BOTANY
A number of related areas of study influenced the development of horticulture and agriculture, among them botany, botanic exploration, medical botany, dendrology, arboriculture and forestry. An expanding body of botanical knowledge and the introduction of new plant species have transformed what was cultivated in the garden and on the farm. Printed illustrations made possible the broad dissemination of botanical knowledge and stimulated further discoveries. Special Collections holds over five hundred titles published from the early sixteenth century to the twentieth relating to the botanical sciences. This botanical collection is particularly strong in American publications between 1810 and 1870 and British works from the early seventeenth to the late nineteenth centuries. The collection also has representative examples of European imprints, including French, German, Dutch, Italian, Belgian, and Swiss works. Of these titles over a hundred and fifty relate specifically to trees and forestry. Special Collections also holds over a hundred and fifty titles relating to materia medica and medical botany, including herbals. These collections provide a rich resource for studying the development of botanical science and its integral relationships with horticulture and agriculture. PRACTICAL HORTICULTURE AND GARDENING
The history of printed gardening literature spans nearly half a millennium. Although many advances have changed horticultural practice over the past 500 years, the practical advice offered by books on how to plant and care for the fruits, flowers, herbs, and vegetables in one's garden has had a relatively constant goal. Gardening manuals then as now were intended to serve as guides and instructors in practical horticulture, as one sixteenth-century title page proclaims, "for all those that delight in gardening." The fact that many early works on gardening were printed in the vernacular, rather than in Latin, indicates that they were intended as practical manuals for a non-scholarly audience. Indeed, in the dedication of Thomas Hill's posthumously published work, The Gardeners Labyrinth , the editor, Henry Dethick, writes almost apologetically of the book's "vulgar stile," but explains that he does not wish to "be deemed undutifull, and altogether ungratefull, if that I should omit any opportunitie, whereby I might encrease so rare a commoditie to my countrey."

A career in landscape
Landscape architects, managers and scientists create landscapes to make the area we live in a pleasant place. They may design public parks, reservoirs, the surroundings of public buildings or private gardens. What they design must fit in with the environment. Landscape architects have degrees or the equivalent. Technicians need at least good GCSEs.
Landscape Architects
The landscape architect is basically a designer, but in order to be able to produce a design, he or she must have an understanding of related topics such as civil engineering, surveying, geology, horticulture, earth-moving techniques, etc. back to top
Teamwork
If you have the idea that landscape architects work alone, then you are very much mistaken! They are usually part of a team which includes architects, civil engineers, town planners and the construction site foremen. A lot of time is spent at meetings and discussions and it is important to be able to work well with people at all levels. back to top
Indoors and out
Qualified landscape architects usually spend less than a quarter of their time outdoors. Most of their time is spent on desk-work and meetings. Landscape architects working in private practice are likely to spend quite a lot of time travelling, undertaking commissions around the country.

http://www.botany.com/scirpus.html
SCIRPUS (Scir'pus) DESCRIPTION: Scirpus, also known as Bulrush and Club Grass, is a group of decorative hardy and frost-tender Sedges. S. lacustris var. tabernaemontani 'Zebrinus', Zebra Rush, is a hardy kind that forms tufts of almost leafless stems banded horizontally with white. The tiny, reddish-brown flowers are produced in spikelets, in the summer. This plant grows up to 5 feet high. S. cyperinus, Woolgrass Bulrush, grows 3 to 5 feet high and produces an umbel of spikelets atop slender stems. The spikelets turn woolly when in fruit. S. cernuus is a tender kind found wild in the tropics. This plant has thin, drooping stems bearing small, light green, grass-like flower heads at their tips. This plant needs a minimum temperature of 45 degrees. POTTING: These plants grow well by the water. Grow them in 5-gallon containers filled with rich to clay soil and set in water that is up to 5 inches over the crown, in sun or partial shade. The tender kinds should be brought indoors for the winter and grown in pots filled with equal parts of loam and leaf mold. PROPAGATION: They can be divided in the spring and summer. Stratified seeds may also be sown.
