COOL TEACHING LESSONS AND UNITS ALONG WITH RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS Short Cuts: WEBQUEST UNITS RESEARCH MODULES ONLINE PROJECTS READY MADE UNITS ... STUDENT RESOURCES Some personal notes about this web page: It is designed as a resource for teachers K-12 who wish to find quality ready-made units and lessons for all subjects, or who wish to develop their own units. This page emphasizes engaged learning models such as WebQuests, Research Modules and Project-Based Learning, but links include other forms of lessons and tutorials. Included also are sites to help you build your own units as well as some examples of sources to help students do research.
Some of these units depend on the ability of students to do interactive work with others using technology. However, even if you have one or no computer in your classroom, most of the units linked at this site can be of much help. They are great learning experiences not only because of technology, but because they also involve students in activities that challenge them to solve problems by doing quality research, analyzing information, synthesizing possibilities, making judgments and then creating interesting products in order to communicate their results. Technology can be used as tools in making these exciting learning experiences even deeper, richer and more motivating.
There is no glitz in this page - just links to wonderful ways for your students to learn. Enjoy!

Each month, we will create new lessons based upon outstanding PBS series and around outstanding Web resources.

In 1883, the young Willa Cather was plucked from her comfortable home in Virginia and dropped into the prairies of Nebraska, a both terrifying and exhilarating experience that became the force behind her extraordinary work. As depicted in the AMERICAN MASTERS show, Cather's novels serve as mirrors into the history and culture of pioneer life in late nineteenth century America. In this unit, students will learn to read literature with an eye toward understanding history and then create their own historical fiction. Immigrant students can also use the opportunity to examine and write about their own pioneering ways as they learn about new customs in a completely foreign culture.

Materials For this lesson, you will need: Access to additional reference materials about Chief Joseph Procedures Tell students that you are going to devote a class period to reading the piece of Native American literature included below and analyzing it in a class discussion. Begin by explaining that the piece you will read is from the 19th century but that, unlike so much Native American literature that began orally and later was written down, this piece originated as a written document. Go on to say that the piece was published in a magazine for a white audience in 1879, two years after the writer had surrendered to the U.S. government; that the piece was written by the Nez Perce leader Chief Joseph, whose father had been converted to Christianity by a missionary; and that the son was educated in a mission school.
