Honduras Study Guide Part 3: Activities Grades 6 - 9
The major topics of "Destination: Honduras" have been developed in accordance with the five fundamental themes of geography. The title of each topic is followed by a series of codes which specifies the themes addressed: L = Location P = Place Rel = Relationships within Places M = Movement Reg = Regions Activities:
  • Nuestro Pais: Our Country" ( P)
  • "What Makes Honduras Special?" (P)
  • "A Rough Experience" (Rel)
  • "Think Globally" (Rel)
Honduras Activities Grades 6 - 9: Nuestro Pais: Our Country (P)
Materials: Reading "Nuestro Pais: Our Country" which follows these suggestions Background Information:
This overview of the geography of Honduras is from the third grade social studies textbook Nuestro Pais which is used by Honduran students in both public and private schools. (Because of their cost and because all students must buy their own materials, textbooks are not usually available in rural schools.)
Activity Ideas:
  • Have students silently read the overview in Nuestro Pais: Our Country looking for the most important point about Honduras's geography. Compare responses, asking students to give evidence for their choices. As students read the rest of the selection, ask them to look for the influence of the mountains on climate, vegetation, and lifestyle. Alternatively, divide students into groups of four and have each student in the group read and summarize a different section of Nuestro Pais. Share the summaries within the groups, again noting the influence of Honduras's mountains on its climate, vegetation, and lifestyles.

of Honduras
Background:
Part of Spain's vast empire in the New World, Honduras became an independent nation in 1821. After two and one-half decades of mostly military rule, a freely elected civilian government came to power in 1982.
During the 1980s, Honduras proved a haven for anti-Sandinista contras fighting the Marxist Nicaraguan Government and an ally to Salvadoran Government forces fighting against leftist guerrillas.
The country was devastated by Hurricane Mitch in 1998, which killed about 5,600 people and caused almost $1 billion in damage. Distribution of secondary marine resources PLATES Click for descriptions Appendix 1 Appendix 2 References ABSTRACT Evidence of a substantial aboriginal coastal population was discovered in and around several large lagoons having an environment presently unsuited for agriculture. Surface remains suggest these Indians were sea-oriented, but precise stratigraphic data is required for further research. Analysis of pertinent colonial literature indicates that few items of the aboriginal fishing cultures were adopted by early settlers, and almost none is to be found in the present inventory of equipment.
