One of the unique opportunities at Top of the Mountain is to take in the scenery and atmosphere on horseback...
Mountain horseback trail rides provide an exceptional opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural habitat and to view and become part of the tranquil environment that is exclusive to high mountain landscapes.
Our guests have the option of venturing out with their own horses, exploring the magnificence of hundreds of acres along the Blue Mountains or riding our experienced trail horses on one of our many "Traditional Trail Rides".
Besides traditional trail rides, special morning and evening "Steak Fry Rides" are available. These rides are arranged for private individual groups and are designed to be a unique recreational dining experience.
The "Morning Breakfast Rides" will get your day off to a dazzling start with an exhilarating sunrise and lots of fresh air. As you ride to the top of the mountain, you can watch wildlife in their early morning grazing. By the time you reach our cow camp on top you will have worked up an appetite for a hardy breakfast of steak and eggs with sourdough biscuits . We will have you back to our barn by mid-morning so that you can continue your day, relaxing or enjoying any of the other Walla Walla Valley activities available to you. If someone in your party prefers not to ride, they can drive up with the cook and enjoy the mountain scenery while the rest of the party makes their way up the mountain.

Manuel F. Correllus State Forest Martha's Vineyard
Correllus State Forest occupies over 5,100 acres in the center of Martha's Vineyard. It was created in 1908 as the "Heath Hen Reserve," in an attempt to prevent the bird's extinction. Sadly, the last heath hen (an eastern subspecies of the prairie chicken) was seen in 1932. Today it is managed for passive recreation, mostly hiking and cycling on its 15 miles of bike paths. It is also the focus of one of the largest environmental restoration projects in the country. As part of a cooperative effort, the State Forest is now working to bring back the site's native ecosystem. The Great Plain that forms much of Martha's Vineyard supports an unusual concentration of rare species and extensive examples of several uncommon sand-plain communities, including grasslands, heathlands, barrens, and woodlands, dominated by mixed oak-pine. It was the abundance of woodlands and shrublands that enabled the heath hen to persist here long after they had died out elsewhere in the northeast. Although widespread land clearing began on Martha's Vineyard soon after European settlement in the 17th century, settlement and agriculture were focussed around the perimeter of the island, and the area that is now the state forest remained wooded with forest and scrublands for centuries.

A trip to picturesque Morrison-Rockwood State Park offers many memorable experiences. A large sign in the shape of Illinois, fashioned from angle iron by a blacksmith, greets visitors at the entrance. Once inside, choose from a variety of recreational opportunities. Beautiful Lake Carlton, a stream-fed reservoir, features an abundance of ducks and geese, and is considered a prime location for fishing. Or, plan a family outing at the Lakeview picnic area, or just do some bird watching among the hickory, ash, oak and walnut trees. History The Morrison-Rockwood State Park is comprised of 1,164 acres, located north of Morrison in Whiteside County. It was established in 1971 and officially opened for "day use only" that same year. The park is named for the city of Morrison and a combination of nearby Rock Creek and the heavily wooded park area Rockwood. Lake Carlton, a focal point of the park, is a watershed impoundment which was constructed in 1969 by building a 38-foot high, 1,800-foot long earthen dam across a stream. The lake was named in memory of L. Carlton Anderson, a local citizen who actively promoted the park and was an important civic and conservation leader. Improvements have continued to be made in the conservation area, making it one of the most popular recreation spots in northern Illinois.

Bald Eagle Days
Family Fishing Fair Interpretive Program ... Visitor Center
A nature-lover's paradise, this 8,000-acre park is famous for the exceptional beauty of its fall colors and for its bald eagles during the winter. In addition to enjoying the spectacular view of the Illinois River and its backwaters from several points atop the bluffs, visitors can take advantage of a variety of year-round recreational opportunities, including horseback riding, camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, and boating. Pere Marquette's Visitor Center, opened in October 1997, welcomes you with a three-dimensional map of the park, a 300-gallon aquarium, and wealth of other displays and exhibits concerning the Illinois River, wildlife habitat, local history, and geology. History The history of Pere Marquette State Park centers around that of the Illinois River. The forces that formed the river can be traced to ancient glaciers that pushed their way down over most of Illinois, but stopped just short of the park land. In the path of the glaciers and their meltwaters, a rich network of streams and rivers were formed, and tons of soil and bedrock were ground to dust which rose and blew up against the hillsides. These ancient layers of wind-blown soil, called Loess (pronounced "less") can be seen along the roads and trails of Pere Marquette.
