Ask each student to read a different country history. Pose a question like "What caused empires and countries to fall?". Ask students to find examples in their history. Then, poll the class to compare situations from many countries. Additional questions that work well are:
"What actions have leaders taken to increase their power?",
"What caused governments to start?", and
"How have governments raised money to pay their expenses?". Create a timeline poster. The CD-ROM version prints a 52 map timeline nearly 50 feet long. Short narratives explain key events. Assign each student one of the 50-year periods and ask them to add details or photographs. Alternatively, develop specialized timelines such as the "History of Science and Technology" or "Art History". Use the map timeline as a background. Ask students to add photographs and notes at appropriate times and places.

    World History:
    The Versus Habit
Beginning with the question Who is the historian?, The Versus Habit challenges students to use advanced media literacy skills to synthesize primary sources, media coverage, fiction, and nonfiction to build their own interpretations of world historical events. Investigating common themes from around the world, students come up against many of the paradoxes that continue to hinder world efforts at peace while encouraging both violence and development. Because students probe a variety of perspectives, they must confront their own biases to form educated, defensible positions. Rhetoric, in its truest sense, becomes a tool of the historian-students as they build their cognitive caches. Included in lesson packages:

This lesson encourages students to learn about the impact of New World crops and Western technology on Asia, specifically China and Japan. Students will collaborate to research the history and implications of trade and write about and present their findings. This lesson is one in a series developed in collaboration with The Asia Society , with support from the Freeman Foundation, highlighting the geography and culture of Asia and its people. COOL TEACHING LESSONS AND UNITS ALONG WITH RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS Short Cuts: WEBQUEST UNITS RESEARCH MODULES ONLINE PROJECTS READY MADE UNITS ... STUDENT RESOURCES Some personal notes about this web page: It is designed as a resource for teachers K-12 who wish to find quality ready-made units and lessons for all subjects, or who wish to develop their own units. This page emphasizes engaged learning models such as WebQuests, Research Modules and Project-Based Learning, but links include other forms of lessons and tutorials. Included also are sites to help you build your own units as well as some examples of sources to help students do research.
Some of these units depend on the ability of students to do interactive work with others using technology. However, even if you have one or no computer in your classroom, most of the units linked at this site can be of much help. They are great learning experiences not only because of technology, but because they also involve students in activities that challenge them to solve problems by doing quality research, analyzing information, synthesizing possibilities, making judgments and then creating interesting products in order to communicate their results. Technology can be used as tools in making these exciting learning experiences even deeper, richer and more motivating.
There is no glitz in this page - just links to wonderful ways for your students to learn. Enjoy!
