Living Cultures Honduras' strong cultural heritage is based on its ethnic diversity a mixture of indigenous European and African races. About 90 percent of the Honduran population is mestizo, a mixture of indigenous, African, and Spanish races also referred to as Ladino. Honduras takes great pride in its indigenous history. The country's currency the Lempira is named after the chief of the Lencas, who led 30,000 Indians against the Spanish and repeatedly repulsed their invasions. Sadly, Lempira was betrayed, and assassinated during peace talks in 1536. Understanding Honduras' unique cultural history is facilitated by visits to the country's numerous archaeological sites. The must visit site is Copán, one of the most heralded sites in the extensive "Mundo Maya" and for good reason. The area was settled by about 1200 B.C. and abandoned by the end of the ninth century, soon after it reached its peak. During that time, Mayan sculpture reached its zenith particularly in the carving of stelae and altars and the city boasts more sculptures than any other site in the Maya World. Visitors to the nearby town of Copán Ruinas can easily hire guides to explain not only the ruins but the surrounding area as well.

    Honduras People
Even though the flora and fauna are extremely tempting all around Honduras, the people play a major role in vacationing in Honduras. The people are from diverse cultures, and preserve their facets of culture in Honduras. The Garifuna, from African and Caribbean descent, keep their language and culture, and their villages display traditional architecture. The indigenous people include the Chorti Maya, near the Guatemalan border, Miskitos in the Honduran rainforest, and the Lenca people from the south and west in Honduras. Spanish and English speakers descend from Europe, and Chinese and Palestinian descendents are from Asia.
    Honduras Key Areas
La Ceiba is a port city of Honduras and a place to truly play. Its beaches are very beautiful and there is a spirit of carnival in the streets, nightclubs and bars, where Caribbean sounds float in the air. The nearby Pico Bonito National Park welcomes the extensive ecotourism possibilities, with rocky slopes in a cloud forest. The Rio Cangrejal, also minutes from La Ceiba is excellent for rafting Trujillo is a community wealthy in Spanish Colonial history and heritage. A gorgeous bay is near Trujillo, and to the south are the rather hidden Cuyamel Caves to explore. The large national park Capiro and Calentura offers a great place for hiking, privacy, and great views. The nightlife is hopping with everything from the Garifuna culture music neighborhood, to right on the beach.

    Tegucigalpha:
The capital was originally founded as a mining camp in 1524. Unlike so many of Central America's cities, Tegucigalpa has never been subjected to the disasters of earthquake or fire and so retains many traditional features. Also recommended is a visit to neighboring Comayagua, former capital of Honduras and now a colonial masterpiece of cobbled streets, tiny plazas and whitewashed houses. Copan: The ancient city of Copán is 171 km (106 miles) from San Pedro Sula. The Copán Ruins Archaeological Park in western Honduras is the best remaining testament to the culture of the Mayan Indians. Among the best of the ruins are the magnificent Acropolis composed of courts and temples, the Great Plaza, a huge amphitheater, and the Court of the Hieroglyphic Stairway. Near the Great Acropolis, recent archaeological work has brought to light invaluable excavations. The majority of the site's original sculptures are on display at the Copán Sculpture Museum whose four-story centerpiece is the Rosalita temple, a full-scale replica of a temple recently excavated beneath the Acropolis. The Caribbean Coast: Two coastal towns are important to tourists and commercial visitors: La Ceiba and Trujillo. La Ceiba, which lies at the foot of the towering 1500m (5000 ft) Pico Bonito, still a major banana port, now looks to tourism (and particularly eco-tourism) as a future major industry. There are good hotels and beaches, and an international airport - one of the city's major assets. The nearby Pico Bonito National Park is a protected rain forest area where high rainfall and steep slopes combine to form numerous waterfalls and spectacular scenery.

San Pedro Sula and Lake Yojoa: Honduras Cultural Tour Day 2 This morning we depart for Lake Yojoa, via Santa Barbara, a typical Honduran rural town. Lake Yojoa is a natural lake, surrounded by massive mountains, amongst which is Cerro Santa Barbara, the second highest peak in Honduras with almost 2400 m (8,000 ft) elevation. These majestic mountains surrounding the lake are home to two of Honduras's National Parks: Santa Barbara on the Northern shore, and Azul Meambar on the Southern shore. The combination of vegetation and water create an impressively diverse habitat that is home to many different species of flora and fauna, inlcuding over 373 species of birds! Lake Yojoa has also long been attractive to humans. During the time span of the millennium prior to Christ and well into the first millennium of our era, the shores of the lake were inhabited by native Americans believed to be of the Lenca Culture. Descendants of the Lencas still populate much of western Honduras and, although their native language has long disappeared, many of their precolombian customs and beliefs survive.
