of X-rays coming from a black hole have provided evidence that it has a mass of about 10,000 Suns, which would place it in a possible new class of black holes. The timing and regularity of these outbursts, observed with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, make the object one of the best candidates yet for a so-called intermediate-mass black hole. Scientists have strong evidence for the existence of stellar black holes that are about 10 times as massive as the Sun. They have also discovered that supermassive black holes with masses as large as billions of Suns exist in the centers of most galaxies. Recent evidence has suggested that a new class of black holes may exist between these extremes - intermediate-mass black holes with masses equal to thousands of Suns. Chandra X-ray Image of M74 "It is important to verify the existence of intermediate-mass black holes, because they would bridge the gap between stellar-mass black holes and supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies," said Jifeng Liu of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and lead author on a paper describing their discoveries that appeared in the March 1 issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters. "Our observations don't settle the debate, but the behavior of this object is strong evidence in favor of their existence."
