This guide is designed as a primer to help educators and students prepare to visit the Times Mirror Hall of Native American Cultures located in the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. The guide focuses on meeting the criteria set by the History-Social Science Content Standards for California Public Schools. This guide is not intended as a chronological or all-inclusive history of American Indians but instead will provide an overview of several particular Native peoples represented in the Hall of Native American Cultures. This book of activities is designed to help students in grades 3-8 to develop an appreciation and respect for Africaits diversity, its wealth in people and cultures and its rich history. It was developed in 1993 by the Field Museum of Natural History as a companion guide for their permanent exhibit on Africa. Some activities ask students to observe portions of the exhibit. Others ask students to apply themes from Africa to their own lives by mapping their community, designing their own Royal Palace, or drawing their own memorial tusk.

    • American Memory Collection is a very extensive collection of Americana from the Library of Congress. It includes photographs, manuscripts, rare books, maps, recorded sound, and moving pictures. You can get a taste of the past from viewing the materials.
    Off line
    • Contact the local library about historical books and information. They are usually very good about lending materials to students. They might also know a local history buff that you can invite as a guest speaker.
    • Contact the local newspaper(s) and see if they will provide you with copies of past issues for your research.
