Title Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt by Deborah Hopkinson with illustrations by James Ransome (Alfred A. Knopf, New York, NY, 1993) Lesson Developed by Patricia King Robeson Literature Annotation : This story is based on a true, little-known chapter in African American history. As a seamstress in the Big House, Clara knows she's better off than the slaves who work the fields. But slavery has separated Clara from her mother, and she can never be happy without her. Clara dreams that they will be reunited one day and run away together - north to freedom. Then Clara hears two slaves talking about how they could find the Underground Railroad if only they had a map. In a flash of inspiration, she sees how to use the cloth in her scrap bag to sew a map of the land - a freedom quilt - that no master will ever suspect is a map to freedom. Grade Level Duration : 3 to 4 class periods; this lesson could be used to introduce other lessons or discussions on migration and the different reasons people have for moving.

Chapter 7: The President and the Executive Branch
"The President and Foreign Policy" Introduction
In this chapter students studied the seven roles of the president. One of these roles is that of Chief Diplomat. For thirty years the United States maintained no diplomatic ties with the most heavily populated country in the world-China. When communists led by Mao Zedong successfully ousted the nationalist government, the United States broke off all diplomatic relations. President Richard Nixon was determined to visit China and resume normal diplomatic ties. Consider the effects of Nixon's foreign policy decision. What American companies trade with China, today? How may Americans buy products that were made in China? What is our relationship with China today? Lesson Description
Students will visit the PBS online feature entitled "Nixon's China Game." They will review events on a time line, and read about the role of Ping-Pong diplomacy and Richard Nixon. After answering several questions about the material, they will be asked to think about the effects of our relationship with China on our economy. They will construct a chart showing American businesses in China and Chinese products in America. Instructional Objectives
  • The learner will be able to describe the president's role in a foreign policy decision concerning China.

    1. Being Filipino
Categories: None Permalink Comment form It was amazing how quickly they took me in and made me feel welcome. Upon hearing that I'd graduated from Ateneo, no fewer than three Atenistas started chatting with me about our alma mater. Then there were questions about high school, grade school (turns out a number of them had also been associated with St. Scholastica's College), the diabolo I brought... And of course, the brownies were a big hit. What really made me melt, though, was how they repeatedly referred to the Philippines as home. Even those who had moved as far back as 1988 still had very active connections with the Philippines, still thought of retiring (or at least skipping the Canadian winter) in the Philippines to teach. With all of our tsk-tsk-tsking over the political messes the country gets itself into, there was still that underlying pride in our country. And oh, how Filipino we were last night. From discussions of traditional delicacies to musings on the lyrical properties of deep Filipino, it was an evening celebrating our culture. Top it all off with truly horrendous puns (like the name of an actual salon: Scissors Palace), another Filipino specialty, and you've got a night to remember.
