HERBERT HOOVER U.S. President Herbert Clark Hoover was a successful mining businessman before turning to political administration. A Republican, he defeated Democrat Alfred E. Smith in the presidential election of 1928. The stock market crash of 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression overwhelmed his presidency. In spite of a wide variety of successful reforms, Hoover was held accountable for the dire economic situation and was badly defeated in his bid for a second term by Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt

Herbert Hoover
US President - 1929-33 Courtesy of the Library of Congress Son of a Quaker blacksmith, Herbert Clark Hoover brought to the Presidency an unparalleled reputation for public service as an engineer, administrator, and humanitarian. Born in an Iowa village in 1874, he grew up in Oregon. He enrolled at Stanford University when it opened in 1891, graduating as a mining engineer. He married his Stanford sweetheart, Lou Henry, and they went to China, where he worked for a private corporation as China's leading engineer. In June 1900 the Boxer Rebellion caught the Hoovers in Tientsin. For almost a month the settlement was under heavy fire. While his wife worked in the hospitals, Hoover directed the building of barricades, and once risked his life rescuing Chinese children. One week before Hoover celebrated his 40th birthday in London, Germany declared war on France, and the American Consul General asked his help in getting stranded tourists home. In six weeks his committee helped 120,000 Americans return to the United States. Next Hoover turned to a far more difficult task, to feed Belgium, which had been overrun by the German army.

He married his Stanford sweetheart, Lou Henry, and they went to China, where he worked for a private corporation as China's leading engineer. While his wife worked in the hospitals, Hoover directed the building of barricades, and once risked his life rescuing Chinese children.

In six weeks his committee helped 120,000 Americans return to the United States. Next Hoover turned to a far more difficult task, to feed Belgium, which had been overrun by the German army. After the United States entered the war, President Wilson appointed Hoover head of the Food Administration. He succeeded in cutting consumption of foods needed overseas and avoided rationing at home, yet kept the Allies fed.

(b. Aug. 10, 1874, West Branch, Iowa, U.S.d. Oct. 20, 1964, New York, N.Y.), 31st president of the United States (1929-33), whose humanitarian image, earned as chief Allied relief administrator during World War I, was tarnished when his Republican administration was accused of failing policies during the Great Depression Orphaned before he was nine, Hoover was reared by an uncle in Oregon. He graduated as a mining engineer in Stanford University's first class (1895) and gained broad experience during the next 18 years as administrative engineer on industrial projects on four continents. Caught in China during the Boxer Rebellion (June 1900), Hoover was active in directing relief work for foreigners. In London at the outbreak of World War I (1914), he was made head of Allied relief operations and later chairman of the Commission for Relief in Belgium. With the U.S. entry into the war (April 1917), Hoover was appointed national food administrator to stimulate production and conserve supplies. In a 12-month period of 1918-19, his food administration furnished 18,500,000 tons of food to the Allies and to famine areas of Europe. His operations spread over 30 European countries and distributed $100,000,000 worth of aid. Later, he headed Mississippi flood-relief activities (1927) and also participated in post-World War II famine-relief work in Europe. Appointed secretary of commerce in 1921, Hoover undertook the reorganization of the department, in addition to organizing new divisions to cover radiobroadcasting, commercial aviation, better housing, and greater highway safety. His endeavours as chairman of the Colorado River Commission and of the St. Lawrence Waterways Commission culminated in the construction of Hoover Dam and the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Herbert Clark Hoover
31st President
Hoover was born in West Branch, Iowa on August 10, 1874. He was the first President born in Iowa. He was a Quaker. In 1922, Hoover, then Commerce Secretary, participated in the first successful long-distance television demonstration in New York. He was the first president to have a telephone right on his desk. Hoover required White House servants to be "invisible." Whenever he or the first lady appeared, the servants would jump into the nearest closet to avoid being seen. Hoover was one of two Presidents who did not accept a salary for being President. When Hoover invited the black wife of a congressman to the White House for tea, he was officially denounced by the state legislature of Texas. Charles Curtis, Hoover's vice president, was the only nonwhite person to be elected vice president of the U.S. He was a Kaw Indian.
When the Hoovers wanted to speak privately while in the presence of White House guests, they spoke Chinese. His son had 2 pet alligators that would sometimes wander around the White House.

HERBERT CLARK HOOVER: A Biographical Sketch
An Iowa Boyhood
Jesse Hoover moved from Ohio with his father Eli in 1854. They traveled by river boat and covered wagon to a farm outside West Branch, Iowa, a small town founded by Quakers. In 1870, Jesse, now the town blacksmith, married Hulda Minthorn, a teacher from Ontario, Canada. The Hoovers began a family in a small cottage by the Wapsinonoc Creek. Their first son Theodore (Tad, 1871) was followed on August 10, 1874 by another boy, Herbert Clark Hoover (Bert). On the occasion of his son's birth Jesse went through town declaring, "We have another General Grant in our house." Herbert's birth was followed in 1876 by the birth of a sister, Mary (May). The Hoover children spent their early years growing up in West Branch, Iowa. West Branch provided both joys and hazards of life. The children could hike, explore, and swim as well as hunt for fossils and agate in the glacial gravel along the railroad tracks. Their Quaker upbringing forbade the Hoover boys from carrying a gun, so they learned to hunt for rabbit and prairie chickens with bow and arrow. They learned these skills from young Indian boys who were attending a local government training school. Willow poles, butcher string lines and hooks that cost a penny apiece provided Herbert Hoover with sunfish and catfish. There was also Cook's Hill for sledding on home-made sleds.

Information on the accomplishments in the Life of Herbert C. Hoover, former president of the U.S.
Abraham Lincoln is often admired as being the man who was born in a log cabin, but through hard work and overcoming many adversities he arose to become President of the United States. The same can be said about Herbert Hoover, yet most people seem to remember is that he was President when the depression hit. And most of the blame was put on his shoulders. Even today when the economy is on a downswing you will here people say, " Well the Hoover days are upon us again." If one takes a look into the life of Hoover they will find a man who knew poverty, sorrow, and the value of hard work. Herbert Hoover was born in 1874 to poor Quaker family in Cedar County Iowa. He was the second child in a family of three children. By the time he was eleven both parents had died. The three Hoover children (older brother and younger sister) were separated and lived among various relatives. For the first few months Hoover lived with and uncle and aunt, who owned a farm. On the farm young Hoover did his share of the work on the farm. He cleaned out the barn, milked the cows and even work in the potato fields. An uncle in Oregon, who had just lost his son, decided he wanted the orphan Hoover to come live with him. So Hoover spent the remainder of his childhood in Oregon, where he received his basic education. He proved to be a very bright student.
