Welcome to Tina Wasserman's Cooking and More...
Dear Friends, The High Holy Days are relatively late this year which gives all of us a little more time between the beginning of the school season and the planning and preparation for the Holidays.  This year many of us have been pre-occupied with the lives of our fellow Americans devastated by Hurricane Katrina.  Here, in Dallas, we are exposed directly to the emotional and financial toll it has taken on many.  For me, it has been heart-wrenching as well as heart-warming to be able to give a hug to an evacuee, listen to their stories that they repeat hoping that one recounting might make sense to them,  or help them search through the vast piles of food and clothing generously donated by Dallas citizens of all backgrounds.  The rapid response of Dallasites opened many questions about the slow response at the beginning of this tragedy in New Orleans.  But the true meaning of Tikkun Olam –repairing the world- has been exercised here as well as all regions of our country making me very proud to be a Jewish- American. During the holidays when we are surrounded by those we love, let us thank God for all our blessings and pray that this year more people will be written in the book life and spared from tragedy here and abroad.

Holiday Favorites
There are lots of holidays, and lots of traditions that we develop with our families. But none, I think, so important as the Christmas holidays. Our Christmas memories are surely some of the strongest and most special memories we have. I remember Mom and the other women in the family, in the kitchen, preparing the traditional turkey and all the requisite accompaniments. And of course Dad carving the turkey. I remember the Christmas crackers and the silly hats that came out of them that we would then wear through dinner. (Yes we did this last year at my brother Bob's house too! His wife Norma made the crackers, and the silly hats that we wore through dinner.) As our families grow and change, we add new traditions to our old favorites, to create our own unique experience.

(CNN) For those battling the bulge, the holidays can undo many long-term accomplishments in a short amount of time. But there are steps you can take to enjoy your holiday favorites, but still keep the fat content down. Creating recipes that are healthy but still appetizing and familiar is the aim of Bonnie Moore, executive chef at FoodFit.com, a Web site devoted to healthy eating. She says her focus at the holiday season is helping people create traditional-type dishes that won't put on the pounds like the typical mashed potatoes and vegetable dips.
