Honduras Business: Greetings and Courtesies
Handshakes are the common greeting among both men and women; handshakes are gentle almost limp and somewhat prolonged, except among Hondurans already involved in and familiar with international business standards. Titles are important, and foreign visitors should call their business counterparts by their title and last name unless requested to do otherwise.
Honduras Business: Ethic and Framework
When doing business in Honduras, you will often hear the Spanish phrase s i Dios quiere (God willing) when a promise or commitment is made. Because of the difficulties of surviving in such a poor country, most Hondurans are quite fatalistic. They are content with their current place in a business hierarchy because they know they cannot control events. Consequently, they are more likely to keep a low profile in business and avoid "rocking the boat." Opportunities for social mobility are practically nonexistent, and Hondurans make the most they can out of where they are. Do not be surprised if a functionary or official indicates that he will be better be able to assist you if you can help him in some tangible, most often monetary, way.

Country Info Honduras Introduction Honduras General Data Honduras Maps Honduras Culture ... Honduras Time and Date Honduras Culture Back to Top Honduran society is, for the most part, rural and poor. The overall standard of living in the nation is one of the lowest in the Western Hemisphere. Foreign as well as domestic assessments of the nation have focused on its poverty to the point where this assessment dominates the outlook of the Honduran people. contempt the depressing statistics, Honduran society has numerous strengths. Among some of the positive factors are a comparatively high number of grassroots organizations, a peasant movement that has continued even during times of repression, and a corporatist political system in which organizations and classes instead of political parties make their political demands. Positive, too, is the absence of civil war and the high level of terrorism experienced by neighboring countries. The question for Honduras in the future is how, given the nation's limited resources, to deal with severe poverty and to avoid the repression and violence that poverty often engenders.

adsonar_pid=3019;adsonar_ps=370666;adsonar_zw=540;adsonar_zh=220;adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com'; Once the deposits were exhausted at the end of the 16th century, Honduras became a colonial backwater and remained so until the collapse of the Spanish empire in the Americas in the early-19th century. As Spanish power disintegrated in the wake of the Napoleonic wars, the Central American territories were in disagreement as to whether to join Mexico or establish their own federation of states. The latter course was chosen, with the acquiescence of Mexico. From a longer-term perspective, this development clearly eased the process whereby the USA came to dominate the whole central American region. During the early 20th century, Honduras was governed by a series of caudillos, notably President Carias who dominated the country during the 1930s and 1940s. Partido Nacional (PN) and the Partido Liberal (PL), fought a close contest for both the presidency, which was won by the PN candidate Rafael Leonardo Callejas, and the National Assembly, in which the PL won a small majority of seats.

The remaining Indian tribes have their own distinct languages. Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion, but there are also many other Christian sects and denominations, including Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, Baptists, Pentecostals, Assemblies of God, Evangelicals and so on. The indigenous tribes have their own religions, often existing alongside Christianity and incorporating elements of African and Indian animism and ancestor worship. Honduran crafts include wood carving (notably wooden instruments), basketry, embroidery and textile arts, leathercraft and ceramics. The country's cuisine is based around beans, rice, tortillas, fried bananas, meat, potatoes, cream and cheese.

Tales of Honduras From a Frequent Visitor
A bit of Honduras culture, this is a completely unedited story sent to me by a friend. I found it lively and fascinating, with maybe a little O.Henry flavor. Hope you do, too. Read it if you dare! J. McMillin, ROL Part One All of this story I am relaying as I saw it and is based on what I saw and heard. The opinions expressed in this story are of the people in this story. Do not flame me for any parts you do not agree with. Well as it was told to me that in the last 18 to 24 months no new gringos have moved to La Ceiba and well some people have left and others have died and nobody has taken their place. The only real gringos that come to La Ceiba are back packers and at the most they spend is roughly $20 for the couple days they are there. When Bob was running Dieters old bar, the people who ran Queens's burger wanted Bob out. They saw Bob as competition. Now that Bob was gone his business has dropped off and the middle of the week it's closed. Although they cant see it but its best there is a few bars right next to each other. Draws more people in and they can bar hop. The reason Bob left was the rent was too high and he had to leave. The bar now is empty and has been for a while. Every so often Bob would see the owners and would remind them of the money they have lost by not dropping the price. Every so often I went to look at the bar and thought about days gone with Dieter. Now looking around town I was told basically every business was for sale. One common thread was that the people want an exorbitant price and would come down on the price. Now I was really interested in the ex-pat bar. Bob had told me that it was put on the market for fifty thousand American. Well there were no takers and the price steadily dropped until it got to eight thousand. At this point he decided not to sell and stick it out. Basically the thinking is that in two years La Ceiba would be back. Now I was told that Gonzales had gotten out of jail.

Roatan Honduras Fishing Tournament Winners
Fishing is an Important Part of Honduras Culture The annual fishing tournament held on Roatan in September, 1999, had two surprise winners. Pictured here are, on the left, Aimee McNab (15 years old) and Christianne Etches (14) with the 159 lb. blue marlin that netted them first prize in several categories, including largest fish caught. The young women are students at Children's Palace Bilingual School in French Harbor, Roatan. Amidst many large and expensive fishing boats, Aime and Christianne set out from French Harbor in a simple 18' boat. They hooked this fellow off West End Point and discovered they had forgotten to bring a gaff with them. Aime removed her sweatshirt and tied it around the fish's bill and she and Christianne managed to pull it onto their boat with their hands. There were many contestants in the 1999 Annual Fishing Tournament, and the second largest fish weighed in at less than 50 lbs. The largest blue marlin caught in one of Roatan's annual tournaments weighed 450 lbs. We're not saying that you will catch something like this one, but fishing charters are easily arranged for visitors to Roatan. You just never know....
