FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! While almost every genealogist would love the chance to visit the famous Mormon Family History Library in Salt Lake City, it's not always a possibility. For those of you in Sydney, Australia it is a mere 8000 miles (12,890 km) after all! The good news, however, is that traveling halfway around the world is not necessary for using the millions of microfilm rolls, books and other genealogical resources of this amazing library thanks to Family History Centers. A vast network of over 3,400 branch libraries, known as Family History Centers ("FHCs" for short), are open under the umbrella of the Family History Library. These Family History Centers operate in 64 countries, with more than 100,000 rolls of microfilm circulated to the centers each month. These records include vital, census, land, probate, immigration, and church records, as well as many other records of genealogical value. Located in almost all major cities, and many smaller communities, it is very possible that a Family History Center is located in easy driving distance of your home.

Beginner's Guide to Family History Research - Chapter 4
Using Libraries and Archives
Primary and Secondary Sources
Now that you've set up a record keeping system and assessed your home and family sources, it's time to explore libraries and archives. Libraries are where you will look first for published records and manuscript collections. Archives are where retired official records of public or private agencies are kept. In some cases archival facilities may contain many of the same types of materials as libraries. Both have two broad categories of records available to youprimary and secondary records, or original and compiled sources. Primary records are those created at or about the time an event occurred. They are often referred to as original records. When conflicting information arises in your research, primary sources are more apt to be correct than secondary records. Secondary records, sometimes called compiled sources, were created at a later time than the event. For example, marriage records entered in the appropriate volume of county records by ministers and justices of the peace shortly after the marriages were performed are primary records. An index to those records created many years later is a secondary source. Secondary sources can be very helpful in locating primary records, but remember to always attempt to locate and use the primary records. Remember too, that because a record is not listed in an index does not mean that record is not among the original records. Records vary widely in their accuracy. A death certificate, for example, is probably an accurate source for the date and cause of death because the record was made about the time the event occurred. However, it may be very inaccurate regarding the deceased's parents' names and the deceased's place of birth because these events occurred long before this record was made.

    • In most libraries genealogy reference materials are part of local history or special collections. And most often those materials are kept on the premises so that only people who physically visit the library can use them. Many libraries offer research help and photocopy services to help people access their genealogy materials from a distance. In some instances, genealogists are lucky to have access to these types of collections through interlibrary loan (ILL), rental or membership lending services. The links on this page are designed to highlight facilities that will give genealogists borrowing privileges in order to reap the benefits of these collections from afar.

Knowing about our past is an essential prerequisite to understanding the present, and because of Britains role as a world power, the history of other cultures can be better understood against the backdrop of British history. The project will benefit all library users for many years, but there will be a particular emphasis on young people and the elderly. In addition to the special book collections there will be a display featuring a newly created CD-ROM presentation, developed by Bradford?s Heritage Recording Unit. There will be visits to the exhibition for school classes and suggestions for further study for all schools. There will also be a history reading group, using the model of fiction and poetry groups to enhance the experience for readers.

For the past three decades, Special Collections has been building a cartographic history collection focusing on Texas and the Gulf of Mexico. Built largely through the private donations of individuals like Ted and Helen Mayborn, Lewis and Virginia Buttery, William Collins, W. E. Chilton, Jr., Robert Isham, Marvin and Shirley Applewhite, Murray Hudson, Jenkins and Virginia Garrett, and many others, and with the support of the Sid Richardson Foundation of Fort Worth and the Summerlee Foundation of Dallas, the collection now numbers more than 6,500 maps dating from 1493 to the present and 2,200 school and commercial atlases and geographies dating from the 16 th through the 20 th centuries. UTA is committed to not only amassing and preserving a unique resource like this, but also to making it available to a wide audience and developing programs and launching initiatives to ensure that the maps and atlases are accessible and used by researchers across the country.
