CULTURE The interaction of both Native American and Spanish strains in Honduran cultural history is clearly visible in the architecture. Many colonial buildings show strong Native American influences combined with baroque, Renaissance, and Moorish styles imported by the Spanish.

Honduras (07/05) Since independence, Honduras has been plagued with nearly 300 incidents of unrest, including internal rebellions, civil wars, and changes of governmentmore than half of which occurred during the 20th century. The country traditionally lacked both an economic infrastructure and social and political integration. Its agriculture-based economy was dominated in the 1900s by U.S. companies that established vast banana plantations along the north coast. Foreign capital, plantation life, and conservative politics held sway in Honduras from the late 19th century until the mid-20th century. During the relatively stable years of the Great Depression, authoritarian Gen. Tiburcio Carias Andino controlled Honduras. His ties to dictators in neighboring countries and to U.S. banana companies helped him maintain power until 1948. By then, provincial military leaders had begun to gain control of the two major parties, the Nationalists and the Liberals. ... [ Read More U.S. - Honduras Agreement, 2004

    Family
As with much of Latin America , the family is very important in Honduras. Families are usually large, and people will usually be in close contact with members of their extended family The elderly , especially grandparents, are highly respected because of their experience through their lives. Because so many Hondurans live below the poverty line , extended family acts as a safety net, with family members helping each other through difficult times by providing both financial and emotional support, for example, a grandfather might tend a

Students need to have current measles vaccination and Hepatitis A and B vaccinations. Students will be required to bring their own medications for the trip. Doctors will be available to the group in Honduras, and an emergency medical plan will be discussed during orientation. Students and parents will be provided a list of all contact numbers, including the American Embassy in Honduras , where our group travel will be registered prior to departure.
Reflections Taken from a Student's Journal from a Previous Trip
Having a flushable toilet and a hot shower is a luxury. I'm okay going out of my comfort zone. I need to take some Spanish lessons. I hate when people stare. I wish more people could have experiences like this. In summary, yes-this trip changed my life. All of my experiences were positive in that I walked away affected by each one. I'm sad to say goodbye to Honduras and el grupo , but I'll remember it forever!"

Two Strategic Pastoral Action delegations from upstate New York spent two weeks in January meeting with human-rights leaders in Honduras living under death threats and adding a hand to the construction of a women's shelter and health clinic. One delegation of nine persons concentrated on the human-rights work and the building of a women's shelter while the other of eight persons helped to construct a health clinic and shipped a school-bus full of clinic supplies which arrived at a Honduras port while they were there. The human-rights delegation met with leaders of several organizations whose activists advocate for indigenous rights, the halt to secret U.S. involvement in Honduras affairs, for victims of military and police torture, the end to domestic violence against women, to help street children, to locate persons "disappeared" by death squads, and who report about Honduran government and military coverups.

Billboards were knocked over, trees uprooted, while phone and data lines were sent into chaos. Though the storm wasn't a hurricane it could be an ominous sign of things to come. Mostly Maya; An Exploration of Travel Among the Maya Mostly Maya is dedicated to understanding the culture and archaeology of the Maya. It is also geared to making budget and other travel in the Maya areas and in the ruins in Mesoamerica simpler to arrange. I look for links which are relevant to planning an inexpensive trip via the Internet, but this is best done using the additional advice of a good guide book, such as Lonely Planet or the Rough Guide. I also look for better ways to get to some of the more obscure locations. The site is a hobby and it takes no ads. I note mostly local sources, with a preference for inexpensive hotels, local day trips and other local services. I believe that it is better to deal directly with locally owned businesses where possible, because they are more likely to keep both income and profits within the local economies. I also plug places or services I like while traveling in Maya areas. You will also find pages occasionally add pages for commercial and non-commercial places that I like while traveling, which have no website. See additional information Who are the Maya?

Tegucigalpa - Culture Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, got its tongue twisting name from the ancient Nahuatl language, and translated means "silver mountain" In effect, Tegucigalpa came to being during colonial times as a mining center. "Tegus" as its inhabitants affectionately call it, is a mix of an old colonial city that has turned into the modern capital of Honduras. As a matter of fact, Tegucigalpa became the most important mining center in Central America during colonial times. Tegucigalpa's entry to the list of country capitals came to be by chance. It is said that the society of Comayagua, the long time colonial capital of Honduras, publicly disliked the wife of president Marco Aurelio Soto, who took revenge by moving the capital of the republic to Tegucigalpa. A city with very pleasant climate, Tegucigalpa is nestled in a valley at about 3000 ft making its climate ideal. A gateway into Pacific coast, as well as to the numerous attractions that are located in central and southern Honduras. Getting around Tegucigalpa can be a confusing experience. Despite the colonial history of the city, it does not have the typical layout of square streets around the central park. This is mostly due to the fact that terrain around the city did not allow this. Originally, two separate cities, Tegucigalpa and Comayaguela have grown into one big city. The Choluteca river is still the official boundary between the sister cities, and Tegucigalpa is by far the better of the two. The majority of colonial buildings and higher end neighborhoods being located within its boundaries. Today, both cities have been officially joined, sharing the same city mayor, etc.
