History of Hong Kong
Before the British arrived there, Hong Kong was a small fishing community and a haven for travellers and pirates in the South China Sea.
The British used the territory as a naval base during their Opium Wars with China. After the first of such wars, the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 ceded Hong Kong Island to Britain. Sir Henry Pottinger was the territory's first governor. Following other fights and wars with the Chinese, Britain was given Kowloon and Stonecutter's Island in 1860. Lastly, the British aquired the New territories in 1898 on a 99-year contract. The territory grew as more people settled there with time. In the early 1900's. Hong Kong was a refuge for exiles from China, following the establishment of the Chinese Republic in 1912. Following Japan's seizure of Manchuria in 1932, the Sino-Japanese war broke out. As Japan headed towards China, thousand of Chinese people came to Hong Kong, the number of refugees growing rapidly. That brought Hong Kong's population to about 1.6 million people at the start of World War II. World War II disrupted all activity in Hong Kong. On December 25, 1941, the British surrendered the territory to the Japanese army. U.S. submarines brought Japanese planes to Hong Kong to prepare there for further attacks on the East Asian region. After Japan's surrender in August of 1945, Britain reclaimed its territory. After that, Chinese civilians returned and the population, which had decreased rapidly, grew to 1.8 million again.

Hong Kong History and Culture
History The British took control of Hong Kong in 1841 following the Opium Wars. European trade with China had been taking place since the 16th century, but as European demand for tea and silk grew, the balance of trade became more and more unfavourable to Europeans, who were expected to pay in silver. In 1773, the British unloaded 70,000 kg of Bengal opium, and the Chinese taste for the `foreign mud' grew exponentially. Alarmed at the drain of silver from the country and the increasing number of addicts, the emperor banned the drug trade.

The MIT Club of Hong Kong is one of the longest-operating MIT alumni/ae clubs outside of the United States. According to the Association of Alumni and Alumnae of MIT , the Club was established on December 19th, 1951. Throughout its existence, the Club has been capably run by many different individuals for the purpose of advancing the interests of the Institute and serving the MIT community in Hong Kong.
In the past, the Club had held dinner receptions for Dr. Charles Vest, MIT President , as well as various deans and professors of the Institute. Back in 1980, a dinner was held in which world-renown architect Mr. I.M. Pei was guest of honor. In 1992, the Club in conjunction with the MIT Sloan School of Management held a 2-day symposium, entitled Managing Technology: The Role of Technology in Asia in the 21st Century featuring Sloan School Dean Lester Thurow . More recently, the Club sponsored a dinner talk given by Mr. Robert Metcalfe, a pioneer in Internet technologies. But one of the more popular functions ever organized by the Club remains to be the MIT Invitational Sports Day . It started in 1982 as a family day held for Club members and has since become an annual event participated by other university alumni clubs and their members.

About AmCham > History The Founding of AmCham In 1968, a group of executives formed an organizing committee to propose the establishment of an American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. This new chamber was designed to represent the ever-growing range of American business interests in the colony. In addition, the Chamber was to serve as a forum for the exchange and development of ideas among members of the business community, both in Hong Kong and throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Opening of present AmCham office, December 10, 1996. From left to right: Richard Boucher, Former US Consulate General; Mark Michelson, AmCham Chairman; Frank Martin, AmCham President The Chamber's registration as a society was approved by the Hong Kong government in March 1969. The first office was opened at 322 Edinburgh House and the first official Chamber meeting was held on May 17, 1969 at the American Club. The 1970 ACCHK membership directory lists 128 corporate charter members and 13 individual charter members. An early goal of the Membership Committee was to recruit all of the estimated 400 American companies and individuals resident in Hong Kong. By year-end 1970, total membership had increased to 319.

In the late 19th century and early 20th centuries, Hong Kong developed as a warehousing and distribution center for U.K. trade with southern China. After the end of World War II and the communist takeover of Mainland China in 1949, hundreds of thousands of people fled from China to Hong Kong. Hong Kong became an economic success and a manufacturing, commercial, finance, and tourism center. High life expectancy, literacy, per capita income, and other socioeconomic measures attest to Hong Kong's achievements over the last five decades. On July 1, 1997, China resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong, ending more than 150 years of British colonial rule. Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China with a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs. According to the Sino-British Joint Declaration (1984) and the Basic Law for 50 years after reversion Hong Kong will retain its political, economic, and judicial systems and unique way of life and will continue to participate in international agreements and organizations under the name, "Hong Kong, China." The 2000 elections were seen as free, open, and widely contested, although there was criticism that the functional constituency and election committee elections were undemocratic because so few voters were eligible to vote. In July 2002, the Hong Kong Government implemented the Principal Officials Accountability System, which was designed to make the government more responsive to public concerns, and added a layer of 11 political appointees, directly responsible to the Chief Executive, to run the 11 policy bureaus. Three other senior civil service positionsthe Chief Secretary, Financial Secretary, and Justice Secretaryalso were converted to political appointments, although without a change in personnel.

Hong Kong Growing as Part of China:
A Historical Perspective

Y.C. Richard Wong at the Asia Society Conference:
"Hong Kong One Year After Transition: Business
Opportunities and Policy Challenges"
June 15, 1998
Introduction

The story of the emergence of Hong Kong as a modern metropolis from a small fishing village on the South China coast is now standard fare in almost all history books about the territory. What is left untold in this caricature is that Hong Kong was a busy crossroads of trade and cultural intercourse. Indeed, Hong Kong's fortunes rose and fell with its changing relationship with the Chinese mainland over two millennium
With sovereignty over Hong Kong having been restored to China from Britain on 1 July 1997, it is useful to recount the real history, review the period under British rule, so as to find our bearings for the future. This historical perspective is especially important for it puts into perspective the British contribution to the economic development of Hong Kong, especially in the post-war period. It also puts into perspective the many economic and social policy debates that are surfacing now and will be developing in the years ahead.

In the early days, the Institute did not have an office or any employees. All the work was done by a voluntary Executive Council. With limited resources, the Institute embarked on the journey of setting up its own office in its 10th year of existence. A variety of programs were developed with good responses in terms of quality and financial contributions.
One milestone of the Institute's development was the moving of office in November 1996 to a more convenient and spacious location in North Point. This created a new meeting place for members and fostered a stronger sense of belongings.

Its modern history...
Prior to the arrival of the British, Hong Kong was a small fishing community and a haven for travellers and pirates in the South China Sea. During the Opium Wars with China in the Nineteenth Century, Britain used the territory as a naval base. Following the end of the first Opium War , the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 ceded Hong Kong to Britain in perpetuity. Sir Henry Pottinger, whose name can be found on a street in Central district, was its first governor. Following additional conflicts with the Chinese in 1860 Britain gained Kowloon and Stonecutters Island. In 1898 Britain acquired the New Territories on a 99-year lease. Settlement in the territory grew slowly with the population rose from 32,983 in 1851 to 878,947 in 1931. During the teens and twenties of this century, Hong Kong served as a refuge for exiles from China following the establishment of the Chinese Republic in 1912. After Japan seized Manchuria in 1932, the Sino-Japanese war broke out in 1937. Throughout the late thirties, as Japan advanced into China, hundreds of thousands of Chinese took refuge in Hong Kong. It was estimated that some 100,000 refugees entered in 1937, 500,000 in 1938 and 150,000 in 1939 - bringing Hong Kong's population at the outbreak of World War II to an estimated 1.6 million. It was thought that at the height of the influx, about 500,000 people were sleeping in the streets.
