Mathematics at the University of Vermont
The First Century
by Roger Cooke Introduction The majority of studies in the history of mathematics concentrate on the grand results of mathematical research. Of the minority that study the pedagogy of the subject the larger part are occupied with the prominent institutions; the majority of the educated American populace, however, learned what it knows of science in state universities. For that reason, it may be of interest to trace the history of mathematics at a small public university, such as the University of Vermont (UVM). Overview of the Subject. Before going into the details of the mathematical development of UVM, it may be well to expend a few words on the perspective within which this mathematics is to be judged. We might consider UVM in the context of its educational mission in Vermont and Northern New England, or as an example of an American University, or in the context of world mathematics. Each of these perspectives provides a special kind of insight into the mathematical activity at UVM. Taking the local point of view, one is pleasantly surprised to find some rather well-educated mathematicians at UVM, even in the early nineteenth century, teaching mathematics in some depth to ordinary citizens aspiring to careers as lawyers, physicians, clergy, or farmers. As we shall see, some of them even conducted a modest level of independent research.

THE HISTORY OF MATHEMATICIANS AND PHYSICISTS by Carmen Pareo Kandi Rachmadi Widdiharto Introduction ... Conclusion
INTRODUCTION
Most people may not like the idea of studying mathematics and physics, because they feel that it is boring and hard to understand. They do not see how these subjects are related to their lives. Actually, people do not realize how often they use mathematics and physics everyday without even thinking about it. One way that these subjects may become more interesting is learning more about people who have helped to develop the equations and formulas that are used. When science was first being studied, the relationship between mathematics and physics was very close. It was impossible to separate these two subjects. Even today it is important to support scientific development. Students should understand the connection between mathematics and physics. In order to understand these subjects students must know about the people who made contributions to them.
THE TASK
You are members of a group of researchers who are studying the history of contributions to BOTH mathematics and physics. Each group will consist of five students. Each student in the group should research two different people from this list. After researching the people in the list go back to your group to discuss your findings. Then, choose five of them and describe the specific contribution that each person made to both mathematics and physics. Finally, you will be making a presentation to your classmates on your findings.

A Modern History of Blacks in Mathematics On this web page we consider a contemporary history of Blacks in Mathematics , not Who are the greatest Black Mathematicians? (for that click the question). Here you can learn about (and even before ) the first African Americans in the Mathematical Sciences , (for the First African American Women click) The First Africans , and Other Important Events in the past 300 years . For earlier periods in history see the web pages of Mathematics in Ancient Africa . For a history of African Americans in science read Kenneth Manning's article Can History Predict the Future? Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806) is often recognized as the first African American mathematician; however, ex-slave Thomas Fuller 's (1710-1790) and the Nigerian Muhammad ibn Muhammad 's (16-1741) activities predate Benjamin Banneker. None of these men had formal degrees. Charles Reason (1814-1893) was probably the first African American to receive a faculty position in mathematics at a predominantly white institution - Central College in Cortland County, New York. Yale University becomes the first United States of America institution to award a Ph.D. in mathematics.

    Mathematics of Cartography
    History of Mapmaking
Evidence of mapmaking suggests that the map evolved independently in many separate parts of earth. Marshall Islanders made stick charts for navigation. Pre-Columbian maps in Mexico used footprints to represent roads. Early Eskimos carved ivory coastal maps. Incas built relief maps of stone and clay. Chinese literature contains references to maps as early as 7th century B.C. 1000 B.C.
Earliest direct evidence of mapping comes from the middle east. These ancient Babylonian clay tablets depict the earth as a flat circular disk. Ancient Chinese Maps
In ancient times, Chinese cartography was more advanced than their contemporaries'. Their maps were accurate and detailed compared to other ancient maps. 200 B.C.

    History of Geometry
    Egyptians c. 2000 - 500 B.C.
Ancient Egyptians demonstrated a practical knowledge of geometry through surveying and construction projects. The Nile River overflowed its banks every year, and the river banks would have to be re-surveyed. See a PBS Nova unit on those big pointy buildings. In the Rhind Papyrus, pi is approximated. Babylonians c. 2000 - 500 B.C.
Ancient clay tablets reveal that the Babylonians knew the Pythagorean relationships. One clay tablet reads 4 is the length and 5 the diagonal. What is the breadth? Its size is not known. 4 times 4 is 16. 5 times 5 is 25. You take 16 from 25 and there remains 9. What times what shall I take in order to get 9? 3 times 3 is 9. 3 is the breadth. Greeks c. 750-250 B.C.
Ancient Greeks practiced centuries of experimental geometry like Egypt and Babylonia had, and they absorbed the experimental geometry of both of those cultures. Then they created the first formal mathematics of any kind by organizing geometry with rules of logic. Euclid's (400BC) important geometry book The Elements formed the basis for most of the geometry studied in schools ever since.

    Using History to Teach Mathematics:
    An International Perspective
    edited by Victor Katz
    Reviewed by Ed Sandifer
Don't be turned off by the title. Victor Katz has gathered a diverse and fascinating selection of 26 essays on the history of mathematics and on ways to use it to teach mathematics, just like it says in the title. The title, though, does not capture the enthusiasm of the various authors, the depth and breadth of their topics, or their conviction that understanding and using history can enrich and improve the ways we teach mathematics. Katz has divided the essays into five groups, proceeding from the more pedagogical in Part I to the more historical in Part 5. The first four parts consist of three to five essays each, and the fifth part consists of eleven. The three essays in "Part I: General Ideas on the Use of History in Teaching" lay a foundation and motivation for the incorporation of history. Siu Man-Keung opens the work with some ways to include history without sacrificing mathematical content. Frank Swetz follows with an account of mathematical education from Mesopotamia through China to the Italian Renaissance. Wann-Sheng Horng contributes "Euclid versus Liu Hui: A Pedagogical Reflection" to "Part II: Historical Ideas and their Relationship to Pedagogy." He gives a provocative comparison between the structural approach to mathematics that the Greeks used to the more operational approach of the Chinese, with special emphasis on Euclid's and Liu Hui's descriptions of the so-called Euclidean algorithm.

  • Jared Mansfield
A graduate of Yale, he came to Ohio as Surveyor General in 1803, the year that Ohio became a state. Starting with a principal meridian that marked the boundary of Ohio and Indiana, he set up coordinates for a system of townships and sections that would eventually spread across the nation. He later served as Professor of Natural Philosophy at the US Military Academy at West Point from 1814 to 1828.
  • Thomas J. Matthews
Professor of Mathematics at Miami University from 1845-1852. Earlier he taught at Transylvania University in Kentucky and Woodward High School in Cincinnati. He was the first president of the Western Literary Institute and College of Professional Teachers, and he is known for his work in surveying the "Matthews Line" between Kentucky and Tennessee and for other civil engineering projects.
  • Joseph Ray
Professor of mathematics at Woodward College in Cincinnati and later principal of Woodward High School. He also served a term as President of the Ohio State Teachers Association. Ray is best known as the author of one of the most popular series of American arithmetic and algebra textbooks of the nineteenth century.
