SEAS Computing and Networking Group
INTRODUCTION
This second session on the UNIX operating system, called Intermediate UNIX, assumes a basic working knowledge of simple UNIX commands and an understanding of the concepts discussed in a previous seminar, An Introduction To UNIX . In particular, an understanding of the "rooted tree" file layout and the basic file and directory handling commands are needed. The UNIX tools and facilities discussed in this document and tutorial are intended to help users to customize their working environment, simplify some complex tasks, and to do more sophisticated management of their files. An outside reference that may be of some interest on this subject material is "The UNIX Programming Environment" by Kernighan and Pike.
CONVENTIONS
Throughout this document the following conventions will be used: Text appearing in the Helvetica Normal and Bold fonts, such as this, is instruction and narrative. Text appearing in the Courier font such as -rw-rr 1 dela 4872 Nov 4 16:05 slides.txt represents text which the computer system prints.

II. Applying Attributes and Values to Tags A. Attributes (See HTML Guide No. IIa) Attributes are modifications to simple HTML tags that define what the tag does. Many tags have default attributes attributes that are in force when no attribute is explicitly written in the tag. 1. Changing the appearance of horizontal rules
The horizontal rule tag, , actually has several default attributes which, if explicitly spelled out, would look like this:
hr - tag
size, align, width - attributes
1, center, 100% - values
...and the horizontal rule would appear on a web page this way: Changing the value of an attribute in the horizontal rule tag changes the appearance of the horizontal rule.
For example, changing the value of the width attribute from 100% to 25% changes the length.
Note: You can pick and choose which default attributes you want to modify.

HTML Advanced Guide
The aim of the HTML Advanced Guide is to show how to fully exploit the features of HTML and how to optimise it for accessibility. Because the HTML Beginner's Guide and HTML Intermediate Guide take the standpoint of using the latest standard of HTML ( XHTML 1.0+), some aspects of this guide may be unfamiliar to a lot of people who haven't read through the Beginner's and Intermediate guides, which is why there is a Standards Recap page. In general though, the pages in this section assume that you know the ins and outs of HTML and want to exploit it to its full potential.
Contents
  • Standards Recap - Separating meaning from presentation, XHTML tags and attributes and accessibility overviews. Accessible Links - Making hypertext more accessible to users with disabilities. Mastering Text - Using the right tags for the right context. Mastering Tables - Column groups, headers and footers etc. etc. Accessible Forms - Making forms more accessible for users with disabilities.
