Keeping Track of the Time Mode
This document defines the Zebra time modes, and trains the user to identify what time mode Zebra is using and what time the displayed data were taken.
Time Modes
As discussed in General Setup , there are two time modes in Zebra
  • Real-time mode: Displays the most recent data in each enabled directory. In real-time mode, the reference time is set to the time that the most recent data file was obtained.
  • History mode: Displays the most recent data from each enabled directory before a specified reference time . In history mode, the reference time is a constant that is arbitrarily set by the user.
The reference date and time is displayed in the upper left-hand corner of the main windows. There are two ways to find out whether Zebra is in real-time mode or history mode.
  • If the font color of the reference time is yellow, then Zebra is in history mode.
  • The current time mode is displayed at the top of the "Data Available" menu (for information on the "Data Available" menu, see General Setup In order to change the time mode or the reference time, activate the time widget. This is done by selecting "Time Widget" from the "Zeb Conrol Options" menu (see General Setup ). Within a few seconds, an outline of the widget shows up on the screen. Simply move the outline to the desired position, then click with the left mouse button to draw the window.

Ted Metzger I keep a photograph of T.E. Lawrence on my desk. It’s a small, black and white picture that I ripped out of The New York Times Magazine. Lawrence is standing behind King Faisal and between a number of men that history has forgotten. Without the caption, I would never have noticed him standing there. Lawrence makes any mundane task more exciting. As I sit and procrastinate, he tells me about his archaeological digs and the siege of Aqaba. Every description is colored with the romanticism of David Lean’s photography and Marice Jarre’s score. The guy who barely stands out in a picture with four plain, short men created a mythology surrounding his name that was worthy of a Hollywood epic. If he had never written Seven Pillars of Wisdom, perhaps he would be the fifth forgotten man in an old picture. Before Lawrence, I spoke to an Orson Welles picture. He had wonderful anecdotes about his collaboration with Herman Mankiewicz and John Houseman on Citizen Kane. It was not the old and fat Orson Welles who yammered on to Peter Bogdanovich. It was the young and fiery Welles who directed avant-garde stage productions of “Macbeth.” The picture I have shows Welles exiting a cab on the way to a premiere of Citizen Kane. That was when RKO had high hopes for him. The Citizen Kane marquee dominates the background. The 26-year-old Welles in the picture is the one I remember.

    William H. McNeill
In his imaginative and provocative book...William H. McNeill develops an unconventional notion that, he observes, is 'simplicity itself.' He maintains that people who move together to the same beat tend to bond and thus that communal dance and drill alter human feelings.
John Mueller, New York Times Book Review Every now and then, a slender, graceful, unassuming little volume modestly proposes a radical rethinking of human history. Such a book is Keeping Together in Time ...Important, witty, and thoroughly approachable, [it] could, perhaps, only be written by a scholar in retirement with a lifetime's interdisciplinary reading to ponder, the imagination to conceive unanswerable questions, and the courage, in this age of over-speculation, to speculate in areas where certainty is impossible. Its vision of dance as a shaper of evolution, a perpetually sustainable and sustaining resource, would crown anyone's career.

    Keeping up with the cones
Natural History ; New York; Feb 2002; by Aparna Sreenivasan; Volume: 111 Issue: 1 Start Page: 40-47 ISSN: 00280712 Subject Terms: Mollusks Poisons Evolution Peptides Abstract: The genus Conus includes more than 500 species, whose shells are embellished with a seemingly endless variety of intricate patterns. Cone snails have existed for 55 millions years, and the number of species of the venomous snail has been doubling every 6.1 million years. Full Text: [Headnote] Chased by evolutionary biologists and pharmacological researchers, a tropical mollusk redefines "a snail's pace." In the early 1900s a U.S. marine stationed in the Philippines found a beautiful shell near a coral reef. Thinking it would make a nice gift for his girlfriend back home, he carried it off, placing it on his shoulder to show his friends. As the young man walked toward his buddies, the animal inside the shell extended a needle like organ and stung him on the neck. Within minutes, the marine was dead. The unfortunate American died from the sting of a cone snail, a member of the genus Conus. Collectors and beachcombers have long admired and coveted the snails' beautiful shells, risking a sometimes fatal sting to get them. The genus includes more than 500 species, whose shells are embellished with a seemingly endless variety of intricate patterns: repeating triangles or tiny cobblestone motifs, stripes, bands, spots. The length of the protoconch (the spiral on the wide posterior end of the shell) and the number of whorls differ by species, and the shells range from the size of a grape to that of a pear. To a collector, the allure of a mature, undamaged specimen-called a gem shell, and nearly impossible to find-cannot be underestimated. Despite the risk, people still pick them up.

N ot until somewhat recently (that is, in terms of human history) did people find a need for knowing the time of day. As best we know, 5000 to 6000 years ago great civilizations in the Middle East and North Africa began to make clocks to augment their calendars. With their attendant bureaucracies, formal religions, and other burgeoning societal activities, these cultures apparently found a need to organize their time more efficiently.
    Sun Clocks
T he Sumerian culture was lost without passing on its knowledge, but the Egyptians were apparently the next to formally divide their day into parts something like our hours. Obelisks (slender, tapering, four-sided monuments) were built as early as 3500 BCE. Their moving shadows formed a kind of sundial, enabling people to partition the day into morning and afternoon. Obelisks also showed the year's longest and shortest days when the shadow at noon was the shortest or longest of the year. Later, additional markers around the base of the monument would indicate further subdivisions of time. Another Egyptian shadow clock or sundial, possibly the first portable timepiece, came into use around 1500 BCE. This device divided a sunlit day into 10 parts plus two "twilight hours" in the morning and evening. When the long stem with 5 variably spaced marks was oriented east and west in the morning, an elevated crossbar on the east end cast a moving shadow over the marks. At noon, the device was turned in the opposite direction to measure the afternoon "hours."

    http://www.maa.mhn.de/Scholar/times.html
    Astronomical Time Keeping
Introduction: Time keeping and construction of calendars are among the oldest branches of astronomy. Up until very recently, no earth-bound method of time keeping could match the accuracy of time determinations derived from observations of the sun and the planets. All the time units that appear natural to man are caused by astronomical phenomena: The year by Earth's orbit around the Sun and the resulting run of the seasons, the month by the Moon's movement around the Earth and the change of the Moon phases, the day by Earth's rotation and the succession of brightness and darkness.
If high precision is required, however, the definition of time units appears to be problematic. Firstly, ambiguities arise for instance in the exact definition of a rotation or revolution. Secondly, some of the basic astronomical processes turn out to be uneven and irregular. A problem known for thousands of years is the non-commensurability of year, month, and day. Neither can the year be precisely expressed as an integer number of months or days, nor does a month contain an integer number of days. To solves these problems, a multitude of time scales and calenders were devised of which the most important will be described below. Siderial Time The siderial time is deduced from the revolution of the Earth with respect to the distant stars and can therefore be determined from nightly observations of the starry sky. A siderial day can be defined in a first approximation as the time interval between two successive passages of the same star through the meridian. Here, the meridian of an observational site is the great circle passing through the two celestial poles and the zenith of the site. Expressed in different words, the meridian is the projection of the circle of the site's geographical longitude onto the celestial sphere if projected from the Earth's centre. The passage through the meridian is thus a more accurate determination of the point in time when in colloquial speech ``the star is due south'' (at least for observers on the northern hemisphere). The duration of a siderial day in units of Universal Time is 23h 56m 04.0905s.

    KEEPING THE FAITH
    Sister Kathleen Crowley
Ordinary Time: Cycles in Marriage, Faith and Renewal
    Nancy Mairs
    Beacon Press
The ability to share one's life of faith with candor and insight is a risk undertaken by few. For such sharing can easily be interpreted wrongly and received with less respect than is its due. Yet, with piercing honesty and penetrating wisdom, Nancy Mairs has done this, placing her life and her belief before her readers in a series of personal essays which form her autobiography of faith, Ordinary Time . In this spiritual diary, she exhibits a depth of understanding of her newly-owned Catholic faith. At the beginning of her book, Mairs makes clear the urgency she feels to know why and how she has spent most of her conscious life "in an uneasy and unrelenting state of religious faith." The author relates her growing response to a "Something Else", the presence of God Herself. Mairs examines the immanence of "God working out Godself in everything." The title of her book identifies that time in the liturgical life of the Church which is outside the seasons of feast and fast outside of Advent and Christmas, Lent and Easter. Ordinary Time becomes for Mairs the time of religious presence, of God's close proximity to her in the people and events of her life. The transcendent God of mystery seems far from her experiences of God who is involved in every moment of her life. Mairs struggles with her "uneasy faith" in being, at one and the same time, Catholic and feminist something she laughingly refers to as an oxymoron. Yet, throughout her book, she attempts to weave together these two realities. Sometimes she accomplishes this with insight and integrity. At other times, she wrestles with the uncomfortable fit of both in her life. At this intersection of Catholicism and feminism, Mairs exhibits most visibly her ability to live with ambiguity and uncertainty. For she chooses to remain within this Church which she loves and wishes to change.
