ANSEL ADAMS LESSON PLAN

The Photo Essay
See: Gallery: Trailer Camp Children and Mt Williamson from Manzanar Source: Ansel Adams - An Autobiography The Manzanar Relocation Camp Ansel Adams made several trips from Yosemite to the Manzanar Relocation Camp in the Owens Valley of eastern California to photograph Japanese-Americans who were interred during World War II. "The infamous decision of the government (in the time of fear and hysteria following Pearl Harbor) to transport American citizens of Japanese ancestry to several detention camps resulted in most severe hardship among the Japanese American population of the West Coast." Ansel Adams compares his approach in photographing the situation to that of Dorothea Lange. Dorothea Lange "photographed the misery and bewilderment of the Japanese-Americans", whereas his own photographs "were an attempt to record the accomplishment of the people in rising above their desolate situation." Lange photographed Japanese Americans "as they were taken to the tarpaper shacks in the desert. Her photographs are shocking, moving documents of a terrible time for those people." Her photographs have "priceless photographic value."

Exploring Native Americans Across the Curriculum
Blast stereotypes with across-the-curriculum activities for students of all ages. Stereotypes of Native Americans abound in movies and on TV, in literature and in history books. "Teachers must provide accurate instruction not only about history but also about the contemporary lives of Native Americans," writes Debbie Reese in Teaching Young Children About Native Americans , a 1996 ERIC Digest. Reese is a Pueblo Indian who studies and works in the field of early childhood education. Stereotype is a difficult issue to define in any culture, especially in the Native American culture. As noted in A Line in the Sand , a Web site dedicated to the debate surrounding Native American stereotypes and other issues: "We want to be careful to note that this 'line in the sand' will not lie at the same place for everyone. ...We must recognize that not all Native American communities have had the same historical experience, either before or after 1492. For this reason, the members of these communities will have different opinions. There will be different opinions both between and within communities, just as there are in all human communities."

    Author: Jill Neitz
    Background:
The history of Halloween goes back more than 2,000 years. The earliest celebrations of Halloween were among the Celtic people who lived in the areas which are now Great Britain and Northern France. The Celts were people who worshiped the beauty of nature. They worshiped a Sun God and believed that without him, they would not live. They also worshipped Samhain who was the lord of the dead and of the cold, dark winter season. They believed that on October 31 Samhain would call together all of the dead and these souls would take on the shape of an animal. They believed that all creatures wandered the Earth on that night. This was called the Vigil of Samhain. The Druids, which were the priests of the Celtic people, would build fires on the hilltops in belief that the large fires would help to strengthen the Sun God, and give him power enough to overcome the lord of darkness so that the sun season could continue. They believed that the fires were sacred, therefore they burned dried crops and sacrificed animals to help strengthen the Sun God. At midnight they stop worshipping the Sun God and start to worship Samhain because he will be the ruler for the next six months. This is the starting of the new year. They perform ceremonies through the night to ask the spirits to tell the future of the upcoming year. In the morning each household receives an ember from the fire, this ember is used to start fires in their own homes with the belief that it will ward off evil spirits in the new year.
