Botany/horticulture students, I beg for your attention!!!
Posted by My Page ) on Fri, Mar 18, 05 at 10:23 Hello and good morning! I am in a bit of a panic this morning, and need some answers! I have a post on the Professional topics forum that has gone unanswered, except for a very helpful email sent to me from a very busy nursery owner. My post is entitled "Pro Growers, two minutes of your time please". I know at this time of year, everyone is busy, so I thought I'd enlist the help of some students, or ANYONE who may know how to help. If someone would please read that post of mine and respond to that and another question I will post here, I would appreciate you greatly! Is this information correct? Will a plant, grown from seed, that begins to flower when it is only at the 3 or 4 leaf stage, not grow to the size it is expected to grow? Will my petunias that were sown at the end of January, and were transplanted 4 weeks later, but another 4 weeks later still only have 3 or 4 sets of leaves, grow to mature at the size they are intended to? My petunias are not dieing, they are just sitting there! Jeff, the nursery owner here who helped me, has the theory that the plants are simply developing roots at this stage. But still, after 4 weeks, shouldnt I have seen more significant leaf growth? I do hope that I am explaining myself clearly here! I appreciate anyone who takes the time to give their information.

HISTORY OF THE BIOLOGY GREENHOUSE FACILITIES
The following history is largely anecdotal and is far from complete. It was compiled by Bernie Rubinstein who owes a debt of gratitude to John Tristan. John's book, "A History of the Durfee Conservatory" and his files provided information about the early years of the university. I am also grateful to Ed Davis, Otto Stein, Seymour Shapiro, and Ronald Beckwith for their reminiscences. I encourage the readers of this short history to share any memories they might have that are related to the Botany/Biology greenhouse facility. The study of botany, and by extension, the greenhouses that are essential for botanical studies, has a long and distinguished history at the University of Massachusetts. The teaching of botany and botanical research has been a tradition at UMass since the first students enrolled in 1867. In fact, the president at that time (the third president, actually, but that's another story) was William S. Clark, who had been a Professor of Chemistry and Botany at Amherst college. Perhaps it is not surprising, then, with President Clark's interests and the fact that a knowledge of botany was considered essential for an educated person, that one of the first buildings constructed at the then Massachusetts Agricultural College was the Durfee Conservatory. Named after trustee, Dr. Nathan Durfee, the new greenhouse was a showplace for its time. It was presided over by the Horticulture and Botany Department and contained an extensive plant and seed collection financed by Henry Hills, a wealthy hat manufacturer from Amherst.

    Internships
Internships lasting three to six months are available in the Centre for Economic Botany (CEB). We are currently involved in a wide range of research topics relating to useful plants, focusing on the United Kingdom and on the world's tropical arid and semi-arid regions. An internship here offers the opportunity to gain experience in aspects of economic botany and ethnobotany relating to collections, taxonomy and information retrieval and dissemination. Internships do not involve fieldwork or, in CEB, work with living plants. Interns will also become familiar with the range of work carried out in a large botanic garden and the resources available. Summer 2002: interns from France, Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom Internships fall into three parts:
    • Some time, particularly in the first month, assisting with a range of routine tasks in the CEB, often aimed at making its collections better available to users or answering enquiries from outside Kew. These activities often involve databasing and online searching, and training is given in using many of the new information sources available.
    • Carrying out one or more small research or curation projects. Usually we have a particular project in mind; sometimes a project develops from the specific interests of the intern. The first month of an internship offers the opportunity to explore Kew's resources, and to develop a topic in consultation with Kew staff. Projects will always need to fit with the Centre's research and curation priorities, but these offer broad scope. Publication in printed or online form is strongly encouraged.

The New England Book of Fruits, Salem, 1847 Beginning November 14, the Garden presents America's Cornucopia , an exhibition of rare books and prints documenting the history of American botany and horticulture.
The story of our botanical heritage begins with the shift from European interest in the exotic New World to America's study and development of its own cornucopia after the Revolution. The exhibition contains published accounts of the European explorations, as well as early works that show American naturalists and scientists beginning to develop their own publication and collecting networks. In the early 19th century, the new democracy's strong sense of identity was manifested
in the United States Exploring Expedition and other scientific surveys. The botanical materials returned from these expeditions were organized by American botanists John Torrey and Asa Gray, whose standards for excellence and capacity for deductive analysis forced Europe's scientific elite to acknowledge American scientists as their equals.
