Dorothy Halmos (d. 1998) was Librarian of the Hancock Library of Biology and Oceanography from the mid 1940s through the 1970s. Her mark on USC is evidenced in the following article, which appeared from 1967 to 1969, in the Coranto: journal of the Friends of the Libraries. It recounts the development of the library of the Boston Society of Natural History, which is the foundation of the Hancock Natural History Collection. The University of Southern California is fortunate to posses, as the basis of its Hancock Library of Biology and Oceanography , one of the outstanding natural history libraries in this country. It was purchased by Captain G. Allan Hancock for the Allan Hancock Foundation, the foreign serials and journals in 1944 and the books and domestic serials and journals in 1946, when the library was already over a hundred years old. To appreciate the collection fully, it is important to know something of its history and how and by whom it was built up over the years. This young collection holds a remarkable number of the items mentioned in the bibliography, including some of the scarcest books. Sharlane Grant, head of preservation, thinks that strong art and anthropology programs at the university support the holdings. To date there has not been an active weeding program. The Library has a brittle book policy but no money for active microfilming. Access: In person, phone and mail. Electronically, type TELNET ACCS.INRE.EDU; at the destination prompt, enter library; then enter 5 for VT100. To exit, hit the TELNET escape key. Lending Policy: ILL participant. OCLC designation AZS. Rare Books do not circulate. Preservation: The Preservation Department is involved in identifying the priorities of the university for future, long-term planning. Grant believes it is the role of the preservationist to be the conscience of today and the advocate of tomorrow.

What is the Association of Independent Libraries?
The Association of Independent Libraries was founded in 1989 to further the conservation restoration and public awareness of a too little known but significant section of our cultural heritage. Equally important remains its aim to develop links between its constituent members by means of co-operative agreements, newsletters, social gatherings and meetings. The founding members of the Association were all institutions that began life specifically as independently funded subscription libraries. They were founded between 1768 and 1841 in a period when there were no rate-supported libraries and no university libraries outside Cambridge, Dublin, Edinburgh and Oxford. However, more and more people were reading and books were very expensive to buy, so groups of individuals combined together to form libraries which could be both of everyday use and of increasing value in the future. Many of the Association's members also provided other facilities for their members including museums, adult education and dining facilities. Several continue to do so.

Maybe That's Why They Call It 'Letter Size'
Here's a great booksale promotion idea from the Mission Viejo Library . The Letters are desktop published and printed on 8.5" x 11" astrobright paper. In the pictured example the paper letters were plastic laminated and then fixed to the plain back side of an existing plastic banner using foam tape. The banner was then draped over a stone wall in front of the library. Valerie Meyer, Mission Viejo City Librarian, reports that they plan to add "TODAY" to the banner for the next booksale. This is an easy and eye-catching way to produce colorful signage and there are surely many ways to expand on this theme. Just in case your desktop publishing facilities are tied up, we offer a
