Fred Rickey's History of Mathematics Page There are two groups in the US which meet regularly and read original sources. ORESME meets in the Cincinnatti area and ARITHMOS meets at Western Connecticut State Universtity. Full details are available on their web sites. Here is some additional information: Both groups have read some of the works of Georg Cantor (here are some works by and about him ). ARITHMOS has discussed John Wallis and also had a meeting about Twentieth Century Logic where they read papers by Church Turing Post's critique ), and Post . Of necessity, these groups are small, but if you have a serious interest in history you ought to think of starting your own. The February 2005 meeting deals with Euler's Introductio . I have written a A Reader's Guide to Euler's Introductio . Here is a list of errata in Blanton's translation of Euler's Introductio. Dominic Klyve and Lee Stemkoski, graduate students at Dartmouth, have a page listing all of Euler's publications , and copies of some of them. Links to History of Mathematics on the web.

    An Annotated Bibliography
This bibliography is intended to call to your attention some of the more interesting papers that discuss teaching of history of mathematics courses. It is now in a very preliminary stage, so comments and suggested additions are welcome. Currently a few papers are included that might better be described as dealing with "using history in the classroom." As this bibliography grows, these will be separated off into another web page. Albree, Joe, "An alternative to the conventional wisdom of a term paper in history of mathematics survey courses," pp. 175-182 in In Eves' Circles, MAA Notes #24, 1994, edited by Joby Milo Anthony. This excellent paper begins with an enumeration and discussion of the main weaknesses of term papers: inappropriate topics, mathematical content, variability in the use of sources, cut and paste work, and writing mechanics. After redefining the goal to making students aware of the rich historical literature available, Albree designed a sequence of five "literature reports" which lead the student from textbooks, to journal articles, to original sources. These literature reports avoid or solve the problems with term papers. Anglin, W. S., "Mathematics and History,"

Two introductory segments give an overview of the program. The first outlines some of the important developments in the period from 3000 B.C. to 300 B.C., which culminated with the publication of Euclid's Elements . The second gives an outline of some of the landmark achievements from 300 B.C. up to the events that led to the development of calculus. The remaining segments describe in more detail some of the important highlights on the road to calculus. They discuss number systems developed in different cultures; numerology or number mysticism as practiced by the Pythagoreans; the origin of number theory as an outgrowth of numerology; the Pythagorean Theorem for right triangles and how it led to the discovery of irrational numbers; the golden age of Hellenistic mathematics as it flourished in the ancient city of Alexandria; the multi-cultural search for an understanding of the number pi and the landmark contributions to this effort by Archimedes; how astronomy gave birth to trigonometry; and other developments such as algebra and analytic geometry that eventually led to the calculus. The program also includes some mathematical derivations in animated form: proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem, an new geometric proof of the irrationality of the square root ot two, two methods for calculating the area of a circular disk, and the Archimedes method for estimating pi.

    Introduction
Formal studies in the history of mathematics developed much more slowly than studies in mathematics itself. There is a particular difficulty in that those who are well trained in historical analysis are typically insufficiently versed in mathematics to be able to appreciate the subject at hand. This has left mathematicians to write their history, by and large, although they are usually untrained for that task. Nonetheless, the stories of the people involved in developing mathematics are often inspiring or informative. A sense of what motivated mathematicians to pursue their key ideas helps put the importance of those results into a better context. Thus the study of the history of mathematics and its proponents includes several well-developed parts. The development of comparatively simple mathematics (through the calculus, for example) is now well documented, principally as part of the study of the development of scientific ideas in distinct human cultures through the 18th century. The development of mathematics in the last couple of centuries is instead more frequently studied thematically that is, the worldwide development of algebra, or statistics, say or through the lives of individual mathematicians. No attempt will be made to summarize the development of abstract and applied mathematics during this last few centuries; see the resources below. Some historical comments are included in the index pages for the separate disciplines.
