Poshek Fu and David Desser ed, The cinema of Hong Kong: history, arts, identity Cambridge University Press, 2000. ISBN 521 77235 4 (hb) 521 77602 3 (pb) $Au59.95 (pb) (Review copy supplied by Cambridge University Press) This is the second anthology on Hong Kong cinema to appear recently, alongside Esther Yau's At full speed (University of Minnesota Press, 2001). It is perhaps ironic that the academic celebration of Hong Kong arrives as we read daily of the crisis in the HK film industry. As with genres such as the western, and the embrace of Hollywood directors as auteurs, it seems that the acceptance of a body of films within the academic canon often comes at the moment when it has lost its industrial vitality. The Arts section is led off by David Bordwell's piece on visual style in the films of King Hu. This essay (which will be familiar to many from the 1998 Hong Kong International Film Festival catalogue ) reminds us that Hong Kong films also represent something more specific than simply reflections of larger cultural moments. While King Hu's films are steeped in the history of Chinese cultural forms, they also signify attempts by a working filmmaker to find innovative solutions to narrative, generic and technical problems. Read together with his stylistic analysis of martial arts films in the Yau anthology, Bordwell offers us a good example of the fruits of posing tangible, small-scale questions, such as: how exactly are action films staged, shot and cut? Those of us who teach young people who want to be filmmakers will have a sense of the relevance of these questions.

Farewell to British Hong Kong
History
Lord Palmerston, the British Foreign Secretary, was far from happy about the decision, believing that "this barren island with hardly a house upon it" would never be suitable for a trading base. Poor Palmerston! He couldn't have got it more wrong! Subsequently, Elliot was punished by being sent to Texas as Britain's Consul General, and Britain leased Kowloon Point under the Treaties of Tientsin in perpetuity, and the 350 square miles of the Mainland and outlying islands known as the New Territories were an additional area that Britain leased in 1898 for a period of 99 years. When I first visited Hong Kong in the 1950's, it had not yet appeared on the tourist map. In those days there were only two major hotels that classed themselves as top standard the even-then-magnificent Peninsula Hotel on the Kowloon waterfront which had been staff headquarters for the Japanese Army during the occupation, and the venerable old Gloucester Hotel, now long gone but at that time the Island's finest. My most vivid recollection is of arriving in the large dining room for breakfast. The only other guest was a white-suited, pith-helmeted Englishman reading the newspaper through a monocle. In that empty room he could have been straight off the cast of a Humphrey Bogart movie.

Last year, two of the most amusing Hong Kong movie titles were HONG KONG HISTORY X, named after the U.S. film AMERICAN HISTORY X, and HONG KONG PIE, named after AMERICAN PIE. Not that either of the films had anything to do with their american namesakes. Now, as GEN-X COPS gave way to GEN-Y, HK HISTORY has now moved another letter down in the alphabet, as if the X is not significant of anything. Next, I expect to see the sequel to HK PIE named HONG KONG THETA. The movie itself, at least on the VCD version, has no english subtitles. Rating: (No English subtitles

    Interview with Samshasha,
Hong Kong's First Gay Rights Activist and Author
Conducted and presented by Mark McLelland
    Introduction
  • Samshasha (a pseudonym, also known by the Chinese-character pen-name Xiaomingxiong) was Hong Kong's first gay activist. Born of mainland Chinese parents in Hong Kong in the early 1950s, he was educated locally until high school before going to the United States to receive his university education. Having encountered the gay rights movement during his stay in America, Sam returned to Hong Kong in 1979 at a time when all homosexual contact between men was illegal, anal sex carrying the penalty of life imprisonment.
  • In 1968, the Hong Kong government first attempted to 'legalise' homosexual acts (between two consenting adult males in private). The issue was favoured by few liberal British expatriate legislators but strongly opposed by local Chinese communities (religious and political ones especially) - if only to re-enforce the 'decadent west tries to pollute the innocent Chinese' theory. In 1980, after a series of homosexual scandals involving British expatriates, the colonial Government again attempted to introduce homosexual law reform but its attempts were fiercely resisted by sectors within the Chinese community which insisted that homosexuality was a western vice, unknown in Chinese tradition.
  • To counter this myth, Sam began to publish gay liberation texts in Chinese including

History Life forms existed more than 6,000 years ago at many sites along the winding shoreline of Hong Kong. It was believed that during the earliest prehistoric periods, from the close of the fourth millennium BC, Hong Kong experienced a change in the environment, in which the sea levels rose from as much as 100 meters below the present level. Ancient artifacts suggest a strong dependency on the sea. According to recent excavations, archaeologists have discovered two main Neolithic cultures lying in stratified sequence. Pieces of coarse, cord-marked pottery has been found together with fine, soft, fragile pottery decorated with linear carvings, perforations and paintings. The fourth millennium BC is associated with this phase. In the next phase, probably in the mid-third millennium BC, a new ceramic form decorated with a wide range of impressive geometric patterns was found. Better workmanship and a melange of different shapes indicate a progression in techniques. Ornaments, such as rings made from quartz and other stones, display exquisite craftsmanship.
