Jewish Contributions to Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Jewish Community Today
Commercial ties in South China brought Jewish merchants to the port of Hong Kong for centuries, but a real Jewish presence did not arrive until 1842, when Hong Kong became a British Crown Colony. The Sassoon family, a wealthy Sephardic dynasty whose mercantile empire extended across Asia, and the Kadoorie family, another prominent Sephardic dynasty, moved their business to Hong Kong in 1842. They procured mostly Jewish employees, mainly of Baghdadi origin, to encourage Jewish population growth. Fifteen years later, in 1857, the Hong Kong Jewish community was formally established. The Ohel Leah Synagogue, built by Sir Jacob Sassoon, opened in 1901, and the Jewish Club, built by the Kadoorie family, also opened during the early 1900s. The Jewish population, which had totaled 60 Sephardim in 1882, grew to 100 in 1921 (mostly Sephardim), and 250 in 1954 (half Sephardim and half Ashkenazim ). Growth then slowed, and the population numbered only 230 in 1959, and 200 in 1968, (70 Sephardim and 130 Ashkenazim).

History
World Guiding Origin The Boy Scout Movement was officially founded in 1908. In 1909, a Boy Scout rally was held at Crystal Palace in London, and Baden-Powell was taken aback when a number of girls attended, proclaiming themselves to be girl Scouts. Baden-Powell invited his sister, Agnes, as the girls' leader and chose the name Girl Guides after the famous corps of guides in India who were "distinguished for their general handiness & resourcefulness under difficulties, and their keenness & courage". Baden-Powell felt that the Movement for girls should be run by women, so in 1910 he asked his elderly sister Agnes to undertake the work of adapting his book of Scouting for Boys, for use with girls. That year the Guide Movement was formally founded, with the establishment of the Girl Guides Association. In 1910, Baden-Powell, now Sir Robert Baden-Powell, retired from his army career and devoted himself to Scouting and to the beginning of Guiding. He attended camps, rallies and jamborees all over the world, and it was during a world tour in 1912 that he met Olave Soames, his future wife. After a brief courtship, the couple were engaged and married that same year.

Chronology
Hong Kong fulfilled multiple roles in the first half-century or so after it became a British colony in 1842. During that period, Hong Kong occupied the front line in the development of Chinese nationalism; it served as a major conduit for Chinese emigration; and it offered many Chinese their first exposure to both good and bad aspects of "the West." (see note 1) Under a Joint Declaration made in 1984 between Britain and China, in which Britain acknowledged Hong Kong's dependence on the mainland for such vital resources as drinking water, the entire colonyHong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territoriesreverts to China upon the expiration of the lease on the New Territories at midnight on 30 June 1997. Britain and China fought the Opium Wars over China's right to restrict foreign trade in general and the opium trade in particular. In the eighteenth century, the European passion for things Chinese, particularly silk, ceramics and tea, had led to a thriving international commerce that was highly profitable for China. However, the Manchu Qing dynasty restricted foreign merchants to the southeastern city of Canton (Guangzhou). They did not do so out of any disdain for commerce, as is sometimes mistakenly assumed, but because, given spreading European colonialism in Asia, they were extremely wary about the possibly detrimental effect on imperial control of permitting an unrestrained foreign presence in China.

    Hong Kong's Regional Flag Background:
Situated on the south of the Chinese Guangdong (formerly Canton) province, the formerly British Dependent Territory of Hong Kong comprises of Victoria (commonly known as Hong Kong Island), the Kowloon Peninsula, the "New Territories", and 235 outlying islands. Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally ceded by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and the UK on 19 December 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997.
In this agreement, China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be imposed on Hong Kong and that Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years.

India and China are the sources of the greatest civilizations in Eastern and Southern Asia. Their rulers saw themselves as universal monarchs, thereby matching the pretentions of the Roman Emperors in the West. The only drawbacks to their historical priority were that India suffered a setback, when the Indus Valley Civilization collapsed (for disputed reasons), and China got started later than the Middle Eastern civilizations. By the time India recovered, it was a contemporary of Greece, rather than Sumeria, with many parallel cultural developments, like philosophy. And, curiously, China reached a philosophical stage of development in the same era, the "axial age," 800 to 400 BC. Later, when the West, India, and China all had contact with each other, it was at first India that had the most influence on China, through the introduction of Buddhism. Indian influence on the West, though likely through the skepticism of Pyrrho , and possibly evident in the halos of Christian saints (borrowed from Buddhist iconography), did not extend to anything more substantial. While China then made Buddhism its own, India later endured the advent of , which introduced deep cultural and then political divisions into the Subcontinent. The only comparable development in China was the application of

A brief History of the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
When the postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology was first started in Hong Kong, it was modelled after the British system. There was no local professional body to award postgraduate professional degrees. The trainees in obstetrics and gynaecology had to undergo the training as stipulated by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), pass the Membership Examination organised by the RCOG to become Members of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG). To help the RCOG in monitoring the training in Hong Kong, a representative committee was established in Hong Kong consisting of members elected among the local members of the RCOG.
In November, 1985, the Hong Kong Representative Committee of RCOG felt that in view of the Sino-British Agreement, it was time to consider the possibility of establishing a local body for the recognition and supervision of postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynaecology in Hong Kong. A Working Party on Future Postgraduate Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Hong Kong was established by the Representative Committee for this purpose. Professor Ho-Kei Ma was elected as the chairman of the Working Party.

    Emory Report Feb. 8, 1999 Volume 51, No. 19
Action-filled Hong Kong cinema has long history What do swordplay, gunplay, melodrama and ghosts have in common? "Hong Kong cinema," according to Film Studies Professor David Cook. Fighting with swords and guns, exaggerated drama and a bent for the supernaturalghosts, vampires and the spirits of dead ancestorsare four basic ingredients in the last 20 years of films from Hong Kong. This spring Cook is teaching the course, "Hong Kong Cinema," to 40 graduate and undergraduate students. Besides screening more than a dozen films, the course involves reading and discussing books on Hong Kong cinema, the economic history of the three Chinas and the social history of Hong Kong. "We're exploring the market system and the culture that created this national cinema," explained Cook. Hong Kong's film industry has existed since the beginning of the century. Early on, the city-state stood in the shadow of Shang'hai, a more sophisticated metropolis. But during the years of the mainland's civil war (1946-1949), the movie business took off. Hong Kong became the home for free market film in the region. After World War II, Hong Kong experienced tremendous growth and quadrupled in size, becoming one of the world's leading cities. The mid-1960s brought a boom in martial arts films, a genre that became the mainstay of Hong Kong cinema. Cook said the practice of martial arts is central to Chinese culture. "Martial arts embrace Zen Buddhism and began as a form of exercise (Tai Chi) practiced by Shaolin monks in the fourth century A.D. to control and harness their physical energies," he explained. "From the beginning, the domestic and Southeast Asian market for these films was tremendous, helping to make Hong Kong the eighth largest exporter of films in the world."
