... Back to Ancestors LIBRARIES AND ARCHIVES- EPISODE FIVE Sooner or later, you'll want to visit a library or archive to find records that you don't have at home. But a library can often seem overwhelming to the beginning researcher. In this episode, Ancestors hosts Jim and Terry Willard take you on location to the largest genealogical library in the world, the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, where staff and patrons offer their personal tips for a successful research trip. The Family History Library houses 2 million rolls of microfilm and more than 270,000 compiled family histories. Tips
  • Start locally. Become familiar with local libraries, historical and genealogical societies, and family history centers in your area.
  • Use state and national resources only after you have thoroughly explored what is available to you locally. This approach will save you time and money.
  • Use the following four-step research process when you visit a library:
Identify what you already know
  • Decide what you want to learn
  • Choose a record to search for
  • Find and research the record, recording the information on your pedigree chart and research log.

Guide work with libraries (.a files) in g++.
    http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/doc/ug/larger/archives.html
www.delorie.com djgpp doc /ug/larger/archives.html search Guide: Making and Using Libraries A library is a collection of objects, much like your town library is a collection of books. When building your program, you can make one or more libraries available to gcc and it will use the objects in those libraries to help it complete your program. For example, all the standard C functions (like printf and exit ) are in the C library, which is lib/libc.a in a DJGPP installation. When you link your program, gcc adds whatever objects in C library it needs, based on what your program calls. It doesn't link them all in, though, which would be a waste of time and space. To make your own library, you must first compile each of your sources into an object.
      gcc -c hello.c
      gcc -c goodbye.c
Next, you use the ar command to create the library and put the objects in it.
      ar rvs mystuff.a hello.o goodbye.o
Each of the rvs letters means something. r means to replace objects in the library with new ones on the command line. Since the library doesn't contain any objects, this effectively means add them to the library. The next time you run it, it will replace the old version with the new version. There are also options for extracting and deleting objects in the library. The v option means verbose, which tells

The following is a selected list of resources for researching genealogy in the University of Oregon Library System. The University of Oregon collections are strongest in the history of Oregon and the West. You may need to dig deeper and consider borrowing materials from other collections to find information on specific ancestors from other parts of the country or the world. For further assistance contact the Knight Library Reference Desk at (541) 346-1818 or Heather Ward, Humanities Librarian, at hward@uoregon.edu Off-campus access to some of the electronic resources listed on this page is limited to current UO students, faculty, and staff and is indicated by a UO button
    Background Information
Before beginning library research in genealogy, you should fill out a family group record form for each person you are researching. Using such forms helps you record what you already know and identify any gaps in information. These and other forms are available from Family Search.
