Hip-hop is a gritty, visceral, artistic manifestation of the realities of inner-city life, while Maui is kind of a fantasy world utopia. To me hip-hop feels like nighttime music or the soundtrack to a fast-paced urban lifestyle, but here it is always sunny and mellow. I love hip-hop, but I just haven’t listened to it as much as I did on the mainland. As I look more deeply, I get a sense of hip-hop’s universal appeal and its poetic form that transcends language, culture and environment. The essence of hip-hop is rarely conveyed in Top 40 radio, but the true hip-hop icons can creatively communicate its spiritual essence. According to KRS One’s Temple of Hip-Hop, “Hip-hop cannot be (and should not be) interpreted or described in words. It is a feeling. An awareness. A state of mind.” Lorenzo “Rennie” Harris conveys this awareness through dance. He has been living hip-hop and dancing since the late 1970s as he grew up in North Philadelphia. In 1992 Harris founded Rennie Harris Puremovement, a hip-hop dance company dedicated to preserving and disseminating hip-hop culture through workshops, classes, hip-hop history lecture demonstrations, long-term residencies, mentoring programs and public performances.

Sometimes half the work in dealing with a new language is finding out what it is, and relating it to the sometimes wildly varying classifications from Ruhlen , Voegelin, and the Ethnologue. There are notes relating to this, as well as information on dialects , and names of languages I don't have yet. M.R.
