81. RESEARCH ETHICS
Intended for high school biology classes.
http://www.accessexcellence.org/AE/AEPC/WWC/1992/research_ethics.html
RESEARCH ETHICS
Frank C. Jahn and Carol L. Mitch
1992 Woodrow Wilson Biology Institute
Rationale:
We hope to teach science as a process; to accomplish this we use experimental labs and independent research projects. When we discuss science as a process, we usually present an idealized view which holds that honesty is a necessary basis for scientific endeavor. Recently, the media have reported misconduct and fraud by scientists. A possible consequence is the inference by students that cheating is common among scientists and that there is little connection between what is taught in the classroom and what happens in the "real world." By extension, the body of knowledge developed by honest scientists is also suspect. By evaluating historical instances of misconduct and exploring the ethics involved in honest data analysis, it is hoped that students will begin to understand the consequences of scientific misconduct and the importance of self-regulation within the scientific community.
Intended Audience:
Grades 9 - 12; Biology and/or Student Research

The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) works to increase the amount of quality wildlife habitat on corporate, private and public lands.

Teaching Students About Backyard Conservation Backyard Conservation is a program of the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) that teaches citizens how to improve water quality and provide habitat for wildlife using conservation techniques developed for farms. The Backyard Conservation education modules encourage students and their families to explore and investigate the fascinating natural world in our own backyards. Furthermore, the modules allow schools to utilize nearby natural areas as outdoor classrooms, reducing or eliminating the need for costly and time prohibitive field trips.
Backyard Conservation provides excellent resources to undertake community-based ecological restoration at homes, schools, businesses and parks. With the emphasis on community, Backyard Conservation provides a vehicle for helping teachers and students of all ages meet and integrate curriculum requirements in areas such as science, math, social studies and language.

Most titles are links: just click on them and use the "back" button to return. I started out to do a lesson on poetry and before I knew it the whole thing was getting out of hand and I ended up with a page with links. I just like poetry too much and over the years I have developed more than a dozen integrated units that revolve around themes and/or styles. I have a firm belief that poetry has got to be taught within an easily understood frame such as "imagist' poetry or "love" poetry or "humanist" poetry or "modern problems"; you just can't throw a bunch of poems together and hope to get to the test with as little hassle as possible. There is one overwhelming argument in favour of teaching poetry and that is that it is a form of communication and part of an English teacher's job is to teach communication skills. You might also impress upon your students the following bit of thinking:

Safety Lesson Plans
Safety Art (grades 1+) prepares children for International Walk to School Day. The lesson reviews the four most fantastic reasons to walk and ride and the six simple steps to staying safe. The children make picket style signs to carry and large banners to place at staging areas and in front of schools. Making these signs gets kids excited about the event and equips them with a device which makes them more visible in traffic. Download the pdf Click here for an 11x17 safety poster Stop! Look! Listen! (2nd grade) is a lesson addressing the behavior which statistically causes the greatest number of injuries for child pedestrians: failure to stop at the edge and look for traffic. The lesson uses direct instruction, NHTSA's video Safe Crossings With Willie Whistle, modeling and practice. Children will learn the importance of stopping at every edge, looking left, right, then left again (all the way over the shoulder), listening for cars and only crossing if it's clear. The Walking Obstacle Course (2nd grade) The course is a simulation of street crossing situations. Students will demonstrate the procedure of stopping at the edge, looking left then right, then left again (looking all of the way over their shoulder) before crossing, doing so only if it is clear. Four obstacles: legally parked cars, cars parked in the crosswalk, the shrub (visual obstacle) and the moving car, give students an opportunity to put into practice what they learned in Stop! Look! Listen!
