Women take the ice More women are joining organized ice hockey teams by Heather Bowes Fifteen-year-old Emily May of Pottstown, Penn., lives immersed in hockey. Her first word was "hockey," and in the ninth grade, she had a chance to try her hand at the game.
"I didn't start until then because women's hockey was not available to me prior to that stage in my life," May said.
Like May, more females are jumping at the chance to play a sport once reserved for men. In the 1990-91 season 5,573 female hockey players registered with the USA Hockey Organization. That number has now increased four-fold to 27,000 females. As a result of this boom, more colleges are making women's ice hockey a varsity sport.
Harvard University women's ice hockey coach Katey Stone has experienced firsthand the growth in women's hockey.
Tagging along with her two older brothers, Stone began her hockey career at age 3. She didn't play on an all-girls team until she went to high school in 1981. At the Taft School in Watertown, Conn., Stone's hockey team competed against only 10 other teams.
After high school, Stone joined the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team. When she entered college, 15 teams in the National Collegiate Athletic Association existed, spread over three divisions.

After leading the Chargers in scoring with 15 goals as a sophomore, Karlis Zirnis was named Pre-Season Co-Player of the Year for College Hockey America on Wednesday, landing the Latvian a place on the Pre-Season All-CHA Team. Joining Zirnis on the preseason squad was fellow junior Tyler Butler, who led all returning Charger defensemen in scoring last season with 13 points. Senior Brian Gornick of Air Force shared the Player of the Year with Zirnis. Along with selecting the preseason squad, the CHA coaches also cast their predictions on how the teams would end up at the end of the season. Defending CHA tournament champion Wayne State led the poll with 23 points and four first place-votes, while the defending regular season champion Chargers slid into the runner-up slot with 21 points and two first-place votes. The Purple Eagles of Niagara were predicted to finish third, followed by Bemidji State, Findlay and Air Force in order.

PACK, AHL FLUSH WITH SKILLED TALENT

September 20, 2004 - As we all get pumped up for the start of another Wolf Pack season, it's exciting to think about what the level of play is going to be like in the AHL this year.
Those in Hartford saw some absolute top-shelf prospects play last year, and if anything, it's looking like the talent pool might be even bigger this year. Players like Jozef Balej, Fedor Tyutin and Jed Ortmeyer, who seemed at the end of last year to be on the verge of permanently leaving the AHL behind, most likely will be back in Wolf Pack uniforms.
And the Rangers organization has signed several individuals out of its bountiful crop of recent acquisitions and draftees. Dwight Helminen, Lee Falardeau, Thomas Pöck, David Liffiton, Maxim Kondratiev, Jake Taylor and Ryan Hollweg are just a few additions to the Wolf pack Camp roster this season.

Dryden Inducted into CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Legendary Cornell and Montreal Canadiens goalie Ken Dryden '69 was inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Hall of Fame on Wednesday, July 6, at the Downtown Marriott in Philadelphia. The master of ceremonies for the event, which capped CoSIDA's annual four-day workshop, was long-time broadcaster Dick Enberg. Dryden, who graduated from Cornell in 1969 with a 3.3 grade point average in history, was joined in the Class of 2005 by four other former standouts from across the nation and NCAA athletic divisions. Founded in 1988, the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame now includes 88 members, among them five from the Ivy League. Cornell leads the Ivy League with three of its former student-athletes in the Hall. Joseph Holland '91 and Ellen Mayer-Sabik '97 have also been so honored. Mayer-Sabik was one of approximately 10 members of the hall of fame in attendance to welcome the new inductees, whom Enberg said are "the crème de la crème of our student-athletes." In his acceptance remarks to a crowd of several hundred people, Dryden spoke of the balance between athletics and academics his parents stressed to him and his four siblings. "Our parents wanted us to be well-rounded," he said. "If there was a conflict or if a choice had to be made, school always won."
