Do you have fast Internet! View the video of our history BRIEF HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE OF COOPERATIVE EXTENSION There are several sources of information regarding the history of the Land Grant University, available to you on loan from the Staff Development library and you should be aware of the many on line resources such as the NASULGC , (National Association of State and Land Grant Universities) web site and USDA sites, such as the History of American Agriculture from 1776 to 1990 Cooperative Extension is a key component of the largest educational delivery system in the world, the Land Grant University system. Listed below are key pieces of enabling legislation at the federal level that began to emerge which shaped our mission: In 1862 the Morrill Act provided for at least one college in each state to be established where "the leading object shall be, without excluding other scientific or classical studies, to teach such branches as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts".
In 1887 the Hatch Act allowed for the establishment of Agricultural Experiment Stations at one Land Grant College in each state. This is important because this act established agricultural research as a recognized function of the Land Grant University.

Interviewer: Meredith Johnston
Date: March 3, 2004
MJ: This is Meredith Johnston and I am here at the Child Nutrition Archives at the National Food Service Management Institute. It is March 3, 2004 and I am interviewing Ms. June Crews. Ms. Crews, would you tell us a little about yourself, where you grew up and where you have lived? JC: Yes, I was born June Lowry in Pontotoc Mississippi, at the corner of Oxford and Main, in a house; I was born in a house. I’ve lived all over the state of Mississippi. I was a Depression baby, born June 25, 1930, and that was right, I considered myself a Depression baby. I lived in Pontotoc for a while. Actually, I remember that I had my fourth birthday in Oxford. My father was in school here that summer, and then he was a school principal, first, I remember, in Artesia and then later in Redwood, Mississippi. And, this is, Redwood is near Vicksburg, and so we lived around Vicksburg; he was principal of the schools at Redwood and Culkin. Culkin Academy I remember. But, I really feel like I grew up in New Albany, Mississippi. I was there from the time I was in the sixth grade through high school. I went to school at MSCW, Mississippi State College for Women, as it was then.

HOME ECONOMISTS IN THE COMMUNITY Jean Oddie Wenhardt: Member of the Order of the British Empire The Order of the British Empire O.B E. was created during the First World War in 1917 by King George V. It was intended to honour the large number of people in the British Isles and other parts of the Empire who were contributing valuable service to the war effort. From1918 onwards there were both military and civil categories as George V wanted to reward services in a much broader sense including arts and sciences, public services outside the Civil Service and work with charitable and welfare organizations. Jean Wenhardt received the Member of the Order of the British Empire (M.B. E.) in the 1940s for her work with the Junior Red Cross in Saskatchewan during World War II. She was presented the award by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan at the time, A. P. McNab. There are now over 100,000 living members of the Order throughout the world. Once every four years approximately 2000 members attend a service a St. Paul's Cathedral to celebrate the Order. Jean, who recently moved to Victoria in 2004, traveled to London with her son Wes and daughter-in-law Paula to attend the May 26, 2004 service. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were in attendance and Jean was fortunate to have a seat very close to the front.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Career Choices curriculum:
Most of my students are headed for college. Why do they need career guidance?
Studies clearly show college freshmen that have a career in mind are more likely to graduate than their classmates with no career choice. Being career-focused is the highest indicator of success for college students.
I teach English! Why should I get involved with career and life planning?
Presenting a career-planning theme in an English classroom-or any other academic classroom-adds instant relevancy, capturing the imaginations of even hard-to-motivate students. Students are engaged because the reading and writing assignments address their most important identity issues most important . The Possibilities anthology includes many required pieces, but encourages students to view the literature from a new point of view.
I just don't have the time to learn a whole new curriculum?

Welcome to my Gallery of Home Economics Textbooks. I will be adding new books as I get them, provided they're as gorgeous as the ones pictured here, of course. I really hated home ec when I had to take it in
junior high school. Dress by Bess V. Oerke (Peoria, Illinois: Chas A. Bennett Co., Inc., 1956; Ninth Large Printing, 1960) - I got this one at a St. Vincent de Paul in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. What's particularly pleasing about it, besides the beautiful color cover, is the fact that someone's sewing assignment - a small square of white cotton with some large and wobbly stitches in red - was left between the covers. Even better, there was also a copy of The Mercedian , school newspaper of Mercy High, dated Feb. 17, 1967, announcing that Mary Clare Fabishak finished first among Mercy seniors in the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow contest. I was at a particularly self-conscious and uncomfortable stage of adolescence, and I hated "girly" stuff with a passion. I already knew how to cook, so that was no big deal, although eating during class was definitely
a benefit.

Manny, Middle School Teacher: Louisville, Kentucky "Have students plan a personal diet that is nutritional, accommmodates activity level and optimal weight. Have students keep a journal of what they eat on a daily basis and record the energy levels that they experience as a reult of thie dietary in-take. Use it for discussion purposes and have students analyze the effect of diet on energy, academic performance, moods, sleep patterns, etc."
Learning How to Cook
Anthony, 4th Grade Teacher: Madison, Wisconsin "I beleive that students should learn food preparation at a very early age. It builds repsonsibility and appreciation for providing meals that are nutritional and satisfying. I choose up to 24 different recipes that as a class we follow during the course of the year. I try to coordinate it with what I am doing academically, be it in language arts or social studies. I have a two burner electric unit avaliable along with electric frying pans, and even a barbeque grill when weather permits. I also have a small refrigerator in my classroom to store perishables that are needed for any of the recipes. it is a special treat for my students to collaboratively plan meals that we all share. make sure you are aware of any food alllergies that your students may have."

Hunt, Caroline (1865-1927)
Caroline Hunt Appointed as the first professor of home economics at the University of Wisconsin in 1903, Caroline Hunt was forced to resign only five years later. Her life and her short tenure at UW indicate some of the tensions and debates that surrounded the establishment of home economics programs within colleges. Her attempts to create a home economics program may not have met with approval from university officials in her own time, but with the benefit of hindsight her vision for the field appears worthy of much admiration. Hunt believed that home economics ought to provide a general and interdisciplinary education. Her own broad interests can be seen in her educational background. For her undergraduate degree, completed in 1888 at Northwestern University, she majored in Latin and enrolled in a variety of science and language courses. After graduation, she taught chemistry and physics at two high schools. Between 1893 and 1896, she carried out graduate work in chemistry and German at Northwestern University. For two of these years, she lived part-time at Hull House, where she collected data for two studies:
