A brief synopsis on the flag law
(from http://www.hk1997.china.com/english/97news/jun_archives/970606.146.html ): The correct use of the Chinese national flag and the regional flag of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) have been determined in regulations passed by the 58th executive meeting of the State Council, held here [in Beijing] on Thursday. In accordance with the National Flag Law of the People's Republic of China, the regulations demand that when the national flag and regional flag of the Hong Kong SAR are raised or used at the same time, the national flag should be at the central, a higher or prominent position. When the two flags are used at the same time and placed side by side, the national flag should be larger than the regional flag, with the national flag taking the right position and the regional flag taking the left.

Passengers queue as Utor slows then stops flights out of Hong Kong HONG KONG, China Even in a weakened state tropical storm Utor continued to wreak damage across southern China, killing three people, wiping out thousands of homes and causing destruction estimated at $2.5 billion. The toll in the Philippines was still being counted and was still rising: 121 dead and 44 still missing, according to local civil defense as reported by The Associated Press. At Hong Kong and other airports in the path of what was originally a typhoon-strength blast, thousands of stranded air passengers sorted out disrupted travel plans. The state-run Southern Metropolitan Daily newspaper reported on Saturday that the storm had affected more than five million people in Guangdong, where it hit on Friday. VIDEO CNN's Mike Chinoy reports on Utor.

Hong Kong's techno tour
Tourists shopping for electronics in Hong Kong can now choose to shop with the help of a chauffeur guide From Andrew Brown CNN Hong Kong, CHINA (CNN) Hong Kong can be a daunting place for international tourists. Despite being a well-known destination, visitors still have to deal with the crowds, the heat, and the risk of being cheated in the many shopping districts. One hotel has started a chauffeur service which escorts tourists to the city's notorious electronics stores in a bid to ensure their guests do not get cheated. Since the 1950's Hong Kong has promised to deliver the latest gadgets at the lowest prices. Of course, it helps to have a guide when you go shopping. The Excelsior Hotel provides trusty chauffeurs who accompany guests to electronics stores around town. "You must bargain, about 10 per cent to 20 per cent," says Ben Leung, an Excelsior chauffeur.

Hong Kong wrestles with China Dream
In better times, expats were drawn to the city's Eastern mystique and booming economy By Marianne Bray CNN HONG KONG, China (CNN) When Mary Painter came to Hong Kong in 1976 with her husband, a civil engineer, she was one of hordes of British who flocked to the colonial outpost. Drawn in part by the mystique of the Far East, and the dream of making it rich in a colony, British opium traders, backpackers and bankers have made the Pearl of the Orient with its tiger economy their home for more than 150 years. "In the 1970s Hong Kong was booming and there was so much work," says Painter, who is secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society in this Asian megalopolis. While the "West meets East" entrepot has suffered setbacks over the decades among them an invading Japan and a communist revolution next door the city has been in a real funk since it changed hands in 1997. "Before the handover, Hong Kong had a story, it was a British colony," said Tim Bredbury, who has lived in the city for 33 years and runs a sports management company.
