    In this unit, students will visit Ellis Island sites to learn about the patterns and history of immigration in this country. These explorations will serve as a personal link for students to the historical importance of immigration in United States history.
  • Lesson One: Introduction to Immigration . Read and discuss selected resources about children and immigration. Children develop an understanding of the concept of immigration and reasons why people immigrate.
  • Lesson Two: Immigration Explorations, Part 1 . Organize students into research groups to visit sites on immigration that were created by other children. These sites will provide models for students to complete their own research.
  • Lesson Three: Internet Research . Using the criteria they developed earlier, students begin to collect and synthesize information on immigration.

    PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
    T his program will explain the Battle of Fredericksburg. Students will visit the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center and view the museum and orientation program. They will also take a short walking tour along the Sunken Road area of the battlefield. Fifth grade and seventh grade have been targeted because of their related curricular objectives. These include identifying major periods and events in the history of the United States, understanding of geography as it relates to the Civil War, and participating effectively in group activities.     THEME
    T he City of Fredericksburg and the surrounding countryside provided the setting for four major battles of the Civil War. The first of these was the Battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862. It was to become Confederate General Robert E. Lee's most one-sided victory of the war. Today, the National Park Service preserves key portions of the battlefield.

Multicultural Lesson Plans 5000 FREE LESSONS PLANS Anti-Defamation League Dear Children's Literature Publisher: A title or titles published by your company are represented in the Anti-Defamation League's newly launched A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE(r) Institute Recommended Multicultural and Anti-Bias Books for Children Grades K-6 , an online bibliography designed for educators, children, parents and other caregivers. This interactive bibliography features more than 400 multicultural titles that been reviewed by ADL's education staff and selected as a recommended book based on a variety of evaluative criteria. Visitors to the site can take advantage of multiple user-friendly search methods, read guidelines for assessing children's literature, and recommend books to be added to the bibliography. Links to order books online are also provided. At their best, multicultural books should offer both a mirror in which children see themselves reflected and a window on the world that will allow children to experience multiple perspectives.
